Well, I finally bought one of these

http://www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-700/model-700-long-range

and a SWFA 10X SS arrived yesterday so I hit the range early this morning.
I replaced the factory trigger with a Timney, otherwise it's a stock rifle.

Here's the first target and I'm pretty pleased with it. I'm shooting the 210 Berger VLD Hunting.

The lone bullet hole near the center is the first shot after bore sighting at 100 yards. It was easy to dial in with the SWFA so my first groups were the bottom four groups. Each group was 4 shots.

I'm not sure what happened on the second group. I was probably not behind the gun right. I cleaned the rifle after that group.

So left to right on the bottom was 59,60,61 and 62grs. H4831
Velocity was 2670fps with the 62grs.

The top 2 groups were 59 and 60grs Rel. 22
Velocity for the 60gr load was 2670fps also. I'm sure the Rel. 22 loads would shoot better but these were some left over loads from another rifle and were set way back off the lands.

The bottom groups....my COAL was 3.475 which is about .010 off the lands.

That looks pretty good, I think you have found a couple of good loads.
Yeah, I'm pleased with the rifle for the first time out.
I've loaded for the 30-06 for some years now but mostly 150-180 gr bullets.

I'm not getting any pressure signs so far. I'm thinking about creeping up a grain or two. I'm using Norma brass and loading with a drop tube. With the long throat I'm not compressing any powder yet.
There has been a great sale on these rifles at Cabela's-with the rebate they were under $600. Lot of rifle for that price.
I got a while back, the trigger sucked but we got it down to app. 3.5 pounds. I need a scope like you got.

Your results give me hope.
Looks good.

I was getting 2800 fps with 210 Berger and 208 AMax, over 61 gr RL22, with moly, and a 26" bbl. A few of the other 30-06 shooters from Sniper's Hide were getting the same type of results.

My chamber has a short throat, so your long throat may need a little more powder to get pressure up.

I found best accuracy with RL22, right up at the top end.

Here are some 3-shot groups with the 210 Berger over 60-61gr RL22,

MM, thanks for the pics etc. That's a nice load!

I didn't have any Reloader 22 to try the other day but I should have some by the end of the week and I'll try it and the H4831. This time I'll have the bullets seated out with the R 22 loads.

MM, didn't you cut your barrel down to 22"? How much velocity did you loose? Also what barrel are you shooting?

I'd be interested, some time in the future, maybe, rebarreling to a better barrel with a good chamber. (However, I really haven't compared it , with any loads I'm using in my other rifles yet, may do that next time out)

Also, I was looking at the Hodgdon load data the other day. Looks like the new IMR 4955 might be worth a try. But there's none around here yet.

It's raining here now and the forecast shows rain for the next few days. I'll post more results when I can get out again.
Yes my barrel was originally 26.5", it's a Douglas #7 contour, stainless, 1/10.

When I cut it to 22.5" (24" with brake), my velocity with the 208/61gr RL22 dropped from 2800 to 2740 fps.

Lately I've been loading 54gr RL17 under the 208 AMax, and 215 Berger, for about 2650-2700 fps, depending on the season (temp). Gave up some speed, but the BC still keeps them accurate and hard hitting well past 1000 yards.

I was recently shooting 20" steel at 1480 or so yards. 20-30 mph wind, and holding 2.5-3.5 mils of windage. Did get on target and make a few hits.
Shot the rifle again this morning. I still don't have any Rel. 22 yet but I'm planning on trying it.

I increased the H4831sc, 210 Berg. load but ,,,,hard bolt lift at 64 grains. I'm going to slide back to around 61.5grs for 2600-2650fps.

I also shot some 165 Nos. BT's with 58grs IMR4350,
3.365 was the coal. Not sure how far off the lands but way off. These were loaded for another rifle. Shot one 4 shot group and it went 1 1/4". I just wanted to see how it might shoot a regular old load.

I also tried some 185 Berger Classics. I loaded, (from left to right in the pics) 55,56 and 57grs H4350.

