Good day.

Would a 6.5 WSM not be a great round in the WSM line up? Is it too close to a 6.5 284 to make any sense?

I am thinking it would be a pretty interesting build with lots of potential. Might have been a great seller in the US if you could buy locally made Win or Rem brass.

I like mine. It's built on a Kimber Montana, which takes advantage of a rifle built around the WSM case. That was the attraction for me. Plus, I already had a 7 WSM, more of an all-around cartridge IMO.

First question I always ask myself is how far do I want to kill something and how much down range velocity do I need to open up the bullet.

Do I need the extra speed that the WSM case provides over the 6.5x284?
With that comes more recoil and harder on the throat.

I would prefer the SAUM case.

That's a good way to look at it. Truth be known, I'd much rather shoot the .260.

As far as the SAUM case, the advantage of the 6.5 WSM is that .270 and .300 WSM brass is readily available, and you don't have to neck turn the cases. And as far as throat erosion, there's no reason you can't load them down if you want. One of my most accurate loads with my old 7 WSM was 160's at just a little faster than 7-08 speeds.

Nope, the 6.5 has smothered the .270's chances.

I like all the 6.5 cals.

For my personal long range rifle, I built a 6.5 Weatherby, Borden Timberline (long) action

for every 6.5 cal, there is someone who ,loves it

you gonna shoot it allot (F-Class) then get a couple barrels for it. If just hunting, close your eyes and throw a dart.

just my .02 to this thread

Yeah, except that if they never made another .270, ten years from now you could count up all the 6.5 sporting rifles ever made, and there'd still be more .270s. Go figger!

Yup, and you could tally up all the votes cast in the last presidential election, and guess who would be president.

That comment on the 6.5's smothering the 270 was a joke, by the way......

I built one about 4 years ago. I put 320 rounds thru it before
trading it away. If you go back about 45 years the 6.5x 300
weatherby was by far the most popular long range cartridge in pa. Today youd be hard pressed to find one. Reason being better
bullets for other cartridges. Driving a 6.5 140 @ 3300 wont make it better than a 30 cal 210 driven @ 3300. And if you if
you dont agree, go watch them fly across a wide valley.

I don't need to watch them fly, I can close my eyes and just feel the recoil to know which one I prefer.

I knew that, having just followed the thread on that subject yesterday, but had to take a poke, just for fun. Kinda like chumming for bluefish.

I'd rather not touch one off at all if you're pushing a 210 at 3300 fps from a .300 Weatherby. I'll leave that to the rifle cradle and 30 ft long string tied to the trigger...

Easily achievable with magnum primers.......

Thanks for the info. Think it would be a pretty nice round to have for long range hunting/shooting. Would love to build one!

6.5RSAUM is an interesting wildcat. GAP is doing a lot on that front.
