I really like the one they call the Winchester Hunter (new model), but I'm not sure if the comb is too high for the iron sights on the Safari Express. I have that stock in other rifles, but none of them have irons.

Anybody have this rifle in this stock? Obviously the Safari model or the Classic would work (as would others), but I like the raised comb of the Hunter.
With my rounder face, I couldn't get to the irons with that stock. I had to stick with those that have more drop. The high cheek piece is designed for either a scope or a skinny face!
Echols Legend is a compromise between irons and scope. Good cheek weld for scope, firm cheek weld for irons. To me the Legend is THE best M-70 Express stock. D'Arcy now offers the same stock for M-700's. Give him a call, he's easy to talk to and very helpful.

Not a McM exactly, but McM does make them for D'Arcy. So, it's the un-McM, McM... grin

The "un-cola" of sorts... cool

Here's a .404J I built on a .300 RUM donor.

Here it is with scope before I painted it.

Nice rig in a Classic cartridge Dirtfarmer smile

Don't see many 404 Jeffs these days...... cool
Thanks, PR.

I sold this one after rotator cuff surgery.

It did turn out real nice and the new owner seems happy with it.

I went with the Winchester Express on my 416 and am more than pleased. It has a touch more drop than the Echol's and use of both open sights and optics requires just a slight movement of my head. It also dropped 1/2# from the rifle.

I have the Echols Legend in another Model 70 Safari Express. I love it, but by the time you buy it from Darcy, have the stock finished including cutting the ejection port and bolt notch, having it painted, having a recoil pad put on, and then pillar bedding, you're way up there in cost. Honestly, I'm not sure it's that much better than the McMillan Express.
Oh yeah, and that too,..

Well, I did all that stuff myself, including paint. The basic $600 was pretty steep. If I had to pay for everything I did, it would have gotten real expensive. Thankfully I can do a lot of that work.

I've always enjoyed looking at the gun. You did a great job with it.

I have a M70 stainless 375h&h - was going thru the stock selection a year ago and went with the Express like Ed's (saw his pics, think he posted pic's on my thread then as well). Only exception is mine is GAP camo - I'll post a pic tomorrow. I'm very happy with it.
I put a McMillan Super Grade with magnum fill on my .375 H&H Stainless Classic (very similar size and weight to Safari Express). Seems to work fine with the iron sights.

I'm curious about the McMillan Safari stocks. Does the butt on them have a bit more surface area?

I really like the newer South Carolina M70 Safari Express stocks. They are like a Supergrade stock except more broadly proportioned, including surface area at the butt. An excellent design that I hope McMillan will duplicate. The bigger the cushion, the better the pushin'.
