I see your scales, but to others following your lead, whose rifle is not sitting on a scale in a pic, add the weight, which I feel is one of the most important of specs.
BTW, great idea!!! I'll see what I can round up.
I get lots of questions about the Bumblebee

One Hole Gunworks.
Lilja #4, 1" shank, 22" 1-in-10 twist
Rick,
When you say 1" shank, is that measured from the face of the action to the start of the barrel radius, face of the recoil lug to start of the barrel radius, or does it include the threads to the start of the barrel radius?
GB
This picture is for all those that have inquired about Howa actions. The stainless steel is a standard Howa 1500, the blued is the Lightweight 1500.
The lightweight has the metal removed from both sides of the receiver from the azz end to the beginning of the front ring. You can see how the receiver has an angled look (I hate to say it, but ala A-bolt).
The other difference is the hollowed out bolt knob
Can't tell you how much weight this saves, can't imagine much more than a few ounces, but there it is for future reference.
The S/S will be another 223AI, the blued I have no idea yet.
Highly successful 1000 Yd BR "Light Class" Rig:
- 300 WSM, 220 grain Sierra Matchkings
- Stiller Python Action
- Benchmark barrel, 1.35" diax 3" shank with a straight taper to .890" at 30.5", 3-groove, 1x11 twist

- Shehane "Tracker" stock in the African Obeche Wood laminate
- Stiller rings with 20 MOA taper
- Nightforce 8-32x56 DD BR scope
- Weight: 15 lbs 2 Oz
Praire dog shooter, go back and add the weight if you got it.
All,
Feel free to add what you like about your rifle and what you would change if any. Maybe what role you see the rifle filling ie. mountain rifle, all arounder, standard dogzapper walking varmiter format, etc
Great idea

CAS - I'm really liking your taste in guns.
I'm in the works of converting my main hunting stable to a similar config - rifle wise, caliber choice is a bit different.
But I do like your platform and dress....................
Nice start to this area; it was originally the thought that maybe questions and compliments could be sent via PM or started as another thread. I'm sure most of these rigs could be the subject of a thread, and they definitely warrant compliments.
Just a though, but if we keep it limited to blueprints and photos, this will be a great resource.
BTW, I realize I just violated this principle! Thanks again for the contributions.

I have experience with 3 coatings (Cerakote, KG GunKote, Lauer's Durakote)
KG Gunkote has been around the longest of the 3 and is available in 4 different formulas for firearms. It has undergone several reformulations/improvements over the years and like any coating will peel, flake or chip especially if not prepped correctly. I think KG GunKote has received some bad press due to improper prepwork, early formulations etc.
I either parkerize or use KG's pretreatment: K Phos and have never experienced what I consider unacceptable performance (and I work my rifles hard - mtn pack trips)
KG just shipped me some 2400 series GunKote that I will be using on the next 5 rifles I am currently building. This stuff will definitely get a workout.
My thoughts on Cerakote? Excellent product, very rugged but short shelf life in the bottle, expensive and for some a challenge to mix (judging by my PMs).
Is Cerakote better than KG GunKote? Maybe but not that much better if KG GunKote is properly applied. The new KG Gunkote may be just as tough, maybe even tougher in some aspects. I have seen Cerakote chip and scratch too on some firearms.

MH,
I must have gotten a bunch of bad batches from KG then. I prep EXACTLY as they recommend, use K-Phos, and bake as they recommend. I have never had one single batch that would hold up as well, or was as hard as Cerakote.
I will try and find some pics of a test I did coating a couple bolts with Cerakote and a couple botls with KG, then comparing durability. Cerakote won by a mile.
I also have not noticed that Cerakote has a short shelf life compared to KG. In fact, all of the KG products save the gloss products use a flattenign paste in them that settles to the bottom rather quickly. If you leave it there for any length of time (much over a month), you really need to take the can to a professional paint shop and have them shake it up with one of their vibrators to ensure no clumping and consistent flatness.
I've not tried the newest KG stuff, but given my experience with their other products, I'm not too interested.
Duracoat is pretty darn good too, though it has an entirely different feel and hardness than Cerakote.
My thoughts are KG Gunkote does not reach its full cure when it is brought out of the oven. Ditto for Duracoat. Some folks say it really reaches that ceramic hardness a year later. I dunno, I always bake KG GunKote an extra hour or so. Joe Fazio said it does not hurt a thing.........
I might add my experience is only with the KG GunKote 2400 series.

