I have the parts to build a rifle and was thinking of a short action 6.5X284. I would like to use berger 130 or 140 grain bullets. Here are the parts I have so far.

Stiller Tac30 action
Manners EH3 stock with wyatt 2.95" mag box
Jewell trigger

I want to use a Proof research barrel. The question is wyatt 2.95" mag box long enough for this cartridge.

Why not do a Creedmoor? Seems to be everyone else's answer to the same question.

I have a GAP 6.5 SAUM. After giving some thought I am leaning towards a 7MM08 or 338 federal.

Yeah, if you already have a GAP 6.5 SAUM, a 6.5-284 isn't going to do much for you, IMO.

I wouldn't mind having one of those...

I built my 6.5-284 is on a LA and wouldn't build one on a SA, unless I planned to fit an aftermarket 3" custom box.

The LA option is less expensive than all that, but "all that" can be pretty cool.

IF you wanted to be different, based on your 7mm-08, you could to 284 win on a SA.

One thought, squirrel away a lifetime supply of good brass before you built. If you can't, don't.

If I were to build anything on the 284 case in a short action remington I would install a "bainey" magazine box instead of the standard wyatt extended mag. It allows a catridge length of 3.110. I believe wyatt makes these as well and they are available through pacific tool and gauge and include a nifty follower. Just a thought

3.11 COAL would be good for about anything in the 6.5X284. I have always liked the round.

Yeah, that would be about ideal.

3.11" would work with about any mid-length round with full COAL freedom using heavy bullets.

With the LA, there is wasted space at 3.4". The LA would be less expensive than custom fitting aftermarket parts. But, for the "ideal" set up, one would have to seriourly consider going there. I've seen pictures, never handled one.

Norma is offering 284 brass, you can easily build a 6.5x284 necked up to 7mm. Brass is really no problem for 284. I think bullets.com has the Norma 284. Good luck, got 4 I love.

I have the long action version with a Bartlien barrel. Would a 2.95" round eject from a short action? If so, I see no reason not to the build. My coal on the tac300 with 140 Berger hybrids is around 3.0" and 2.95" for 130s.

I don't understand how reloaders keep the bullet bearing surface fully in the case neck and seat the bullet out much further. I am still learning about reloading and maybe it doesn't matter.

The European counterpart to SAMMI, the CIP, has set the 6.5-284's OAL at 3.228". You may not want a reamer with a throat that long for your short action. You may have to do to some searching for a shorter throated reamer or buy a reamer to your specs.

I agree with Dirtfarmer building a 6.5x284 on a long action, especially with the bullets listed. I went with a LA and have NEVER been a bit sorry for going that way....

I heard that you also like the .257 Roberts on a LA...

I've had 3, 6.5x284s. One each on a SA and LA 700, and one on a Win M70 (SC) SA. By far, the LA 700 version was (is as I still have it) the best of the bunch. Easier to load for, easier feeding, and just plain out shot the other two. All three wore Rock #4, S/S, 8T barrels. The 700 SA and M70 SA versions both made trips down the road.

The 6.5x284, like the 7x57, is a 'tweener - not a short case (.308 Win), not a long case (30-06) and deserves the LA to bring out its best. If you want a 6.5 on a SA, go 6.5 Creed or 6.5x47 Lapua.

Here's a 6.5-284, pre-64 M-70/26" #3 Krieger, in a Boyds Jon Sundra laminate, pillared, glassed free floated and torqued with Jewell and Borden's Bumps. It's a solid half MOA shooter at 500 yds. with Z5 3.5-18x44 BT and Outdoorsmans yardage turret.

Why mess with any of this if you've got a SAUM already? If I abandoned my 6.5 SAUM it would have to be for a x47 or maybe a Creedmoor if I didn't want to bush the bolt. If you want a bigger bullet with less recoil, I'd go 7-08 or 7x47 Lapua.

My new SA 6.5-284 is gonna be a 6.5 Creedmoor...

Got one underway as we speak. I like the way that round is designed for a SA.

24" #2 Shilen SS Match being fitted to an ADL, SA 70's vintage M-700, by an excellent smith. It will go in an HS 24 oz. BDL stock I picked up used here on the Fire Classifieds. ADL has been converted to BDL with used factory parts.

The factory trigger is excellent, won't need replacing. I'll skim bed it and free float the barrel. Should be a nice, light weight rig.

The Creedmoor is a perfect fit in a SA 700.... one sweet cartridge!!

I like the pre-64.....

Because I like the round. I have a stiller SA 308 bolt face I was going to use. I decided to going a different way and am building a 7mm08 off that action with a jewell trigger and proof research barrel. I bought a rem 700 LA barreled action in 6.5X284 last night so that itch has been scratched.

Bought a Ruger American Predator 6.5 Creedmoor $399 for my son, mounted a scope, free floated barrel and adjusted trigger. Giving it to him after he comes home from AK air guard training.

Went to the range with a box of Hornady 120 gr A Max factory load. Group # 3, 5 shot,s went into .43". Hornady has load information for there factory loads! Pretty impressive rifle!


At the same time my Custom LH MRC 6.5 X 284 would not shoot better than 1.3".
