I keep hearing about Wegmans here and elsewhere.
Is it all that?
If so, why the hell isn't there one here??
My buddy and son came in from PA last week and stayed a few days to bird hunt, he couldn't shut up about Wegmans???? Even his 12YO son chimed in about the virtues of Wegmans???
It isn't fair!! Apparently!
We are getting a ALDI, is it any account?

Great selection. High $$$$$$

ALDIs here smells like you would if you went dumpster diving for your food. This after being open about three weeks? Their prices are only competitive, not better. Guess where I will be shopping?

Don't know why your Aldi's is like that. I really like mine. The prices on many items are far better than competitive and the competition here is stiff.

We're basically stuck with 'Super Krogers' and a Food Lion every 4th block, and Walmart[but I don't really consider their meat to be meat].
We have a small local that has decent meats, but they're fading fast. frown

A grocery store every 4 blocks ?

Maybe I misread but,........

Ok I exaggerated a tad. Food Lion seems to put a store on either side of all other grocers around here. Tiny little worthless stores IMO.

Sometimes when shopping @ FL they seem to discontinue new products after a brief time on their shelves but never a problem asking them to order for me or just to restock. ????????

We have a small store here and a WM. That's it. No way in hell I'd go back to city living. It all works out in the end. Thumbs up.

We have a Wegmans, and we shop there pretty often. They have fresh breads, good fruit and veggies. Some things are more expensive, but the quality is worth it. For example, we don't pitch fruit from Wegmans because it is better and we generally don't buy excess due to the price. They have some incredible number of cheeses, certainly hundreds. They also have more European foods. They also have prepared food, and while expensive it is convenient. We often get prepared food and take the dogs out to a park for dinner in the warmer months. No fuss, and it gives time to get out after work.

I found Aldi's when I moved to Brisbane Australia and they were dumps.

HEB does a good job here though I will head to their Central Market stores for a few items. I also hit Whole Foods every now and again. I too will throw a bit of cash for quality meat and produce.

We love Aldi's, none real close. They have a lot of Euro brands and styles. Their chocolate is really good. Styled like Sav A Lot, but the clientele is not welfare-al-ways.

Well they are expanding at a pretty rapid rate to the south.

https://www.wegmans.com/about-us/future-store-locations.html

They're a great store. Prices on some stuff is a little higher than Safeway/Giant but some items, especially their store brands, is cheaper.

Employees know the store and if you ask where something is they will take you there.

The fish counter is amazing as is the vegetable selection. i've never bought their dry aged beef but heard good reports.

We don't have Wegman's here. Wish we did. It would add to the competition.

Feel sorry for you guys with the chitty Aldi's. They're relatively new to this area and they only build new stores, not take over existing smelly old Winn-Dixies and such. Shopped there this evening and saved a lotta dough on good stuff.

The mention about getting European and especially German imported foods is true. Sometimes they're only stocked for a short time though, which sucks.

Wegmans does not have that many stores, but I hear good things about them.
Down here, it's Publix territory. Most of the stores do a darn good job.
We have two Aldi stores here in Gainesville, a lot more of them in Miami. Decent stores, but limited selection, mostly all private brand.
In Gainesville, we also have Lucky Stores, Trader Joe, Fresh Market and Whole Foods. Losts of choices, but I'd say 95% of my shopping is at Publix.

Wegmans has 92 stores located in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.

More coming to Va and NC

We have an Aldi in the next town over, and it seems to sell mostly over run merchandise. I have only been it it twice, but it gave the impression of a Dollar General store. They are expanding the Aldi building, so I'll check it out when it is finished.

As stated earlier Wegmans has a huge cheese selection. If I'm ever visiting another then LOOK OUT CHEESE SECTION 'cause here I come.
Posted By: Raeford Re: Wegmans?? - 04/20/17
After looking at their[Wegmans] future locations it appears that we southwestern Virginians will be treated the same by Wegmans as we are in most any other ways, Non-Existent' frown
Jumping from NO[T}VA to N.C.

The Market Cafe is what sets Wegmans apart from the rest. The ready to cook meals are all good. Fish and seafood of all types always available and flown in daily. Meat, cheese, wine, all stellar.

Also their produce is always top notch and many items prepped for ready cooks.

In SC we're seeing a Wegmans wannabe called Lowes.

Most importantly are the people. By far Publix and Wegmans puts more focus on people skills than all the rest combined.

May as well be another morels mushroom post!
Out here it is Save Mart, Albertsons, and an occasional leftover/holdout Safeway.

That said, plenty of smaller ethnic choices, farmers markets, or swap meets with fresh and local products.
Posted By: byc Re: Wegmans?? - 04/22/17
Sean, Safeway is really crashing and burning in the East. Here they are simply known for having the shelves stacked to the nines.

Both the people and the quality are below par. But they do pump out the volume!!

No Wegman's here. In the greater Houston area we do have a lot of Aldis popping up. They always have really good prices on milk, bread, eggs, common cheeses, chips, various common fresh produce, and often specials on hams (.89/lb). That is about all I buy there as generally their other products are no bargain. My all around local favorite is H-E-B followed by Kroger. My M-I-L lives in rural SW Arkansas and the nearest grocery store is 7 miles away for her. The prices there are so high there she usually drives 27 miles to a Walmart to grocery shop. Just what you must endure for clean air and solitude. I could do that. I don't want to die here. Has gotten too big of a rat race here.

Henry, I hear ya on the suburban fatigue. I tell myself to look at it on the bright side and see all this hard work and effort paying off when I get to the mountains.

Aldi's has been a funny experiment. Several years ago before my Dad passed, he always raved about the one in Crystal River by his place. Planning to stock his frig and freezer before I left one time, when I went in to check that store out I wasn't very impressed. Seemed like a too small footprint for a grocery store and a lot of brands I didn't recognize. Thought of it kind of like a 5 and 10 grocery store knockoff. Ended up buying most of what I wanted to leave him with from the Publix down the street. This perception stayed with me for a few years.

I later realized the quality of the things I buy regularly are no less than what I'd get at Publix or anywhere else. As you mentioned, milk, bread, cheese, coffee creamer, chips, and some vegetables are way better priced than other stores. Their packaged meats aren't usually the best deal around, but the quality is there. And where else are you going to buy an 18" loaded frozen pizza for $4.99?

I realize everybody has their preference. But, when I can get the same quality at a much better price, I'm all over it.

Here is some of what I buy there pretty regular. Check these prices at Publix.

Milk - $2.99
Coffee creamer - $1.89
hot dog or hamburger buns/8 pk - $.89
1/2 lb of any popular cheese - $1.79 or $1.89
big bag of chips - $1.79
kielbasa - $1.89
doz eggs - $1.09
16 oz carbonated flavored waters - $.49/ea
12 oz cryovaced large sea scallops - $9.99
80/20 ground chuck - $2.59 and sometimes $1.89/lb for family pack
sliced Black Forest ham - $3.59/lb

They also have featured items from Germany every week, like pickles, cheeses, bratwurst, knockwurst, crackers, German breads, and so on.

I don't buy everything there. But, they beat the hell out of anywhere else for normal staples and I enjoy being able to frequently buy imported items at good prices.
