If kept oiled is it a durable finish?

Yep, pretty durable with a little care. I have some that's 125 yrs old and still looking pretty sharp.

Rust blue is extremely durable and gets better with age

Thanks, was looking at an old "gray rat" pistol and thought if I got it could have it rust blued and give it some character.

Not sure how much it costs.

DIY, not hard to due, but it's a bit time consuming.

I find the metal prep the most labor intensive. Draw filing if necessary, polishing/sanding, etc. The actual process of rust bluing is very little actual work just takes time and planning.

Nothing better for a wood stocked rifle in my opinion. My old Featherweight Mod. 70 in 30-06 is still looking good and was made in 1958. It is expensive to have someone do it though, but done properly looks great. A guy with in 10 minutes of my house does it and quoted me 400 bucks to do a rifle!
