very nice rifle. I bet the recoil will knock the slobber outta you too.
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Big Boomer. - 11/22/15
It does get your attention. Shot it 10 times yesterday and survived. wink

Not going to put a scope on it either.

Good For You! eek
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Big Boomer. - 11/22/15
Have some loading data for it that's not as hot. Just waiting on dies and bullets the previous owner has.

Did kill a charging brick with it.

Ken, That's a great looking rifle, send it to me I have about worn out my 450-H shooting pigs. I'll keep it warm for you. Rio7

My PH in Zim actually carried one of those....it was given to him, and that made it the only thing he could afford. It had not a vestige of finish on either wood or metal, and the back sight was gone so he filed one out of pig iron and epoxied it into place! It worked!
His had a brake on it, and in the heat of the moment when my buffalo couldn't decide to live or die, he fired that thing about four feet to my left. I never noticed it grin
I delighted in showing his rifle to my hunting partner, who was quite the Weatherby fan, knowing full well the beat up old turd would put him into a catatonic state.... smile

My teeth hurt looking at that.

How'd it shoot?
Posted By: elkhunternm Re: Big Boomer. - 11/22/15
Mine has been to Africa 3 times,as the previous owner killed 3 elephant with it.

Mine has the Pendleton brake on it.

FF,have not put it on paper yet, took it out yesterday just to shoot it.

On the recoil table Chuck Hawkes published,
my 375h&h has a recoil energy of around 36.1...
Your 460 has a recoil energy of around 99.6...

So, everytime you shoot a round, you're producing 3-times as much recoil energy. (wow!)

That will indeed, "knock the slobber" right out of a normal human being....and no-doubt hit like "the hammer of Thor" on any unsuspecting game animal!

Yours is prettier than mine but I still like mine:

It doesn't hurt a bit.

The .460 is an amazingly accurate cartridge. Half inch groups are common and I shot many 5 shot groups under .7 MOA. An easy load that always delivered half MOS was 115gn of IMR 4064 or Varget for a velocity right on 2500fps.

The most powerful load I used on buffalo consumed the 550gn Woodleigh Weldcore over 121 grains of IMR 4831 for a velocity of 2509fps generating 7690FPE. This load shot just on an inch in my rifle.

The most powerful load worked up used the 600 grain Barnes RN over 116gn of IMR 4350 for 2460fps which generates 8064 FPE.

A terrific load used the 500gn Swift A-Frame over 123gn IMR 4350 for 2678fps and 7964FPE though I settled on 1 grain less for better accuracy.

Naturally, you can tailor loads to your own recoil preference or replicate the .458 and Lott versions if you wish.

John,

You mean 115 grains of 4350 smile

You forgot to mention the wood on your 460 makes most rifle wood look like [bleep].

Exactly right Mike.
The accuracy load was 500gn Hornady over 115gn of 4350. Also worked with 760 for the same charge and both chronographed at 2500fps even.

The AR2208 (Varget) load was best suited to the 400 grainers I liked, though max was at 119 grains for 2900fps.

I sent my loads to the OP, so he has all the correct data.

Yup,have the data. Just waiting on the dies the previous owner has, along with whatever bullets he has.

That should cover everything with hair and if they ever open whale season. Very nice

Thank you.

Yup.

All, please consider load data a ball oark reference as even though I know a lot of my loads intimately, Typing from a phone generates typo's and if I don't catch it quick enough or can't get back on the site for a few days, can miss an error.
Even this small message contained 5 errors I had to edit before sending.

When a reader approaches me for loads directly, I email my load notes directly. Make that 6 typo's. Nope 8.
Happy Thanksgiving weekend.
John
Ps: Found another one, 9.
