Am not camera saavy...bear with me, please.
Would like some advice. Camera that is compact/light as possible for backcountry hunting, but would work w/Fieldscope III ED. Have FS with 24 & 40x DS lens & zoom.
Not building a dance floor, so I imagine a run of the mill camera is fine

I would give Joel or one of his folks a call at Camera Land and they can match up your needs perfectly with your budget and a camera they would have up there. They do it for me all the time!

Tom, I have not done any digiscoping aside from trying to unsuccessfully hold a P&S behind my spotter. Nikon does make some adapters, and there are independent mfg adapters. There are adapters for cell phones too. I think a google search would turn up a bunch of info for you.

My digi-scoping efforts are quite limited and essentially unsuccessful. I'll admit that we've not purchased any adapters though. Attempts with standard DSLR lenses and hand holding have been complete failures. I think there is too much lens there to zero down to the small image escaping the ocular end of ones spotter. The best and most consistent captures I've seen to date have all been with hand held dime sized smart phone lenses, and some of those have been remarkably good.
Are there some about that are adept at such with their DSLR's, I so could you put up some hints and examples please?
1, I imagine a DS lens on the spotter and adapter may improve things, eh?
Not to say I have--I haven't. The main point for me is a good light Nikon "hunting" camera and secondly that it will also work w/the the spotter and the DS spotter lens.

Late seeing this. The D3200 was a gift so I didn't get to use it. I did research it, it is an entry level Nikon DSLR and not the latest model and prices reflect that. The D40 was an entry level Nikon DSLR and there are guys still buying them and I took this as a comment on the bloodline.
Appreciate it. Have been sidetracked for a bit, though--work and worry get in the way of progress.
Pondering the digi adapters...hooking up a camera body without image stabilization directly to the spotter would probably be a waste of moolah for me--too much hand tremor or wind for that matter.
The mirrorless camera like the Nikon 1, are exceptionally light--about half the weight, but no in-camera stabilization--only in the lens.
There was life before image stabilization. A well built coupler and a tripod will do it.

I've got a Nikon 1 V1 with three lenses I'd let go of if you're interested. I found it to be an interesting and capable camera. As a system I think Nikon never developed its potential and appears to be abandoning it.
