I'm a big 260 fan but wouldn't mind a little more ability to seat bullets out. I've been looking at shorter options like the creedmoor and the 6.5x47 Lapua. Is anyone running a Lapua with a 22-24" barrel? If so what kind of speeds can you get with 140's? Most of the info I've seen has been with longer barrels.

I'm thinking of a Mid weight tactical style build. Might try something mag fed.

I had one built on a Remington model 7, so i was also concerned about utilizing bullet depth, and I can reach the lands. I am amazed at how gentle it is to shoot, and how it shoots almost everything well. Mine really loves 130 Bergers at 2900+ fps and shoots 1/2 all day with this load.

For good comparison loads that are pressure tested, try Ramshot's website. E

I have built alot of them. Most of them have all been 26" tactical style builds. 130's at 3000fps, 140's at 2875 range. Has alot of good things going for it.

Ive never been able to justify a new rifle for the 100 fps difference between 6.5x55 and 6.5x47, and I love 6.5s

My first is my HEAVY tactical/sniper rig.

Surgeon action
Krieger, MTU, 26" SS, 1:8.5
AICS 1.5 stock
Shilen 2.5 lb trigger
TPS alum rings
NF 5.5-22x50 w/ NP-R1 reticle
130 Berger VLD, 40.8 H4350, CCI 450
Runs 2850 (now about 2820) and shoots mostly .5 MOA out to 1000 yds

My light, hunting, rig is as follows.

Pierce SA
Broughton 26", SS, 5c, 1:8
PTG BDL bottom metal with Rem follower, spring, mag box.
McMillan Remington Sporter, Edge filled
Pierce alum 20 MOA base
Farrell 30mm alum rings
Rifle Basix 2.5 lb
NF 2.5-10x32mm with NP-R2 reticle
140 Berger VLD, 42.1 gr Rel 17, Fed 205M
Runs 2960 fps
140 Part, 41.6 gr, Rel 17, Fed 205M

The -47 case is an absolute joy to load. Other than initial trimming to even things up, I've yet to need to trim a case in 8+ loadings. I do anneal about every 4th shot. The Surgeon's throat has grown some .080" in wear with 1100 rounds and yet just hitting 2.8" OAL; still room to grow in the AICS mag. The 130's bearing surface/boattail junction is now 3/4 the way down the neck. Shot a 5", 1000 yd, 5-shot group earlier this month.

Same gunsmith, Chris Matthews of http://longshotriflesllc.com/. Same reamer which means the same Redding Type-S FL bushing die with a .289" bushing giving me .001" neck tension. KISS

6.5-47 all the way!

6.5x47 Lapua....most accurate cartridge/rifle combo I've shot in over 60 years of shooting! Using Sierra 123 gr. HPBT and 38.5 grs. Varget I have fired several 5 shot groups from 1300 yds. that I could cover with a standard playing card! 1000 yds?? NO CONTEST!! This is a Jon Beanland build w/24" 1-8.5 Krieger tube.

Sharpsman,

That same combo (123 MK and Varget) was my runner up load. The 130 VLD and H4350 load I use just beat it out when I ran some 1000 yd .2 gr ladders such as Jason Baney advises.

I did try H4350 and the 140 VLD in my 26" "little" Pierce. Stopped at 40.5 gr when I "should" have been reaching max. Only got to around 2700 fps. Decided to not pursue H4350 further when I can push the 140 to 2900+ with Rel 17. What did you push up to with the 140/H4350 combo?

it sure looks nice but i cant find a damn thing!

guessing? i have a fast bbl and can get 2900W140 but need to find the paper to answer accurately.I use (40.3/2850)I wanted to try rl-17 and am pretty certain i could have gained more speed but i thoroughly enjoying where I am at and felt that it wasn't worth it.the last speedgoat fell at 855yds and it will be with me in Wyoming at the end of September to hit that prarie dog that i threw the first round (and only one) an inch over his head at 900.I passed on the 925 goat and it was teasing me in the scope and just had to try smile
i'll try to find my papers.

i did another basement sweep and the only thing i can conclude is i either put my 6.5x47 data in a really safe place ot tossed it so i wouldn't change anything?

i am currently using 40.3 for the 140 @2850fps without any primer pocket issues at all.I remember hitting 2900fps with pressure and backed it down,i dont think the brass would have held up very long at 2900.

Not to worry. My 42.1 grs of Rel 17 gives me 2921 fps and 8 SD. I just checked it this am @ 100 and got this 5-shot group.

Through and through, ribs in and out. My daughter used the same load in her rifle to get a one shot kill at 333 yards.
We fire 2 shots and killed 2 deer, kinda hard not to like how it worked!
Posted By: 65BR Re: 6.5x47 Lapua ?'s - 08/13/11
Who says you need a 'Mag a Num' to kill deer? LOL.