Lessons learned: For other newbies, make sure you do your homework and push back is something doesn't sound right. I was not after a light rifle to begin with (just wanted a pleasant shooter that would steady nice). I specified that the rifle was to weigh no more than 7.5 pounds clean (it was on the order sheet, typed by George himself), it came in at closer to 8. I voiced my concern with George during the spec'ing of this rifle that I thought the #4 Rock at 24" would come in heavy. He was quick to say that the weights displayed on Rock's website were only rough estimates and to trust him. In addition, I requested a 2.5 lb. trigger pull. not a 3 lb. as it turned out. I can live with the trigger and don't feel like debating this with George after a 6 month wait. BTW, the McMillan flame did not turn out even remotely like a flame.
Having said all that, I can't wait to take it hunting next season. I might ultimately have the barrel fluted if I get tired of the weight (assuming I can have this #4 fluted). I wanted 24" vs. 22" for maybe a little more velocity, but most would probably argue 22" would be better. I realize a lighter scope and Talley Lightweights would also bring it down.
I'm staying local on the next one - Karl Kampfeld will get my business.
DB,
Still a pretty nice rifle, lots of potential in the weight savings dept.
Flute the barrel like you posted.
Skip the heavy recoil lug and opt for the factory pot metal if you want to save weight next time, maybe go Williams Ti bottom metal if Matt is producing them.
I like Lilja's sporter contours #2- #4 for most of my projects now, very trim but still accurate.

All smithing work was done by Patriot Arms. In hindsight, I would have gone with the adjustable comb HTG or a Manners MCS-T. The front ringmount had to be flipped to get proper eye relief (after this pic was taken) and the stockpack had to be used to get comfortable comb height. I may go to a scope with 40mm obj and try to go down a ringmount height. Still working up loads for 140s and 160s...she's a pussycat to shoot from a bench/rest.

Shoots honest 1" shot groups.
It took a fair bit of work to get the stock to work for a Model 70. The location of the bolt notch and loading port needed to be changed. The grip area needed to be altered to accomodate the longer and flatter Model 70 tang. I also bobbed the forend about 1.5" because it was too long to be in proportion with a 22" barrel. The action screws and the magazine box both needed to be shortened to accommodate the shallower stock. And of course the action bedding area needed to be completely reinletted and filled as needed.
But I prefer the lines of this stock to those that McMillan offer for the Model 70s (the compact excluded), so the project was worth it.

I've looked long and hard for a 600 in 222 at a decent price to make it a 223 - so far no luck. I bought a cheap 700 ADL in 223 to paly with until I find one. All will be in McM MR stocks too! If only the 338RCM could fit into a 600 action, my 338WM may have to find a new home...
FOS, Awesome looking rifles. I especially like the double!

Yes, they do most of my work, great guys to deal with!
I know this post is about a year old but ...
Is there a website or some contact info for this D&D Gunsmithing?
No web site but the number is 248.858.1512
CAS,
First, I like to compliment you on your spectacular collection of rifles - they are all great looking and well thought out.
I have a Reminton Ti, I'd like to customize.
Like probably every rifle extemist who buys a Ti - I'd like to make mine even lighter. I hope you can tell me a few things and help me with some decisions I have to make.
I find the 284 family of wildcats interesting - with my rifle presently being a 7mm-08 would the feed rails need changing? With the 25-284 is the magazine long enough for optimum loading?
Your alloy shroud, pin and spring you changed - was it for lock time - or did it actually lighten your rifle? How does the Brown stock you have compare to a McMillan "Edge" in weight? Is the Shilen trigger lighter? How much weight difference is there between a 1.5 contour barrel and a 1 ?
What is the "closed cell" recoil pad? How much weight does it save? Where can a person get one?
I know I've asked a lot of questions, but if you could, I'd sure like to learn more about what you did, and what I could do with my own rifle to make it unique.
Finally got this one finished:

