Now that the digital SLR prices are down to a point I'm willing to get into one, I thought I'd get some feedback on the D70s. I already a 70-300mm zoom from my 35mm slr, so I figure getting one of the D70's with the 18-70mm zoom would be a perfect fit.

Wondering if anyone has or has used the D70 and any pro's or con's of the camera.

I'm very pleased with my D70, and it's a great camera. That said, you may want to sit tight for a little while. They just announced the D200. You may want to set your sights on it, or if you prefer the lower price of the D70s, and don't need the 10 megapixels of the D200, the D70s may get a little cheaper after the D200 hits the streets.

Jeff,

Thanks for the feedback. I think 6 megapixels is plenty for what I'll be using it for, though I might sit back and wait for the price to drop. Costco has the D70s w/ 18-70 lens for under $700, so I'm pretty tempted.

I have been quite impressed with mine, that said I allready had some glass that would work with it...
The last update for the software seemed to make some difference with the spot metering. (mine is about three yrs. old), so I say the support is good, price is good, all resulting in a fine product!!!

The last thing I would recomend is to buy the best Nikon glass you can afford, spend the $$ & it will pay for itself in time.

458,

Wow, I had no idea Costco was carrying the D70. $700 seems like a pretty smoking deal with the lens, and it ain't a bad little lens either.

Wishing thinking on my part, it's the D-50 w/ lens and price is mid $700's. I read a review on the D50, and while it does most of what a D-70s does, I'll hold out for the D-70.

I use a D-70. I'm not a pro with a camera, but I am not at all impressed with the macro setting on this one. If you get to close with the 18-70mm lens the camera will not take the picture. Very frustrating. Maybe it's me?

I have been using one for about three years, primarily with the 18-70 Nikkor AF lens. I have also used one of the 100-300 Nikor AFs for wildlife photography. I have no complaints about the camera. It still surprises me with the quality of the images, even those taken under really squirrely light conditions. My wife is a fine artist specializing in landscapes and she gets amazing photographs of difficult scenes such as sunrises and sunsets with lots of different values and shading.

I heartily recomend it--it's easy to pick up and use right from the start.
