Oh for Shame...

That shot on the left -

real coyote would have run of into a ditch and required a dispatch next day by a friend and a caterpillar to burry it.

Don't think you can post posts like that and not have people take notes.

One of these years I am going to make the Icebraker.

I know about the rodeo to which you refer, but I believe you're misreading the target here. What looks like a hip hit is probably just the mark made by bullet fragment side scatter hitting the head of a mounting bolt.

Good eye, math! When I shot the group, I could see that splash through the scope, and thought I had one go left and right. Always nice to walk up on a group and see it's better than you thought it was from the rifle.

The noise is about the same as a .22LR rifle.

I'm impressed by you guys who shoot accurately/precisely at distance in the wind.

Nice shooting! I like the rifle setup as well.

Those rebar target stands are quite handy. I have several that I leave out all year and can take down quickly for bush-hogging. Old firehose is what I hang my plates with.

Sweet stick Pat, and excellent shooting.... par for the course.

Side note: for those who are unfamiliar with JC a Steel Targets... that's about a half size coyote silhouette...

Do you have a quick detach on all your cans/rifles? Or do you just thread them on?

Travis
Posted By: clark98ut Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/09/14
Travis,

All mine are threaded. Currently I have a ThunderBeast 30P-1, Silencerco Sparrow, and a SWR Octane HD .45cal. I use the 22lr (Sparrow) can more than anything else so decided to order another rimfire can. Ordered a SWR/Silencerco Spectre II this time around (just to be different) and a ThunderBeast 223A.

I debated which route to take on the 223 can--quick disconnect or threaded, and in the end convinced myself to get the threaded version. My reason (possibly flawed???) was that I'll have these cans the rest of my life, and I don't want to be trying to find some quick disconnect mount 10 or 20 years from now for an obsolete can. I'll always be able to get something threaded.

Plus, it's really not that big of a deal in my opinion to thread a can on.

Ok, I have been wondering. I think I bought an Elite Iron Bravo 1. Can't even remember what the hell I ordered.

I'm hoping when I pick it up the dealer explains how the hell I'm supposed to attach it to my AR. Because I have no clue. grin

I'd be fine threading it on and leaving it as well. If I can get by without the quick detach, I will.

22LR can is next...

Travis
Posted By: clark98ut Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/09/14
The 223A is full auto rated for SBRs. Doubt I'll ever own a full auto, but I will probably own a 5.56 SBR upper and it would be nice to be able to blast away without worrying about destroying the can.

Almost went 223P-1, but got a good deal on the 223A since it was a demo unit. That and the 223P-1 is only rated for 14.5" 5.56s.
Posted By: clark98ut Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/09/14
Oh, and definitely get a 22lr can. Most of them can be run on every rimfire and also on 22 Hornet. I've got a little CZ 452 for the kids that's threaded, and it is mouse fart quiet with subsonic ammo.

The guy I ordered this one from said he sells a lot of what I bought (whatever that is) and said they're very versatile and work well with AR's.

Here's to hoping...

I have 22/45 Pro-Lite that is threaded. So I have no choice but to purchase a can for it...

Travis
Posted By: prairie_goat Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/09/14
I looked at a Bravo 1 last weekend. Fairly heavy can, but supposed to meter well. The way the threading works is it threads onto an Elite Iron muzzle brake, which is included. The one I looked at came with another brake threaded 1/2x28 as well as the 5/8x24 for 30 cal type stuff.
Posted By: deflave Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/09/14

Is the Sparrow rated for the Hornet? One of those has been on my want list for a while now.

Sure is.
Posted By: LSU fan Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/10/14
Well, thats great. So not only do I need a 22/45 Lite and a new barrel for my 10/22, I need to find a Stainless Laminate 77/22 to convert to K-Hornet. laugh
Posted By: clark98ut Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/10/14
Might check with Silencerco to be sure, but the K-Hornet might be pushing it with the added velocity, etc.
Posted By: prairie_goat Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/10/14
I suspect it's as much to do with pressure and gas volume as actual velocity. The 22 Hornet only has a 43,000 CUP SAAMI max pressure. So if a guy is loading his Hornet to hotter levels, he might blow the can off the end of the barrel.

Like you said, it's worth a call to Silencerco. Let them know what you have in mind and see what they think. Because I wouldn't want to be "that guy" who bought a can and waited 11 months, then blows it to pieces the first day out. crazy

Edit: Perusing the Hodgdon 22 Hornet data, it looks like the famous 13 grains of Lil' Gun with a 40 grain bullet for ~3000 fps is quite mild on pressure. Well within SAAMI specs. So rock on!
Posted By: LSU fan Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/10/14
No kidding. Not like thats anywhere close to being an issue at the moment but I'd definitely get the go ahead before pulling the trigger.

What's not to like about the Creedmoor? 243 performance but in a better wrapper.
Posted By: deflave Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/11/14
I'm only hesitant because of components. I'm really sick of playing with new cartridges but something is telling me the Creedmoor would be ideal.

About a 20" barrel. Shooting 105's with a can. Just seems to make sense.