The rifle in these photos was built on a Remington 700 ADL action with a stainless steel super match grade Pac-Nor barrel that has 3 grooves and a 1 in 9" twist barrel. PT&G built the reamer and it is for a .1945" tight necked chamber. I had my gunsmith add the flutes to the 24" barrel and he did his "thing" on the barrel so it looks like scroll-work on it. He said he used fairly course sandpaper on an orbital sander and spins the barrel at a very slow rate of speed in his mill.
The business end of the barrel:
Here is the rifle set up in an H-S Precision Varminter stock wearing a Sightron II 6.5-20x50mm scope with a duplex reticule. The bipod is a Harris swivel model in 9-13" length with leg notches and I added the Pod-Lock accessory on the bipod.
Here's a photo of the rifle as it looked last summer after I gave it a camo paint job using the Krylon Fusion camo colors. I hand cut some stencils to make the patterns on the stock after giving it a base coat of Krylon Khaki. I have not been able to convince myself to do a camo paint job on the scope, barrel or the action!!
The prairie dog in the photo was very satisfied with the way this rig shoots. The bullets I use are 27.8 gr. BTHP Hammetts and they leave the muzzle at around 4,000 fps with bare bullets. I have begun to use Danzac on my bullets and the velocity has dropped a wee bit. I am still working on finding the magic load with the coated bullets, but I think I'll be able to find a load so the bullets will leave the muzzle at somewhere between 3,900 fps and 4,000 fps.
If you look real close at the barrel, you will see the mirage shield I usually have on the barrel on prairie dog shooting outings. There are many times on hot summer days that the barrel gets so hot just from the sun beating down on it that you can't touch the barrel--even BEFORE you begin shooting bullets down the tube. So, the mirage shield helps fight mirage AND helps keep the sun from beating down on the barrel too.

TVan, great gun, great scope, great group.
I've never seen this type of scope before. Who is the dealer?
Which model did you chose from McMillan and what percentages of which colors?
What is the purpose the gun is made for? Hunting or target shooting?
Elmer,
I bought this scope from someone else who never used it. You can call US Optics and buy direct I believe, (714-582-1956) send questions to
[email protected], website is usoptics.com and there are some sites on the Internet that sell them as well. They are very high end scopes that are primarily used by military & law enforcement snipers. They don't advertise and that is why most people have never heard of them. They are located in Brea, California. This scope with the options on it lists for $2,211.00. They can be custom ordered with many different options from the factory. Of course price is a drawback and they are a heavy scope because they are built to take the heavy punishment they may see in military situations.
The McMillan stock is the Winchester pre 64 Monte Carlo in 80% Forest Green, 10% White & 10% Black.
I built it for primarily hunting coyote's but took a Whitetail buck last fall using Nosler partition 60 grain bullets. The deer dropped instantly. I also have a 100 & 200 yard rifle range on my property that I target shoot on.
Best Regards,
Tom
Geez, TVan, your post threw me for a loop - I'm in the process of building a very similar rifle, and I felt like I was having a premonition...Win M70 stainless action, 22" fluted #5 Rock barrel in 308, McMillan Supergrade swirly stock, USO 1.8-10 low profile scope with EREK. Great minds must think alike! If I ever get all the parts together (currently waiting on the stock and barrel), I'll post some pics.
Gasman,
Your gonna love it. What do you think of the US Optics scope? From your message it sounds like you already have that piece of the puzzle. Pics when you have them would be great....
Love 'em on my "long-range precision rifles". Excellent glass - just spoils you for most anything else. I like that fact that you can customize the reticles and turrets, and the folks at USO are great to deal with. You'll find out...ya can't just buy one!
Gasman,
I know, I am already planing my next custom rifle just so I can buy another USO scope for it. It's a bad habit....

Talley Lightweight rings modified to 8-40, glass bedded to receiver and lapped.
Leupold M8-6X42 matte scope with Premier Reticles #4 reticle. If Leupold ever gets their hunter turrets on the market, I'll have an elevation turret installed.
6 pounds 9 oz all up with Butler Creeks. It balances on the front guard screw. Through 20+ 3-shot groups at 100 yards, it has averaged 0.58" with 140 accubonds. With 150 TSX's at 3060 fps it shoots a bit better than that.
It's my ultimate backpack rifle, I can't think of a single thing that I'd change.

RickF- I like it! Just curious if you weighed the action before/after having it slabbed?
Thanks.
Here's the best advice you'll get all day. Buy a M700 LSS in the caliber you like. Assuming the barrel is a good one, sell the laminated stock. Put the barreled action in an EDGE.
You're within a half pound of this rifle and saved over a thousand bucks.
RickF- I like it! Just curious if you weighed the action before/after having it slabbed?
I can't remember, I had the metal work almost 2 years ago.
It wouldn't have saved more than 3 oz or so, but slabbing at least was cheap, $80 or so. That's why the bolt isn't fluted, for the sake of an ounce I couldn't justify it. More than getting lighter it LOOKS lighter.
Thanks! It surely looks great! Now if I could just talk myself into spending the money on a 3pos wing safety (to match the one on my MKII) I'd be set on a Remington.
Thanks.

