I just ordered a new Canon 20D. Have 10D, and sold it to friend. 10D is great camera, and 20D should be even better. More bells and whistles. More to read and learn about too. Shouldn't be to much different than my 10D. We'll see. Can't wait to get it. Got a 28/300 lens. Should bring things in nice and close. Got two 1 GB flash cards and a 512 too. Lots of memory. All ready to shoot with 8.2 mp machine. Will let you all know how it goes.

My wife wants a 10D, how much should I expect to pay for one? Any idea?

Waders,

Spend the coin on the 20D! you'll be verry happy for a long time to come!! The 10D is a nice camera but the 20D has wayyyy more things you can do with it.

You could probably get the 10D for about 7-800. You can get the digital rebel xtr 8mpx for about 1K.

Good luck in the search.

We have a 20D and a Rebel in the house. While the 20D does more than the Rebel, I prefer the rebel because my hands are small. I find it difficult to hold the 20D. The mega-pixels are the same (with the new Rebels) so the picture quality is excellent. So if your wife is a small woman, you might want to go to some camera store and try both at the same time, just for a feel.

My wife has small hands and is NOT the type to get into bells and whistles. But, she does take a ton of pictures and wants a good camera. I want to surprise her with a new camera for her birthday (Oct. 20th) but I'm hesitant to get the wrong one.

When i finally put the money on the counter i had looked at all the others available at that time. The rebels i found were the old 6mpxl models and i didn't want to upgrade in a couple years. If i had the option of the 8mpxl rebel i might have gone that route. The only thing to be worried about with the rebels is that IF you put a LARGE lens on you run the risk of warping the body. It will cause the photo's to look like they were taken in a fun house. It shouldn't harm the body permanently though. Maybe??? don't know?
If large lenses aren't in the cards then the Rebel would be the best fit. I still haven't figured out all the stuff on my 20D yet, but i'm having fun trying<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Hope this helps.

Sold my 10D for $750 used. Thought is was worth more than that, but that is what they are going for used. I checked. Sold it to a friend and wanted to be fair to all. Be hard to find a new 10D. They are discontinued.
Paid $1300 for my 20D. I paid $1269 for my 10D just a little over a year ago. The 20D operates very much like my 10D, but with a few more bells and whistles. Really fast, 8.2 meg., 5 frames per second, 1/8000th shutter, and 23 frame maximum burst. Uses same battery, flash as the 10D, so didn't have to worry about any changes there. And actually, the 20D is 3.6 oz. lighter and a few mm smaller than the 10D. Fits in the hand really nice. Quite a camera.
Rebel good camera for what you get for the price.

Wal Mart sells 10D's for $999 (if anybody cares).

Here you can get a 20D for the same price. I didn't find this site until after I ordered mine. (Sigh).

I just got one from Abe's of Main with lens and lots of goodies to include a 4 Gig Microdrive for $1700. I think I did pretty good especially since the microdrive was way cheaper than anywhere else I looked.

I can promise you the 20D is not available for that money. The game is called bait and switch, or the goods are called gray market. I suspect bait and switch.

The biggest thing is the lens. Using a lens that cannot keep up with the camera is not a great idea. A better lens and the 10D will take better pictures than the 20D and a weaker lens...

I agree Sitka. Believe me, I do my homework when buying things. I saw prices around $800 for a 20D. Buyer beware on deals like that. They don't come with batterys. No U.S. A. warranty. Not in stock. And lots more negatives. I've shopped all around for years and usually end up going back to Adorama. Buy all my film, lens, cameras, umbrellas, lighting, light meters, flashes, etc. from them. Usually have as good of prices as anyone. Don't bite on those cheaper prices you see advertised. Just remember, 'you get what you pay for.'

Catmandu , be carefull when putting your microdrive into the camera and especially when taking it out of the camera. Best to handle the microdrive by grasping it between thumb and forefinger on the narrow sides.. grasping the wider surfaces too firmly could do some damage to the microdrive.