Jim, my 2 bbls are both the same contour. Would you do a 21" again if you were building? My IMR4350 260 loads and 6.5x55 loads both clocked 2780 w/very good accuracy, in my 22" Sako and Ruger K1A, so no doubt the 47 will do fine speed wise.

How is the blast in the 21"? Using 40gr of powder, should not be bad I would suppose.

Thanks.

now i gotta try it smile i have lots of 140VLD's and it is simple enough to get a pound of rl-17.

i tried rl-15 and pressure constantly climbed from getting the barrel dirty. How clean is rl-17 compared to rl-15? I didn't like rl-15 at all.

How dirty? Well, I couldn't tell you what's coming out since I haven't run a patch down my barrel since I finished the breakin last Fall. I use Ultra Bore Coat and thus my barrels are slick as snot. I "ride'em hard and put up wet". Of course living in the dry state of Utah, I can get away with that.

I will say this. When I shot a 576 yd ladder a few months back with the 140 VLD and Hunter, the initial results were VERY promising. I didn't pursue it because the Rel 17's velocities and accuracy were just too good to deviate away from. Look at those top 3 shots; 1.25" of vertical!

Do any of you guys run a 6.5x47 on a factory rem action. I understand that you have to bush the firing pin or you will get pierced primers. Still wondering if I should just run another 260 or try a creedmoor?

Bb
Posted By: Jim the Plumber Re: 6.5x47 Lapua ?'s - 08/19/11
I've 3 on factory Rem 700's. Only one is bushed. It just depends on the factory tolerances.
65BR, nominal muzzle blast. Yes for sure would do the 21" barrel again. The rifle is just heavy enough to have an 'enjoyable' recoil impulse.
Posted By: 18Echo Re: 6.5x47 Lapua ?'s - 08/22/11
Mark Gordon at SAC has a box of parts sitting at his shop I sent him. The action being used is one of the CDNN FN actions, he told me that there is no need to bush that bolt, it's good to go from factory.

I had Dave Kiff from PT&G grind up a reamer for me based off of a dummy round I sent him topped off with a 123gr AMAX. It has .187 freebore cuz I loaded the round REALLY long to use up all the case capacity. The boat tail of the bullet is the only thing below the neck/shoulder junction.

Hopefully this was not a huge mistake and it will work out for me. The 8-10 month wait is killing me.

18Echo,

It took Dave four tries to get one of my reamers right. The third one was at least close so I took it and sent it to the gunsmith. The only reason Dave finally did it correctly is the gunsmith was a friend of his who saw the original drawing and told him to do it right. At least two of the gunsmiths in this area, where his shop is, will not order from him.

I certainly hope he does better for you.
Posted By: 18Echo Re: 6.5x47 Lapua ?'s - 08/25/11
I hope so too. I've purchased 3 reamers from him. The 7Mag for 162 amax's works great. The 338-06 SAAMI has a super long amount of freebore, trying to find a load for that one now. And then the 6.5 which is still waiting to be used.

What reamers are guys using mostly now?
Posted By: 65BR Re: 6.5x47 Lapua ?'s - 08/28/11
echo - Hart did my 338/06 using a throat for 250s, only shot 200 and 225s and a few 215s, but my COL out to 3.335 IIRC was fine for the magazine, and I perhaps had a little more powder capacity fwiw.

I have only purchased one custom reamer and that is one I had Henriksen do for me. He's a one man shop so he isn't the speediest, but when I asked around about having a reamer made his name kept popping up as the best. JGS also has a pretty good rep.

Congrats Alan!

Alan, been hearing about reamers w/various freebore. Does your rifle(s) shoot 120/123s as well as say 130/139-142s?

Thanks.
Posted By: GSSP Re: 6.5x47 Lapua ?'s - 09/12/11
Cliff,

My rifle started out with a .108" freebore. Around 800-900 rounds it grew an extra .080" and hasn't grown since. It's got around 1100 plus rounds now. (I also haven't cleaned the barrel since round #300).

I only tested the 123 MK when I was matching it up against the 130 Berger VLD I chose. It shoot nearly as well with Varget.

My best friend shoots a rifle nearly identical to mine and he uses the 123 Scenar and Varget and his groups are much smaller than mine. But then, I'm only a 1/2 MOA shooter. My rifle shoots better than me.

Now, as you recall in my posts above, my "little" Pierce shoots the 140 Berger VLD to 1/2 MOA all day long with Rel 17 and Fed 205M primers.

Hope this helps.

Alan

This is what a 142smk does to an elk at about 1700fps. Although not a x47 it was similar velocity.
