And what powder do you like with it in a .243?
I used the berger hunting VLD last year on one mature buck with no complaints. Before that I used the 105 amax a fair amount and it's always worked fine too. I understand that the scenars are a little stouter than either of those two.

7828, H1000 and retumbo have all given me good speed and accuracy

I hope the Hornady 105 BTHP shows up on this list. I've got a bunch but have never used them on deer.

I'll let you know this fall (hopefully) smile
105gr Scenars with RL-17 out of a .243AI
105gr AMax and Retumbo in a straight .243. Works well in all temperatures.

Bob

PS: you'll probably need a drop tube to get the max velocities.

Not necessarily my "favorite", but 243win 105gr Hornady HPBT....

Both quartering away and both shoulder, spine, exit. Neither moved of course.
I am using the berger 105 hybrid. Have shot 2 deer, 1 antelope, and lots of coyotes. The bullet opens well. It's very accurate and easy to load. Not as sensitive to seating depth as vld s. Shooting h 4350 at just under 3000fps in a standard 243.
Formidilosus,

Is that a 20 ounce high tech specialties [Bansner] stock in original blue?

Is that tape on the elevation turret marked with feedback from long range target practice?

... If so I can relate.
Clark,

Yes and yes.
Is that thing on the muzzle in case you fall down?
If so, I an relate.
I've used the 105 vld hunting over H1000 in a standard 243 on deer. It worked well. I'll probably use the 105 amax on my antelope this year.

I use the Berger 105 hunting vld's with RL22 in my 243 likes it real good!!!

I am one kill for one shot with that bullet.
105 vld. I have only shot one hog with it though. Hope to add more critters to the list this year. I have used 95 nbt for a long time with success though. Also want to try the 105 amax
The 105 AM has worked very well on a few WT for me...
Imr 4350
Thanks to all who answered.

What kind of muzzle velocities are you getting (and with what barrel lengths)?
105 VLDs and Retumbo are really the class leaders. grin

Then again the 6mm works pretty well at most any bullet 100 plus or minus grains and reasonable (3000fps + or - )muzzle velocity.

Add a decent BC and you really do have a giant killer. It just plain works.
I'm running a 26" brux 8 twist barrel on my 243. I've ran 105's to almost 3200 but my current load with the 105 amax is running 3080. I originally wanted a 24" barrel but the smith missed that note and went 26". It shot well enough that I didn't want to mess with it after that so left it. My next 243 is coming with a 22" 8 twist.

I've only shot 1 buck with the 105 vld and it seemed to pencil in for 3-4" and then come apart. Some frags exited. Worked just like they say they do and I'd feel ok using one on elk.

I've shot rock chucks at 500 + yards with the 105 amax and had some good splat effect. With the vlds at that range I've had less splat and a few crawl off a ways. I think that first few inches where the vld holds together is why. Although I have had some that splayed good with the vld.

We'll see how the Amax does on antelope in a few months. Then I'd like to try the 105 hornady bthp's and the 105 berger hybrids. I drew and extra whitetail did tag so maybe I'll try one of those on it.

My first rifle was a bdl 6mm and I hunted with it from age 14 until about 24 or 25 almost exclusively. I killed at least 9 deer with it and all pretty much dropped at the shot and it only took one. Back then I used the hornady 105 btsp. After years of playing with bigger rounds I've notice none have really killed much quicker than the old 6mm. I love the old 6mm for sentimental reasons but when I build now I go 243 because it works just as well and fits the mag box better. Brass is also better.

I'm still contemplating a 6-06 build. 23" 8 twist on a 700 LA. Plenty of mag box space, easy to form from several other cartridges, and should feed great with 5 in the mag and no belt. Thinking I could get the 105's close to 3400. I'd go rem standard sporter and a light stock. I don't think the extra few ounces and about ,75" of length from a long action would be a big deal. My fat fingers would load it easier too. Does anyone have a good 6-06 reamers print?

Bb
The .243" 105 Hybrid VLD,despite easily being THE best boolit Berger makes...seriously pales in terminal affects,as compared to the Hornie or Skinner 105' in all their flavors. The Hybrid is zookie, though it'd be a fair to middlin' pitch in a modest length 6BR. I still don't trust it there,so skirt 'em in order to reap the good stuff.

In the SAAMI 243Win '17 will grant reliable splendor, with all of the 105's. Same goes 243AI. I'm in '22 Mode with the 6-284 and 105's at 3300fps++. '22 do nice thangs in 6-06 with same,if only because case capacities are birds of a feather.

