Next time you make some chili, shred a small head of cabbage and add it to the chili for 30-60 minutes on simmer or with the crockpot on low.
It's fugging good. Adds a different texture and is just downright good.
IMO it's best with the ground meat varieties as opposed to cubed.

This is Chile....
I have some ancho chiles and some anaheim chiles roasted and ready for rellenos tonight

Admit it..you put beans in too!
I make a similar chili to Barts but with the chuck swapped out for ground elk.
I've been adding green chili and salsa verde and I really like the added flavor. I think I'll try Flave's idea above and see how it turns out.

Sounds good. I might even try it. Bet that recipe increases the gas production around Havre!

Hmmmmmmmmmm....OK!
DUDE! As Keith would say. "You're fixin' to get banned!!"
BUT I do prefer ground beef in chili so maybe this is like stuffed cabbage? Hmmmm.... OK!

That sounds really good........but instead of the cabbage you could substitute beans
OMFG!
cabbage can be added to anything and its good. cabbage is the wonder food. or wait, its the Uber food.
I have mixed feeling on the stuff that is sold as "Chili" over here..I like the hot/spicy flavour, but don't care for the kidney beans that seem to be a mandatory ingredient..
Maybe it would be better with just plain kidneys...I love kidney stew (sorry no cabbage)

Steak and kidney pie ! OH MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY !
Not to hijack the thread, but, when I tried the steak, and kidney pie, I though it tasted a tab bit like liver.
Is that the taste?
Chili... Just Hear Me Out
>plugs ears<
No way, having lived most of my life in "poland", cabbage should be reserved for church basement pot-lucks and mangled cole slaw at neighborhood get-togethers....

Not to me, never tasted liverish or anything similar. But then again I was taught how to make it from one of the smartest and nicest Welsh gentleman ever. He could cook like a dream, and he taught me a trick or two when it came to certain British dishes, maybe the secret is in his cooking tricks.

All you "no beans" guys have got to get over yourselves!

Start with an appetizer of a couple of pickled eggs, dump down a bowl or two of the above chili washed down with Miller beer or two and we are flaring like a refinery when the Cat Cracker trips.
Miss Lynn, I would SOOOOOOO appreciate it if you would start another thread on steak and kidney pie...I have access to good ingredients, but mine also, tastes "livery".
Just try it you ornery fuggs.
Travis
Trav, I'll give it a shot. I love cabbage - adds a great texture and depth to many dishes. Have you tried roasting cabbage "steaks" yet?
I'll give it a whirl. Heck, the wife is over due for a Dutch Oven treatment any way...
Cabbage and beans in my chili?? [bleep], next thing you know you'll be putting chocolate in it.
Secret ingredient right there.
Just try it you ornery fuggs.

I'll likely try the cabbage in the chili....I seem to be using it more and more in other dishes instead of lettuce; taco salad, crappie fish tacos, etc.
Recently, I started adding finely shredded carrots to the chili pot. Fun to experiment as I'm not a purist.

Most of these morons don't understand chili is supposed to be a gaggle of schit that needs cooking.
Especially Texans. They think it's an "art."

No.
But that sounds good. And deadly.

I sometimes mix 1/2 pound of burger in with my cabbage when making coleslaw...

too late
shred a small head of cabbage and add it to the chili
Staring in disbelief...nobody's buyin it...
Cabbage steaks - cut 1 1/4" "steaks" starting at the top and working toward the core. Preheat oven to 375, rub each side of steak with EVOO, sprinkle with coarse salt, coarse black pepper, and rub a cut garlic clove all over, or spread some minced garlic on one side. Bake on cookie sheet for 30-45 minutes, or until outer leaves are dark brown and the center is tender. They're fantastic. And yes, deadly.
These kinds of threads are causing me to have serious nightmares!!
Pull the mattress over your ears and the demons will cease.
Momma said there'd be days like this.

Making chili tonight and a pot of beans. Dang sure won't be any cabbage any where near my house.
I love chili, I love cabbage, hell, I'm even a Polack....But that sounds flat fuggin' wrong.
I'll try it.
You Georgia boys. I just don't know.....

Kinda' funny how those beans just sorta' accidentally fall into the chili huh??
That way when you combine them at the table you can still claim to be a purist? Just combine them in the pot and be done with it. They'll end up together anyway.
buwaahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!
Exactly right Mike!
I'll say it right now......I like beans in my chili!
I also like Cincy chili 4-way!
There! Y'all take that!!!
and frankly, I prefer ground meats!! I know, I know!
You Georgia boys. I just don't know.....
Ain't skeered!
Hell, I ain't no snobby purist. I'll even toss some beans in wid it!
I am going to try the cabbage. Ground beef and cabbage are a naturally good combination.
Also, all my sisters are vegetarians so who knows...maybe I can come up with a vege chili using cabbage.
and frankly, I prefer ground meats!! I know, I know!
Especially for mustard-free burgers!
Buzinga!
See what I did there?

You could have at least left it at something less bad like being a necrophiliac.
Hey, now. there aren't beans in it!
My bride grew up in Cincy and when there to visit her Mom, Skyline is as obligatory a visit as Graeter's ice cream!
it took me a while to enjoy chili that had baking spices in it, but I like it now.
In my defense, I have never fired a 270 though.

Hmmmmm but you touched one right? Which by proxy makes you just as guilty.
I once picked up a 270 cartridge at camp and felt so..well...dirty!!
. Forced me to make love to the 280.