This rifle started off as a Charles Daly LEFT HAND
action. I had a buddy of mine put on the Douglas barrel cut to 23" & chamber it for 35 Whelen. I then sent it to Gentry for one of his left hand 3 position safeties. I wrapped it all up along with a great chunk of Turkish walnut that I bought here from Ray Atkinson and took the works to Gary Stiles a gunmaker who loves working on mausers.
Gary Put on a new bolt with a nicer angle then the original. It also has 3 checkered panels. He got rid of the push button magazine release & made a new, in the trigger release that is much cleaner in appearance than the original. He smoothed up the action & made it feed perfectly. I now know what CRF is
supposed to feed like. None of my Winchesters feed this way, they all push the cartridge along for 1/2" before it snaps behind the claw. My mauser goes from the magazine to the claw....no free wheeling at all. Gary added Talley quick release rings & I have a Talley peep sight to use as back up should a scope go bad on a hunt. I also had him install a NECG Banded front sight. For blueing I went with a matte finish.
Garys stock work is truly a work of art. The stock is classic & trim. Checking is 24 LPI in a Fler de Le (sp?) pattern. The inletting looks like it was done with a laser.
I have shot this rifle at the range with some extra boxes of factory ammo I had around. I will be working up some hand loads this spring. It has to be ready for elk season this fall! I will be using 250 grain Nosler Partitions.
The Left Hand Daly action worked better than I could have imagined for a custom. I have another action with Gary now that will eventually be my "mountain rifle". But that rifle is a ways off. For now....I will have to enjoy the whelen.
WJU, Awesome gun. I have the same action(LH also), laying here. Not sure which route I want to go. What does the whole rig weigh? Again, very nice. Tom
The whole thing ready to go, scope & all is just a bit over 8 lbs. To have a left handed mauser is a dream. I am glad that I bought my actions when I did. I will pick any up I run across in the future. They clean up well. This action feeds like a dream & is super slick.
When I first thought of this project I was just goung to get a synthetic or lami stock. Have a quick hunter. But NO ONE offers over the counter stocks for a left hand mauser. McMillian would make one but it was going to run about $600. I thought about it and decided to take advantage of the walnut blanks I had and go for my first full blown custom. I am pleased with the end result.
I hear you about stock selection. Other than McM, MPI also can make one. About the same price though. Glad to hear about the action cleaning up the way it did. I must have worked mine about 500 time so far. Hard to tell if it's better or not but it is still not the smoothest. Still debating on what caliber. A 30-06 makes the most sense to me, but then again lefty 6's are easy to get. Am thinking 280 or 9.3x62. Depends on which day of the week it is. Really was leaning towards the 9.3, but I already have a LH M70 338. A little over lape there. 280 makes the most sense for me, but when does that ever have anything to do with it. A mauser kind of screams for a metric caliber. Tom
I feel your pain! I am torn between a 7x57 & 280 for my second action. it will be built as a light(er) weight mountain rifle. Like a cross between the Winchester Featherweight & the old mauser pattern "B".
I agree about wanting to do something different. You cabn always run across left handed 06s & 270s.
What kind of specs are you looking at for the light rifle? Barrel, stock, etc.?
The barrel will be a custom contour by Gary Stiles. It will be half round & half octagon. It will be made trim, but will not be a flyweight. Looks are important in this project. I am looking for "a lighter" rifle, not really fly weight. Besides, I am starting with a mauser, far from being the lightest action. The barrel will be made like this one that is in the white. It will be cut to 22"
The stock will be done in a similar manor as the picture above. A cross between the mauser pattern B & the Winchester featherweight stock. Schnabel forend & all. Very trim with the same open grip that Gary used on my Whelen.
I am looking at getting the rifle in the 7 lb + range. Plenty easy for me to carry all day.
It will have bottom metal from an old mauser with trim trigger guard & the lever magazine release. Looks great! And it will save a bit of weight.
I will have the same 3 position safety added, along with a new bolt.
My goal is a calassic "mountain rifle" that would look as if it were made 70 years ago. Somthing that I could never find over the counter in a left hand gun.
Sounds like it will be an awesome rifle when done. You'll have most of the bases covered with that set. Wish I would have bought two when I got the one I have. I've considered wood also, but will most likely go with a McM. I have a couple of other rifles that need some attention first so I have pleanty of time to change my mind. Tom
There are a lot of really great looking rifles on here. I figured I would put a few of mine up.
First is a 458 Lott built by Stan Jackson here in Anchorage. Built on a winchester 70 classic action originally a 300 Win mag. 24" douglas barrel with muzzle break and cap so I can take the muzzle break off to hunt with. Accurate innovations stock with full aluminum bedding block. Gold blade sourdough front sight and brockman pop up peep bases with QD talley rings and Leupold 1.5-5 illuminated VXIII, german #4 dot reticle.
I haven't worked up much in the line of heavy loads thru it but have around 250 rounds of 350gr Speer mag tip @ 2760fps. Mild to shoot and very accurate. I have shot several 5 shot groups at 100 yards 1" or less. The pop up peep and sourdough blade dead on at 25 yards and hits a couple inches high at 100 yards. That sourdough blade is very easy to place shots with.
Winchester M70 classic
24" douglas barrel
Leupold VXIII 1.5-5 Illuminated german #4
10.5 lbs with scope.
The second one is a lightweight 375 H&H done on a winchester 70 classic. In its factory configuration with a hogue overmolded stock it was a heavy SOB. After just one trip moose hunting I knew something had to be done about it. I sent it off to Extreme rifle works, out of Palmer alaska. I told him to make it as light as possible. They turned down the factory barrel contour, trimmed all possible metal from the action and the bolt and then bedded it into an ultra light kevlar stock. Cut the barrel back to 20" and installed a tritium bead front and brockman pop up peep rear. I originall had the 1.5-5 leupold VxIII that is now on my lott but have since replaced it with a ziess 3-9x40 conquest. It is one brutal SOB off the bench but is a joy to carry and is my go to gun whenever travel is involved. I'm going to work up a lot for it with the 270gr TSX for this years hunting season.