For a 6-06 Killing Rifle, the Montucky platform is THE Meeeow. L/a 700 COAL isn't requisite nor close and the Montucky is a great fit there, for arranging mag fed smooches.

23" 1-8" Brux 6-284 with Hornie 105HPBT's at 3300fps++.

Pard's 22" 1-8" Brux SAAMI 243Win in contour dupe, launches '17 fueled 105 'Max at 3096fps ala moly smooches in Lapooey hulls and he crushed a 118-incher 'bout a week ago. He's done been converted. Just sayin'.

Coupla 105 A-Max launched last,pass by Sister.

Exits being a given and gravity yielded a fairly spectacular Blood Trail.

'Nother 105 'Max exit, from early Spring of this year.

'Nother 105 A-Max exit from 10 days or so ago,ala SAAMI 243Win.

The 6mm Rem sucks heavy ass, compared to the 243Win or 243AI,if only because boolits matter more than headstamps. The fhuqking Mouser hull eats up COAL,less adding case capacity and is a serious Goat Fhuqk in comparison. The 6-284 is a shorter case and blows it outta the water.

For a 6-06,I'd go NO other way than a Montucky donor and no longer than 23" in a contour dupe. 6x MQ Fixed Fhuqker would ride in DD's and Hornie 105 HPBT's smooching a magfed arrangement.

Just sayin'.

Hint.

I'm really impressed with the Scenars. Daughter killed this big doe @ 160yds using a .243AI and 105gr Scenar

I have the 6mmBR, 243, and 6mmRem reamers.
I have just built and in testing with a 6mmRem on a 1903 Turk Mauser action. I am having real problems.

[Linked Image]

This 6mmRem group this week was 1" at 50yards... it may not get to hunt.
One of my 6mmBR rifles has done a 0.1" group at 50yards.

I don't think the 6mmRem idea is bad. Just the necked down brass and some other stuff I must be doing wrong.
Please update this thread when you get some more kills. I have a 1-8" twist rock and haven't driven myself from the 95 NBT.
Planning on perforating a few antelope in a couple days with a 105 Berger. I've used that bullet successfully my last 2 trips out there with impressive results.

I've been running the 85 grain HPBT Game Kings in my 6mm Rem T3, at 3340 avg. These little pills have done so well, I have yet to standardize on a larger one.

my favorite 105 for deer, and anything else for that matter, is an M102:

Fire for effect, over....
Just got back from Wyoming, slinging the 105 Berger hunting vld. I won't be using this bullet anymore, as I had one grenade on and antelope doe's shoulder at 100 yards when shot with my 6xc. The shoulder was destroyed, and there was zero further penetration.
Only have experience with one so far, the Hornady HP, and it is a sweet little pill: accurate, easy to push fast (3050 in a 22" Savage 243 with an off-max charge of Hybrid 100V), slick, cheap, and passes the 3-jug test at 100. I won't be shopping around for anything else. That bullet will be chasing after an elk's lungs this year.
Anyone able to report on these yet this season?
My boy shot a doe here at the house at 250 yds prone. 105 hybrids in a 243.through both lungs and the off shoulder.a puddle inside. We have killed enough with it now to say that this is pretty standard for that bullet.

Had similar results this weekend on. Couple pics at a measly 80yds.

I think around 8 bucks (so far) fell this year to the 105 Amax from my 243AI , all killed in mountain hunts. There isn't much I wouldn't use it for, and I'd use it for even the most remote trophy hunt.
Calvin are you shooting shoulders? If not, would you with the Amax? How fast are you launching them?

I've hit them everywhere with the 105. No problems. It's close contact hunting this time of the year, and most shots were under 30yds. 3150 out of a 8 twist 22" pac nor.

I've killed with the berger and scenar also in 105. I have a ton of amax's, so that's what I'm using. Berger is zookie, but works. Scenar was the most accurate.
Thanks man.
105 SP Speer.... grin
We shot a 4 or 5 year old white tail buck yesterday with the105 hybrid. Broadside 100 yds. He went about 20 ft and piled up. The heart and lungs were completely gone. What was left of the bullet in the off side shoulder. Pretty standard.
Bumping this one back up. Anyone have any 105 kills in the books to report on? So far Stick has me on pace to sling 105 bthp with RL 17. Hoping to see some feed back before I buy a bunch of these things.