Just build a 243. It's the 223 of the 6mm world. Fine performance. Works well in a short action. You won't worry about losing brass or finding new brass in either super spendy or cheap throwaway configuration. Or I dare say it, buy factory ammo for the brass. Even neck down your 7mm-08 when times are tough.

Which would be a fine idea. Especially since the 162 Amax is going back into production.
Posted By: dogcatcher223 Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/11/14
I would use the 150gr Accubond Longrange in the 7.08, a solid BC of .611 and faster velocity. The 7.08 is a dog with 162's.

Ask Pat, he will agree with me. RL 17 sux. Very temp sensitive.
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/12/14
Sendero Man, what kind of velocity loss did you see compared to temperature change?
Posted By: Sendero_man Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/12/14
Only lost about 45 fps changing to h4350. And haven't seen more than 16 fps swing.

But running RL 17, I saw over 250 fps temp swings from summer to winter and if I remember right, Pat saw even more

H4350 runs in the 6mms !
Posted By: SamOlson Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/12/14
Thanks, I remember Pat posting a couple years ago that R17 fizzled when it got real cold.

Maybe some lots are more temp sensitive than others?

I tested both H4350 and R17 this past December.

H4350 lost about 100fps(243 Win) and R17 lost about 200fps(300 WSM).

(going from -20F rifles/ammo to warmed up rifles and 125F ammo that I heated on the defrost)

10F-80F there isn't much of an issue/velocity loss but obviously losing 100-200fps is going to really screw up cold weather LR shooting.

Hijack over.

Pat, that setup could really be handy for dog hunting around here!

I'm liking this rifle more every time I shoot it. After 165 rounds through the tube, I've added a little more H4350 to increase the velocity 60fps, and it seems to be getting tighter and tighter.

That last load I worked up is 3070fps. I'm happy with that with a 22" barrel. My other bolt rifle in 6 Creed gets 3100fps with .2grs less powder from a 26" barrel.

You can drive the same bullets a bit faster with a standard .243, but in my opinion, the Creedmoor case is a better design for short actions and shooting longer bullets.

Load development is complete...to my pleasant suprise, as the round count approached 200, my velocity had increased almost 80fps. My last 6MM Bartlein barrel did the same thing after a couple hundred rounds and has maintained the same velocity with 1800 rounds downrange. Both rifles are getting 3100fps with 105gr Hybrids. Happy to be able to use the same dope for both rifles.

Card on the mag is meters/mils, with a 180 meter zero.
Posted By: Ackleyfan Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/16/14
Pat I wonder if its a 5R trait or maybe the way the throat was cut that gives the higher velocity after breakin....
Posted By: scenarshooter Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/16/14
You could be on to something with the 5R....

I skipped the barrel break in routine, per usual, but ran a couple patches through it after 100 rounds or so. There was zero copper, and the powder came out after five or six patches. I don't spend much $ on barrel cleaning supplies.....grin!

Nice! Both chambers cut with the same reamer? Nice to be able to swap brass around as well without FL'ing or bumping shoulders.

I have a 6mm 8twist tube that is soon to be installed. The Creed sounds great, but I already have a bunch of 243 lapua brass.

Are you happy with the 22" barrel in conjunction with the can? Or would you go a little shorter when you re-barrel?

Travis
Posted By: MadMooner Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/17/14
I've heard shorter is better when conjuncting with a can.

Huh?
Posted By: cumminscowboy Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/17/14
RL 17 sucked for me, I thought I had a great load 3/4" at 200 yards, I went to test it at 575 yards and that "great load" turned into over 5" of vertical even worse is it was either 1 high and 2 low or the other way around. Basically a miss everytime on a coyote at that range. switched to 4831 sc and vertical went to less than 2" and sometimes as little as .75 accuracy went up to sub .5 at 200 yards. I saw pretty big swings in temp sensitivity as well It was nothing to see 100 fps
Posted By: rcamuglia Re: Quiet....Please!!! - 04/17/14

One of the deputies on my shift had a Ruger 10-22 with an integral suppressor. All you could hear was the bolt cycling. I would have loved to have had the money to get one, but the wife and I and my kids had developed a nasty habit of eating regularly. Food or rifle...food or rifle...food or rifle...? It was touch and go for a while there but I decided we should stick with the food.

Good idea to place the card on the mag.
Card appears to be in .1 mils, correct?

Nice gear.

Well deerstalker, I guess I find myself out of the loop again we allways called them jugs not cans and they aren't very quiet ,cause a lot of heavy noisy breathing. Not that I don't enjoy the photo as art work but we don't get Pat here enough so let's not trash out his thread with T & A when he is willing to part with his pics and knowledge of cutting edge shooting. Nice rifle Pat. Nice shooting too.
I'm thinking of either a 6 creed or the 6.5 creed.

6 is taking the lead after this. I'll be running my .30 cal can on mine.

Any idea how the 6 and the 6.5 compare on barrel life....got a 6.5 in hand and the parts are ready for GAP but a high BC 6mm bullet at 3075fps must be a thing of beauty.

Great thread...one of these years I need to come shoot with you guys.
