hello everybody,

Long time lurker, new poster here and Im looking to upgrade my "long range" rifle. Right now I have a Remington 700 SPS tactical in 308 that I put into s MCmillan stock, added a Timney trigger, Badger bottom metal and put a vortex PST on it. I built this rifle around 8 years ago and I'm ready to upgrade to something nicer and in a larger caliber like 300wm.

Id actually like to get into longer range hunting as Ive used my other rifle to shoot well out to 600-700yds. Im looking for a "turn key" option meaning I want to get a rifle, put a good scope on it, then buy a few boxes of ammo and find what the rifle likes and keep it simple.

Because of where I live, a custom just Isnt something Im trying to mess with because I live in a remote area, I cant be dealing with all sorts of trips into Anchorage and all that [bleep].

Im looking at the CZ Sonoran or the Christensen ELR.

Does anybody here have any experience with these or have any suggestion for similar rifles at a similar price? Ive got ~3500.00 +/- to spend.

thanks!!!

Another option would be the CZ ultimate hunter or something like a Christensen Ridgeline.

Thanks again.

Most factory rifles shoot as well as custom rifles did in past years. Buy the rifle you like, put a scope on it, go hunting.

In that price range you could go for a semi custom from Hill Country Rifles or some of the other guys who do full custom but keep a bunch of stock on hand. 1/2 MOA guarantees on most of their guns.

Thanks!!! do you think semi custom is as good or better than something like a Sonoran or an ELR?

Dude that's enough for a GAP.

You could also do a Fierce Fury in a 300 Win Mag with NightForce NX 3-15X50mm or Leupold VX6 3-18X44CDS.

You are good to go right there.

Just my two cents, I think quality factory rifles(M700s, Vanguards, etc.)with after market custom triggers than can be safely set to about 2 lbs., in a good stock properly bedded, will have accuracy potential as good as a lapped expensive rifle or custom barrel.

The difference is the lapped barrels will not foul as much.

Don't be too surprised if a new Sonoran is no more accurate than your current SPS.

But it is fun to have a fresh rifle to experiment with.
Enjoy

Good point on the accuracy, my 700 makes tight groups. I guess the main thing is to get a new gun (thats always fun) and a more powerful cartridge.

Thanks for the info on the lapping, Ive been trying to read more and more about it. Sounds sort of strange but Ive been hunting for ~ 25 years (37yo now) and never really paid much attention to that sort of stuff.

GAP rifles are really sweet, my 3500 dollar budget needs to cover a scope too, the only scope I have laying around is a spare VX3i.
