I copied this chart from JBM and had a question. Sorry, I couldn't make it any larger.
With a 100 yard zero. How many clicks would I click up to hit at 450 yards? Assuming 1 click is 1/4" at 100 yards.Please provide the math also.

40.4 inches of drop at 450

1/4" click at 100 yards corresponds to 4.5 * .25 = 1.125" click at 450 yards

40.4" / (1.125" per click) = 35.91 --> use 36 clicks

If your clicks are really 1/4 MOA then you'd use 8.6 MOA drop divided by 1/4 MOA per click = 34.4 clicks --> 34 or 35 clicks

It's a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and is marked 1/4" at 100 yards.

600 yards would be 58.2 clicks??

Just a note: Since that's not a parallax adjustable scope, make sure you're well centered in the sight picture when you zero at 100 and when you go long. Not just consistently positioned shot to shot, but consistently centered.

Good to know. I plan to zero at 200. Would that be better?

BTW, I'm not looking to start shooting animals at long range anytime soon. Just trying to get the concept figured out.

Best thing to do is eliminate inches and clicks from your vocabulary now. Your scope adjusts in IPHY or "inches per hundred yards"

Jbm will output data in IPHY. Re-run your numbers in IPHY. When you adjust your scope, count 1-2-3-One, 1-2-3-Two, 1-2-3-Three, etc. trying to count to 36 or 48, or 162 gets increasingly difficult and is inferior in any regard. Think and operate in relevant units which are IPHY for your scope.

What normal long range shooters do is to range the target, in your case 450 yards, look at your data either taped to your rifle or on a PDA ballistic program, reach up to your elevation knob and dial it from 0 to 8.5

If there's no wind, put the crosshair on the target and squeeze the trigger.

Seems a little easier than any counting exercises.

The scope in question does not have a turret on it, hence the need for counting clicks. Turrets make things so much easier as you noted.

Are the "clicks" positive; do they actually click or is it a friction adjustment? Is there a scale marked in MOA on the adjustment or just witness marks? Seems it should be marked, if not, some can be put on with a little "Macgyvering"

Stoney Point makes screw on turrets for Leupolds with coin slots. May want to check availability for the Zeiss.

If nothing is available, I'm sure that the OP will want to eventually get a scope with finger adjustable knobs.

A conquest has positive clicks, I believe he is just trying to get the concept down at this point. Using what he has and learning with it, rather than spending money on something he doesn't understand at this point.

That is correct. I also plan to make something like Jeff did on his Conquest to play around with.
