My local ffl has an interarms whitworth 375 h&h for sale. Someone has cut the barrel down to a hair over 20 inches and magnaported it. Oh also the metal has been teflon coated. The problem i have is how to gauge the value of this rifle. Obviously blue book value is not going to give me anything accurate. Any ideas on the aproximate value here? oh by the way the rifle is in about 85-90% condition. Depends on whether you want a ported 20" 375H&H or not. If so, maybe $550-600. If looking for the action/stock- $450.
my problem seems to be that i can't afford a new cz or ruger and i can't build a 375 on a mauser action for the price he has this whitorth listed. i guess i'll just see if i can get the good guy discount

dam porting is enough to drop the price, teflon finish? don't like it in my frying pans let alone a rifle. might want to take a camera and head over to his store and snap a shot or two and post er up.....
Don�t worry over the barrel length. I�ve got a Sako carbine in .375 H&H with a 20 inch barrel and there are plenty of recipes out there that will serve you well.
I wouldn't give more than $400 for it unless you want a 20" barrel. You can get a new CZ 550 in 375 H&H for around $700.
If you purchased the rifle for $400 dollars you still need to put a barrel on the action. $200 to $260 and you will have a rifle. Plus the cost of installing barrel. So around $700 dollars in a used .375H&H rifle.

I was actually looking at this thing because it was short and handy. The price seemed a bit steep to me though. The teflon finish holds up pretty well here in alaska and the 20 inch barrel helps in carying through the brush we have up here (20 feet is about all you have for visability alot of the time). Honestly the only thing that is seriosly stopping me from working something out with the shop is the fact that it doesn't have iron sights on it anymore. Install would be a gunsmith only job becuase of the porting and there is no gunsmith in town (i'm not going to ship a used rifle down south and spend 3 or 4 hundred dollers on getting sight put on).
I'd have the barrel shortened to remove the ports.
i was able to work out a deal with the owner and i'm gonna pick it up tonight. just what i need! another project. i got a good deal though so i couldn't really pass on it.
This of course is my opinion only. I do have and enjoy the Whitworth Rifle.
You don't mention the type stock it has.
Are there sights? Express or otherwise it makes a difference
Is it a real whitworth or a Mark X?
If you want to maintain it as a .375 the action only value is around $300.
If it has sights they can be removed and put onto a new .375 barrel. Gunsmith cost of around $250
If you have wood stock and want to put a Fiberglass on it you can sell the wood for the price of a good synthetic. If the reverse is true and you are looking to go to wood, add anywhere from $500 to the moon depending on what you want.
You can buy a good looking Whitworth Express rifle for $900 and an English Import with correct proofs for $1000 to $1500 if you are lucky and willing to really look.
Personally I would not worry about the 20 inch barrel but the porting would kill the deal unless there is enough barrel to cut and re-crown and add a banded front sight.

If you don't like the porting you could cut it off, that portion of the barrel isn't helping velocity either way. A 1.5-5 power vx would be a good choice and make it a hunter/defense for alaska. It's totally up to what you like, open sights and a gunsmith on that are a given, you will only need to replace the front sight? A rear sight if it still has the drillings for it can be found without digging too deep

Yeah, I'm curious also. Most CZ550M's in .375 are going for right around $1100, +/-. Add another 2-300 for the laminate or kevlar stock.
A ported, 20" barrel wouldn't scare me off a bit. And the teflon coating might be a good choice in wet weather. I would set the wood stock aside and buy a B&C stock and do a little grinding and filling with some AcraGel. Then you will have a perfectly acceptable "using" gun for moose and bear in the alders.

20" barrel is ideal for most hunting situations and ranges. Cartridge has enough power that losing 100fps isnt a problem. Ive been hunting with a 338 with 20" bbl for years and wouldnt want it any other way! As for the paint job, If youre a hunter, it is a plus! if you are a looker and a talker, better get yourself one of those shine jobs like the weatherby wood stocks come with!!! I like a good composite stock that I can throw in the truck and not worry about and I know it will kill anything I point it at wiith one shot!

I have a Winchester M70 375H&H. Some friends and I all have 20 inch barrels on our 375 H&H rifles. On the chronograph the difference between a 24 and 20 inch barrel was 30 to 50 fps.
Just sneek up 4" closer before you shoot and the game will never notice any difference.
well as accurate and soft shooting as this ting turned out to be i'm definitely gonna spend some time with it.

I consider those rifle built by the Whitworth Rifle Company to be the true Whitworth Rifles. They were assembled and proofed in England and some made their way to the US. After the assembly and sales distribution was transferred to Virginia the assembly changed slightly to ensure profitability and less hand assembly, polishing, soldering and quality stockwork became the standard. Some of the Mark X's I have were indeed assembled and proofed in England before import but they are few and far between.
The Mark X action is indeed the same as produced by Zastava but it is my understanding that the original manufactured parts and pieces were sold off and the later assembly was a matter of loose parts rather that the continuity of original manufacture. As the production grows larger the machinery and tooling are not as fine.
This is my opinion and conjecture as there is very little information about serial numbers and changes which took place. I only found one book with research in it. Check Bolt Action Rifles

If I'm sneaking through the thick stuff and need a shorter rifle I just use my Ruger #1 with the standard barrel and shorter action. Works like a charm.

If you can pick that up for $400. Hell grab it and screw a new barrel on it whenever. Good Grief. I'd pay that just for the action if it were a southpaw.
