Say you got a stainless classic Model 70 action laying around. How would you go about building a 375 H&H? What barrel, stock, sights, etc?

At one time I had a New Haven stainless Model 70, but the barrel contour was more like a club and more or less ruined the rifle, imo.

I want to build a dedicated, all-weather brown bear rifle.

Lilja #4 contour finished at 23" (Krieger et al won't do a light SS barrel). I did not look up the dimensions on the barrel but would want it tapered to about .680 or so at the muzzle.

Echols Legend with his recommended fill weight. Bansner or Brown Precision stock works, too.

Planned and built pretty much this same rifle 5-6 years ago for a left handed friend on a left hand M70 and Brown stock. Scoped, it came in a hair under 8 pounds.

Match grade SS in one of several quality barrel manufacturers,24" of the lightest contour offered, express sights, quality syn. stock, quick detachable base/rings(this gives you a back-up scope and irons), and as an option make it an AI. I think you'd be pretty happy. memtb

my next .375 is gonna be 458 Win's recipe of a stainless M-70 375 cut to 20" and turned down to the ftw contour and a McMillan M-70 ftw stock.
Toad, don't you have something similar in a RUM??

Here's what I'm thinking as of now:

Lilja #4 stainless cut to 22" or 23".
NEGC front and rear sights
McMillan Supergrade stock w/standard fill
Talley QD base/ring combo
Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20 scope

Anyone know if there is a website that has Lilja barrels in stock?

I have a M70 in .375 AI, but it has the factory contour bbl cut to 21". my .375 RUMs are both M700s and they come in at almost 2# lighter than the M70

I do want to have the M70 modified as per Phil's blueprint.

While I did not build it I am pretty pleased with the M70 Classic Stainless I bought here that has had the barrel set back and chamber recut, shortened to 22 1/2", deeply fluted and bedded into a Brown Pounder (weighs 21 oz finished). It carries well, points extremely well and shoots OK so far. Still playing with OAL with the 270 gr TSX.

Nice rifle EdM.... I'll keep using my old heavy model 70 just the way it is...

I'd have PacNor put a 23" number 4 on it. I'd put it in an echols stock with Wiebe mag and metal. Only hard part is deciding how to mount the scope. I would not put iron sights on it.

BSA,

I too have a classic 375 H&H, a BRNO ZKK-602. I just don't want to take to Alaska in the spring. It is a fine shooter though and not as heavy as the current CZ's. Seems the Karnis refinished stock goes 26 oz... Either way, all great rifles we have.

Ed, I agree. You have some beauties...

Already having had a NECG sights and barrel band installed, I went a similar route as EdM with my 375H&H M70 SS. Sent the gun to twisted barrel and had the barrel deeply fluted and the action slabbed. Then I sent it off to Rick at Extreme Rifle Works and had the shank turned down similar WIN featherweight. I then had him install it in a MPI Mountain Rifle stock with aluminum PT&G bottom metal.

Wearing a Leupold 1.5-5 in Talley UL rings, the gun weighs 7lb 2oz and is my idea of a perfect 375.
A few more examples. Both in 375 H&H.
