Lets see your guys sporter weight say up to 9lbs ready to rock long range hunting rigs. Maybe some details on them and what animals you use them on and how far you will stretch their legs. Im in the preplanning stage of another build and am just looking for some inspiration.

GAP Extreme Hunter 6.5 SAUM w/ S&B PMII 10x42. 8.75 lbs as it sits.

Shorter one is another lighter 6.5 SAUM. Bartlein 2b contour 22" barrel. Manners EH-8 stock. 6lbs 15 oz as it sits. Put a VX-6 2-12x42 on it and it's 8.0 lbs even.

A couple... They all shoot well enough to get out to min impact velocity for each- which for none is less than 600 yards.

And there's about 50 others. Just about any normal hunting rifle with the correct scope and bullets can be used quite well way beyond "normal hunting ranges".....

Recent rifle. Never killed anything with a 6.5 of any sort but the cartridge got such rave reviews I figured I'd get one. Not sure what Id use it on but deer and varmints sound like a good idea.

This is a Rem 700 SA with a 25" Benchmark barrel chambered 6.5 Creedmoor; Echols Shrike stock and NF SHV scope with Leopold DD's. Never weighed it.






I wish I had built this one 25 years ago instead of five or so years, when I was younger and doing a lot more hunting because I really like this rifle and cartridge. Gene Simillion custom M70 chambered 7mm Mashburn Super with 24" Krieger barrel. It weighs a shade under 8 pounds as it's seen here. I shoot mostly 162 Amax in it but also use 160 NPT, AB, and Bitterroots.

The OP has had a Mashburn so this won't give him any new ideas...

Aalf, what load are you using in the 6.5? I've got a longer throat on mine and using 136 lapuas and 4451 in it.

My reamer has .123 freebore, which is great for the 123/130 class bullets that I planned for. I shoot 130 VLD's with Varget, .015" in the lands with an OAL of 2.750", at 2820 in a 23" Brux. I went to 2950, but the accuracy wasn't there.

I own one. The thing is a PITA. and they are heavy....but nice at the 500 yard line.

Pretty basic for me with a simple theme of bulletproof on components. Tikka t3, SWFA 3x9 epoxied into a deadnutz base that was epoxied to the action after opening it up for 8x40 screws. I have never had the zero move. I have taken it to 1250 yards on steel but prefer to have a max of 600 in the field. I have stretched it to a little over 700 once on a big pig but it was not something I want to do again. Current load is the 140 Berger at about 2900fps.

That 140 berger at 2900 is wicked good.

This one is about a pound heavier sans bipod than spec'd in the OP, but it works great with a 195 Hybrid at 2900 fps...

hey, you can't kill big critters with a 243! I use the 105 hybrids. Really like them.(on everything.)

The barrel is 23" and with scope it's approximately 9 lbs.

The Brux #3 is a pretty hefty contour and the bottom metal is all steel.

Since it's a mid to long range rig the extra heft is ok.

Couple of 7 mags. Not super light but they both get the job done.

It will put 3 100 grain SGK's into 1/2" at 100 yards pretty much any time you ask it to. Mainly it is my coyote calling rifle but it does get pressed into service as a deer rifle occasionally. It does really well with an 87 grain VMAX too.

805, what's your load? That is some impressive speed with 105s.

I'm running IMR7828, Lapua brass and Fed210M. Can't remember how many grains off the top of my head. My chamber is throated long and I'm running a wyatts box.

Elk at 440 yds is the only animal I've shot with it.

This is my go to hunting rifle. The 300 RUM loaded with 168gr TTSX @ 3340fps. It has proven a very capable load maintaing MOA accuracy out to 600 yards regularly. It has proven itself on bears, bou, and moose. It has been used in my top two long range shots, both on caribou. I shot a large bull at 519 yards a few years ago and made a 657 yard follow up shot to drop a wounded bull a few weeks ago.

It's stock other than the barrel and paint job. Trigger is set LIGHT. Scope is a Nightforce 3-10x42 SHV in Talley extensions.

This is my upcoming one. It'll be a little heavier... basically I'm cloning the GAP Xtreme Hunter. I'm calling it the fauXtreme <g>. So far I have the action, which is now trued, PTG 1-piece bolt, PTG M16 extractor and bolt guts, the APA RTG bottom metal for the detachable mags.... and the Bartlein #3 and Manners SL are ordered. Made that bolt knob in a bored moment, but we'll see if it's a keeper once I get the stock.

It's gonna be a 6.5 SAUM, aka 6.5 GAP 4S. Scope will be a Bushy LRHS or a NF NXS 3-15.

Yeah it might be a bit big <g>. We'll see. I can always make it smaller. I actually DID make a normal-sized one out of stainless, too.

Combining tapers and radiuses will mess with your head on a manual lathe... mine anyway.

If you aren't working to a spec, I find shaping convex surfaces on a lathe much easier using a file and then varying grades of emory cloth to clean up. Rough to shape with the tool bit and then go to town. A half round file can be made to work on concave surfaces, but this is really were a ground form tool will shine.

Files are amazing tools with a lathe. People would be shocked how effective and precise they can be.

However..... grin.... I made a pretty bitchin' radius-turner for my big lathe. I need it for a product I make. So when there's a radius to be cut I always try to use the damn thing.

Montana 280AI. Leupold 3.5-10 with M1 elevation. I have mostly shot the 162 Amax in it. Longest shot on an animal with it is 567, and I don't really wish to shoot anything farther than that.

Used for sheep, goats, caribou, whatever. Seems like overkill for deer but I guess it could work.

Remington action from their custom shop, Brown precision stock barrel is a 26" Dan Lilja. Dennis Olsen put it together and chambered it to match the mag length. 7mm Remington mag. Shoots swift sirrocco 150 grain well under an inch. I have killed antelope, deer and about 18 elk with it. Farthest antelope was 785 farthest elk was 665. Scope is a 4.5x14 leupold with an elevation turret.

T3 .300WM in a McMillan Sako Hunter.
Fixed 10x Mil/Mil SWFA in Talleys.

Zeroed 1 Mil high @ 100, puts it dead on at about 320, and allows me to just use the reticle for holdovers all the way out just past 1K, though I won't take a shot that far on a big game animal with a sporter rig.

Last week while validating my comeups, at just past 600, it put all three into about a 2&3/4" spot on the rock:

This one actually got blooded last year. As it ended up, it was a closer range (300 yards) shot, that could have easily been handled with my standard .308, but the elk had been staying in the wide open, so I had anticipated a much longer shot.



I will try again in a couple weeks when my cow hunt starts.

Nosler M48 Liberty 300 wsm, 24in barrel. VX5hd 3-15x44 b&c reticle, talleys, harris bipod. 8.5 lbs w/o bipod, around 9.25 with. Only 30 rounds through it since purchase few weeks back, but so far I'm very happy. Balances really well and I hope to become proficient with it out to 700-1000 yards.

Awesome sporter weight long range rigs here. Great thread. Now I miss my winchester model 70 classic stainless 7mm rem mag that was set up for long range. The last buck shot with that one was lasered at 648 yards. I've recently been playing around with a Tikka t3 superlite to take that rifles place. I've also recently bought a 7mm WSM to play around with. Both rifles will be shooting the Hornady 162gr. ELD-X. However, since I haven't had enough time to play with these new 7mm magnums, I would grab for my 338wm built on an H&H pre 64 model 70 receiver. It sports a 24" gretan stainless barrel and shoots pretty good. Heres how she does at close range (100 yards):




She weighs in at 8 pounds even.
