Wasn't sure if a 35 cal counted as a "big bore", but it looks like there are other 35 cal posts on here.

I am looking at a 35 cal build using a 16" twist barrel. This will be a 358 Win or 35 Whelen. Will a 16" twist stabilize 250gr bullets at those velocities?? I see where some like a 12" twist for the 358 Win. I have a Rem 700 in 358 Norma that likes 250gr bullets. This barrel started off life as a 35 Whelen. Anybody know what twist rate Rem used for their 700 in 35 Whelen??

Remington uses a 1-16. I have built a couple of 35's and if you gave me a 1-14 or a 1-16 I would never give it or sell it to a friend. Get a 1-10 (first choice) or a 1-12.

I own and shoot shot several Remington 35 Whelen rifles, all with the 1:16 twist. All these rifles have proven accurate with 250 Speer, Hornady and Nosler bullets. They'll stabilize the 225 TSX with no problem which is longer than the 250 bullets I just mentioned. Twist in Remington's 35s is often criticized, but with the Whelen its not an issue. If buying a barrel I could be talked into 1:12, but no faster.

The 1:16" gets 'squirrely' at well above 250gr projectiles in weight. Only time I had a 35Whelen with 1:16" show tipping was with Woodleigh's 310gr RN soft ... but it was at 200 yards. That same projectile will show tipping in a 358Win at 100yards with a 1:14" barrel. Unless you'll make a habit of shooting the really heavy pills, 1:16" is absolutely fine.

Having said that ... my 358Norma sports a 1:12" and whenever given a choice I always go faster rather than select a 1:16". Both my 358Win rifles carry 1:14" and have shot upto 286gr RN (drawn down Woodleigh 9.3mm projectiles) well.

1 in 14" would probably be better or go 1 in 12" to run the heavies if needed.

My 358 Norma is a 12"

With a Rem 700 classic in 350 Rem Mag, can you load 225 TSX... or are they too long for the mag box? Mine should be a 1/16 twist.

The reason I ask is; I just picked up a Rem 760 in 35 Rem. My old Lyman book says that it has a 16" twist. I don't want to change the barrel, just want to make this a 358 Win or 35 Whelen. The heaviest I will shoot in it will be 250gr with the exception of seeing how some 285gr cast bullets do. If I need more bullet I will reach for the Norma even though it has the same twist. I have some old Norma RN bullets at 280gr that shoot good from the 358 Norma.

I would imagine a 225 Nosler Partition would be a fine bullet in your rifle. I've used the 225 and the 250 NP in my Norma and could see a bit of difference.

I found that my 700 Classic 35 Whelen with 16 twist would shoot Hornady 180gr, 200gr and Federal 225gr TBBC bullets the same POI. When sighted in with the lite bullets the 250gr would be 4 inches lower. If I wanted to shoot 250's I would have to sight in for that weight.

I use 225 Barnes TSX in my Remington 673, 350 RM and it shoots fine. It's a longish bullet and just barely fits in my 2.8" magazine. I had a thread in the "ask the gunwriters" section about the 1/16 twist and heavier bullets. JB said this twist would stabilize up to 250 grain bullets, but not heavier.

Can't fit the 250's in my 350 RM, but am working up loads in my 35 Whelen for the Hornady 250's.

I also have a 358Win in a Rem 760 rebore (by JES)done with a 1/14. Since I had the choice, I went with the faster twist.

For the 358 Norma, I go at least 1 in 14 and as others have said, 1 in 12.

My 358 Win has a 1:12 twist and most think this is the proper twist for this particular caliber. I would agree. My Ruger has a 22" barrel is accurate with 200gr thru 250gr bullets.

went with a 1-12" on my .358 WSM, but i have to admit the 1-16" tubes on my M7 and M600 .350s seem to work ok

Who is "most" that think the 1 in 12 is the proper twist for a 358 WIn...or were you meaning for a 358 Norma?

There are a ton of Remingtons out there with a 1 in 16 twist and a bunch of Rugers with a 1 in 14 twist.

I have had two 358wins made and a Norma, Unless you have desire to shoot bullets over 250g a 1 in 14 would be fine as would a 1 in 12. I don;t see an upside to the 1 in 16 and as others have said its likely close the edge for stability with lead cored 250's and possibly the heavier copper bullets.

My experience would say that the most useful bullets in a 358win are the 200 hor sp, 200 tsx/ttsx and now the 180g TTSX and the 225 NP. if you want to shoot a 250g the Hor RN works well. All of these bullets are well served 1 in 14 or 1 in 12.

Have built several 35's, a couple 358 Win's, 35 Whelen AI, 358 Norma, 35x68S.
All are on 12 twist barrels. First 35 built was a 16 twist and would not shoot but the lightest bullet. Don't know if it was the barrel or not but the next smith recommended a 12 twist and have went that route for the rest of my 35 builds with success.

Cowboy Bart, I rechambered a 760 in 35 Rem to 35 Whelen have 3 pages of loading data for it. It shot 200 gr to 250 gr bullets accuratly. Had to modify it some for the long 250 gr loads to eject a loaded round.

WHY? The 35 Remington is a great cartridge! Try it, you'll like it.