57 grains H4350, 185 Berg. = 2785fps (4 shots over a pro chrono) These were 3.388 COAL, about a .030 jump. I was using Win. cases and a CCI primer on these.

Those last 2 groups were .6 or less.

Anyway, it's a fun rifle. I'm going to do a little more tinkering with the loads and will post back maybe later this summer when I can get it out to a longer range.
Sendero- those are some great groups. I got a LR on sale. I cleaned the barrel. I tried adjusting the trigger . It is still a little heavy. I mounted a 36x with a dot. I measured the chamber for a 175 berger , 3.510 to touch the lands. I expect to shoot it on Saturday. ron
I am getting 3070 fps with 165 AB's & 63 gr RL 22 in my buddie's R700 30-06, 22".
How much does the rifle weigh with scope and rings?
its around 12 lbs.
I have thought about trying one
I don't know how a guy can shoot a gun w/13in LOP or why a gun company would build one. That's only a half inch longer than a youth stock. powdr
The listed LOP is a misprint. It's actually 14"
Been thinking about buying one of them in 300 Win Mag. Can't beat the price.

Be nice to see how it prints out at 200 yds.

BH63
Long range, 300 mag, and only 200 yards?
Shane, what twist is the rifle in the pic?
It's a 1/10 twist. Douglas #7 contour, stainless.
shot my LR 30-06 saturday. all the groups were under an inch. trigger is still a little heavy too.
Yeah, I was undecided about the trigger. I think I got the original trigger down to around 3.5 but it was crisp.

Any idea of velocities ?
Looking good so far!

I sure wish they built those things in 7 Ultra, though...
Shot the '06 a little more this weekend..
Warning!! These loads (and previous posted loads on this thread) are for my rifle are over sammi recommended max. (just a little disclaimer here,,,,Be Safe!!)

I had the barrel cut back to 23".
I chronographed some loads yesterday. Was 72 and overcast, no wind. Most groups were 4 shot groups, and shot over a pro chrono. So FWIW, a small sample.

First I revisited the 185 Berger load.

185 Berger Classic Hunter, COAL 3.388
Win. brass
CCI 200
H 4350

57 grs. 2740fps 1" group ES 28
58 grs. 2798fps 1/2" ES 52
59 grs. 2840fps 1/2" ES 37

Had a WTF moment and thought I made a mistake cutting the barrel because the 57grs. shot so well before. Anyway I thought the 58-59 grs shot well so I settled on 58.5 grs for around 2820fps, went back out this afternoon and it shot well under .75 moa at 200 yards.
High ES though,,,

Shot the 210's again, with Shane's load and right at his velocities... The velocity and "accuracy" came in at the top loads.

Here's a previous load.

210 Berger VLD Hunting, COAL 3.475"
Norma brass
CCI 200

H4831
61.5grs 2600FPS, 1" group

Then I went to Reloader 22
210 Berger, 3.475"
Norma Brass
CCI 200

Rel. 22
60grs 2654fps 2" group ES 50
61grs 2731fps 1" group ES 11
62grs 2765fps 1" group ES 17

So I may be struggling with the 210's. Probably should have started these jammed to begin with but went back out this afternoon with a Lyman hand press and started seating them deeper, using 61 grs.

I was down to my last 3 and seated them to 3.436". Those last 3 changed POI a little and went 1/2". That's just one group though...need to work on that a little more.

What's interesting is the 210 loads shot .3 mils higher, at 100 yards, than the 185's and using a 150 yard zero for the 210's ,the come ups look to be pretty much the same. Windage is dead on.

So , a little more info..it's been raining and flooding here so I haven't been out much. Next time I hope to have some long range results. Especially if I can get the 210 gr. load going.

Another interesting thing is , I was just looking at some pressure testing data done by Daniel Kocur> He did some pressure testing with a 30-06 some years back and posted the results on accurate reloading.

He maxed out with a 180gr Partition and H4350 at 59grs. showing 63,600 psi for 2835fps.

Also max. load for the 200 Partition was 61 grs. Rel. 22, 62,000 psi and 2703fps.

That's some good shooting and some fine groups. I'd love to have one chambered in 25.06 smile
