Specifically I have a couple Ruger #1's - one in .475 Turnbull, one in .458 Win Mag. I'm thinking of running some of the quality WFN/LFN hardcast through both of them - and I'm curious how fast they can go before leading or other undesirable performance results. Most likely looking at Beartooth or Cast Performance.
We're running hard cast LBT bullets 1900 fps through our Marlin 1895 45-70's with a gas check and no leading.
I ran my 350gn cast bullet to 2415fps (87gn H4350) through my 404 Jeffery for better than ok accuracy with open sights. the powder noted 2209 is ADI 2209 and also sold as H4350

63gn 2209/H4350 gave a very comfortable 1900fps

I load my 500gn hard cast synthetic coated WestCasting projectiles to 1600fps in my 458WM without leading. Not gas checked either.

I use 38gn of AR2207 with a filler (Dakron) and magnum primers.
Hey Tex, got a crazy Bud that runs the 525 gr Cast Performance wfngc bullets to 2200 fps in his 50-110 WCF [new rifle of course] with no leading.

Recoil is horrendous as would be expected, I routinely run the same bullet to an easy 1875 fps in mine.
cool. CP and Beartooth both have some 420's. Supposedly the .475 T can run 400's at 2000 fps. That's out of a lever gun; I suspect the #1 would allow stiffer charges.

Of course, I could always load the 500gr Woodleighs, too, that they make for the .470 Nitro smile
Lot of very nice [EFFECTIVE] choices with the 475 Turnbull, and yes on the #1 handling about all you wanna throw at it or the brass can handle.
Actually,it is the proper sizing of the slug that makes or breaks the performance and leading/non-leading factor. .001 over is the target sizing.

eek A 525 at 2200??? THAT is within the realm of the dastardly 505 Gibbs!! Horrendous AIN'T the word!!! eek

Yup, my slugs mic at .512", as to your other post, hell yes, his rifle has a crescent steel butt like mine and is about a pound lighter. shocked, that sombitch really boots.
eek eekA crescent steel buttplate on a rifle that recoils like a 505 Gibbs!!!!!! Is your friend into S&M perchance???? eek grin Does he keep an orthopedic surgeon on retainer???? grin
I recall shooting your 50-110 and didn't think it was that bad, but 300 fps (more) would be very different smile
I wouldn't shoot that damned thing for money...
It was pretty fun, watching a skinny guy shoot Gunners...

smile
No ET, he's just a crazy crackkhead like me. grin

You are correct Tex, 300+ more feet and a pound less, holeehell!!!!!

Sharpssguy, you get equal performance and penetration with mucho less recoil in any of your many 45 cal Sharps Rifles, maybe I'll learn someday....................smile

My 50 cracked the frame on Rockchucker, Tex, that WAS funnylaugh laugh
The quality of the bore, i.e. smoothness without machining marks on the rifling and concentricity of the bore matters greatly. Actually, no such thing as hard cast bullets. You want some degree of softness so bore will be sealed. I've found that bullets cast of wheel weights with 1% tin added to be best with perhaps a .25% of Lino added. This can be pushed to 1800-1900 with little to no leading. Add copper or aluminum gaschecks and they can be pushed to 2400. Yes proper sizing is very important.

The simple question of how fast leads to a less than simple answer of it depends. It depends on your bullet alloy and hardness, bullet size, chamber throat dimensions, bullet lube and the peak pressure your load produces. Make sure you scrub all jacket fouling out of your bore before shooting cast bullets as jacket fouling can really exacerbate leading. Here's how I look at various velocities with cast bullets in rifles and the difficulty you'll have achieving accuracy at those speeds

Up to 1800 fps, childs play, nothing special needed other than a properly sized bullet and a clean bore

Up to 2200 fps, college level, some tinkering may be needed to get good results but nothing exceptional

Up to 2400 fps, graduate level, expect some serious tinkering including casting your own bullets and playing with alloys, hardness and different lubes.

Over 2400 fps, doctoral level, you'll be putting in some time to get success at this level and most will give up before achieving success, not impossible but you have to figure out how much time you have to invest and the benefits.
Well, I ordered some 425gr CP's for the .475. It will be interesting to see how they work...

Pat, you bringing that to Quemado? I've got some LBT style 480 gr WFNGC's from an Accurate mould I'll bring you if you want to try them.

I run 515 gr. LBT WFNGC's at 2,250 from my .470 NE with no problem.

David

yes, I'll bring it. Not sure just yet what I will load in it. It is superbly accurate with the 500 gr Woodleigh SP's.

The case has about 5% less capacity than the .458 win, so I don't see matching .470 Nitro loads, even with the long throat.

A few 500gr rounds at the bench, though, and the 355gr Gas checked WFN's for the .480 Ruger start sounding more appealing... smile
If you go real fast they don't, even without dipped

in lube.Needs slight spray coating.

Our 585HE gets 440-540-640g to and over 3000.

No leading. Ed

Ummm...I think I'll pass on that in a 9 lb rifle, with no silly muzzle brake. smile

BTW, the 500 Woodleighs launched at 1975 fps will shoot clean through a 2 foot diameter tree stump. grin
Were you able to hit anything with the foster slug?grin..
