Folks,

I have a size L BGE with the wheels stands and other items, all still banded together in their boxes. I won the grill in a silent auction around Halloween. I was excited about it at first, now I'm thinking of just selling it as it's still NIB. The thing is so fuggin heavy and seems like a total pain in the azz. Not even sure how I could get it out of the box, assembled and back to the pool deck without breaking the thing. Need advice here, sell it or try to make it work. What say you?

Thanks

Don't own one yet, I see one in the future. Have a friend who won one also, warranty went to the purchaser as long as it was still unused.

Its not hard to put together,I wheel mine from garage to back pool patio very easily

Posted By: byc Re: Not sure about BGE - 03/23/15
Well one thing is for sure. There's a ton of help and knowledge here to keep you going forever.

I would keep it because you will never regret it. I promise!!

Besides, you can darn near get as much for a used one as new. If you don't like it sell after you at least try.

I use my WSM and my pellet smoker waaaaaaaaayyyyyy more than my BGE. Both are capable of turning out fabulous food as it's the cook not the cooker.

The BGE is overpriced patio bling IMO that doesn't justify the additional outlay.

Oh, but it can sear! BFD. I'm searing using a #10 can the some green beans came in with some holes poked in it and a charcoal grate and it hits over 900 degrees.

Selling it today to another 24HCF member. I wish him well in his new cooking adventure but honestly can't bring myself to buy into the hype and chant the BGE mantra.

While I doubt that I ever will fork over the $$'s required to purchase a BGE, if I were to win one I'd certainly put it to good use.

Heck Mike I would drive out and pick it up. But I'm afraid I'd be knocked out and tied up in a room under the stairs!! laugh
Posted By: eh76 Re: Not sure about BGE - 03/23/15
FWIW I labored a long time over deciding whether or not to buy one. Glad I did as it was one of the better investments I have made. I run mine all year long unless it is just too nasty to be outside. It will light when it is so cold my propane grill won't. I use it as an oven, a grill a smoker, a cold smoker. Lots of guidance here on this forum and one old sourpuss it seems (gotcha Denny! laugh )

I cold smoked 6 or 8 lbs of cheddar cheese in January with mine. After aging it for 2 months it disappears fast around here. A buddy at work told me he would buy all the cheddar cheese I cared to smoke as long as I shared with him smile

I've been all jacked up on Dew!!! BaHaHaHa!

In all seriousness though, my Eggs are pure enjoyment. It's something I can do that helps me blow some steam off at the end of a work day and at the same time the Misses appreciates me helping out with the meals. Plus, she can't count how many beers I consume if I'm doing the cooking outside. Lol! I cook on my Eggs 3 or 4 days a week ... even more when weather is good.

Understood, no doubt we all have our "toys",

As Denny says, overpriced patio bling to some.

I make Ribs on my weber, they taste good,

I make Ribs in my smoker, they taste good.

I'll take a good cook with an average grill, over an average cook with a good grill, know what I mean?

I'm about to order a 1800 dollar Lowrance depth finder for my boat, just to basically tell me how deep the water is, LOL!

Go figure.

Posted By: rem141r Re: Not sure about BGE - 03/24/15
sell that monster and get a weber 22" kettle with the smokenator 1000 insert. if you want to splurge, get a kettle pizza adapter too. and you can pick the whole thing up and plunk it into the back of your truck without ripping yer nutsack.
Posted By: byc Re: Not sure about BGE - 03/24/15
Yup!!! All I can tell you boys is that I still have my first ceramic BGE purchased almost 20 years ago at $399. It works better than anything I have in the shop. $399 over 20 years and still ticking. Not bad.

I've had the Primo Oval for close to the same and it works even better. Well about the same but I still dig the oval design over the BGE.

Actually, my first BGE was the older terra cotta clay pot design. It's also still ticking up on the family Biltmore mountain. Just can't take her over 400 degrees or so.

How can you beat 20-25 years out of a cooker???

And BTW...favorite grill is my $30 Weber Smokey Joe! A man can never have too many grills/smokers!! Sound familiar?? wink

Guess I'll have to journey to a genyoowhine KCBS comp this summer to do some rekon.

Betcha there's more WSMs than BGEs in attendance.

Betcha there's more offsets than WSMs & BGEs combined.

Guess I'll have to call David Klose.

Eggheads – Cult of The Big Green Egg

“Music has Deadheads. Football has Cheeseheads. And barbecue has Eggheads. You’ll know this last group by the egg-shaped green grills they’ll be standing next to, tongs in hand, looking to extol the virtues of the Big Green Egg. Their mantra goes something like this… It’s foolproof, fuel-efficient, and can cook anything from fish and steak to pizza and pie. You have to get one. Now.”

No sir. What you bought was an outdoor oven. Plain and simple.

I've baked bread, lasagna mac & cheese and pizza on that thing. Tin foil will reduce smoke intake.

I like to poke fun at the eggheads, but sure as hell wouldn't get rid of it without some experimentation.

That said, Kenneth and Dave ate correct, not much you can't do with a $40.00 Weber. Sure it will take more work ( read, skill), but they are damned sure another tool every back porch gourmet needs to know how to use.

Heck, I'm a mechanic, and there are quite a few items in my box that don't get used often. But they sure make the process easier.

2 things ~

Why did you buy one?

&

Did you give it a fair chance? (because I'll admit there was a learning curve with mine)
Posted By: 284LUVR Re: Not sure about BGE - 03/25/15
RickyBobby,

1) I guess my decision was influenced by BGE owners foaming at the mouth over the "miracle cooker"

2) Yes, gave it the good old college try and went through several bags of lump in the process to form an honest personal opinion.

3) It's a great cooker but I have many years of cooking under my belt with a WSM and recently added a Traeger to the collection with excellent results.

4) The honest bottom line is that I never noticed any marked difference in my cooking experiences with the BGE over the WSM that I've been using for many years as well as the new pellet smoker so I offered it to a friend at a fair price and wish him a lifetime of fun and good eats with it.

5) To a lessor extent the decision to sell was the almost mandatory usage of lump charcoal in the BGE which is almost impossible to find in my area.

6) Please continue to enjoy your blossoming collection of BGEs.

7) It's the cook not the cooker JMHO

8) Now go cook something for your friends and family and please share with us.

Throw in cookers other than offsets like drums, gravity feeds, etc and that bet I'll take. Offsets were great in their day, but there are much better cookers out there now that aren't so heavily affected by humidity and ambient temperature.

Michael, Michael, Michael, What am I gonna do with you. I guess we need a sarcasm icon because the above was just drippin' wit it.

I have tons of free wood runnin' out my azz so an offset would be fun to run but it's just me and Muttly so that's prolly not going to happen as I'm pretty content now.

Ran a modded Chargriller Smokin' Pro for a season or two but gave it to my wife's son prior to our move to WV. It made good eats.

As someone who was pretty much set on getting a Kamado Joe this spring (BGE style) - what's the advantage of a WSM over the flower pot?

The reason I was thinking KJ was efficiency in burn, particularly in the winter.

Have you noticed a difference between WSM/BGE when it comes to maintaining temps/lump expenditure?

Figure DigiQ for each- regardless.

I can easily smoke at 225-250 for 20 plus hours on one decent load of lump in my Egg or KJ. WSM? Not a chance..

Agree 100% You will not find anything that burns more efficiently than a kamado style cooker.

I have a Pellet grill as well, another advantage to the BGE over most smokers is keeping things moist. For example I really hate wrapping a brisket, I've tried a couple on the Traeger and wrapping is almost a must. I never have to open the lid on the BGE and don't want to.