Thats a Sako Classic, in was inletted by the smith. All work as done by Stu Satterlee. I'm going to take her for a test run this weekend. Bought some 185gr TSX and 210 Noslers. I have 2 more mexs in the works, not sure what they will grow up to be.

This rifle has been a long time in the making, but it's working out pretty well.
The action is a NULA Model 20 with a Douglas #1 22" barrel in 308. The barrel and action are cerakoted. Timney trigger with a three postion safety. 3" magazine box and long throat.
The stock is an MPI microlight kevlar/carbon fiber built by Rick Steinhour. He did a great job and the stock came out great, a hair over 16oz finished. The pistol grip and fore end 'handle' help with shooting a rifle this light off hand (it shoots very well off hand)
The bare rifle weighs 4# 9oz. With Talley 1-piece bases, Leupold 2-7x33 VXII and flip up caps it tips the scales at 5# 6 3/4oz.
It seems like it's going to shoot really well. At this point I've tried Hornady 150 Interlocks, Hornady FMJs and Nosler 150 Etips. All have shot under an inch (the Etip gave me a little trouble, but at least two loads went well under MOA).
How do I find Rick Steinhour? I have a NULA that needs thumbhole stock.

Bad Ass rifle. Nice!!! (along with the trophy it is sitting on). Did you take that with this rifle?
Thanks AHM,
No, the sheep was taken with another rifle, this rifle hasn't been hunted with, yet. The sheep wasn't a planned part of the picture, but I was looking for something in the room on which to prop the rifle and it worked out better than anything else.

mpwolf,
What camo is that?? Looks like GAP camo?? What colors involved??
I love it!!
I don't know what they call it- I bought the stock from SKane here in the classifieds. I'd call it urban camo. I'll try to get some pics in better light this weekend.
More pics would be great - thanks!!
I think urban camo has blue in it somewhere. Maybe where this one is black? Looks great and since it don't have the blue you should be able to kill more stuff- grin.
Both are the pattern with blue and with black are urban camo, actually.
Passport - That is a nice looking rig. Good work!

smy1, I like that new rig! What barrel length did you use?
Also, would you use it on Elk or larger?
Thanks! 26" barrel. I would use it on Elk, but I have a 300 Weatherby and a 338 Win Mag as well. Probably need to post those here someday.
I've got something similar to that last .264 Win Mag, and yes Blargon, I've used mine on elk. She's no safe queen, I actually do take her out hunting.

Very classy build Mr. Ex. Where does it balance with that 27" barrel?
And congrats on breaking it in on some fine animals.
Thanks Yukonal,
She's pretty front heavy, balances around the middle of the forearm. But it helps her swing nicely on running deer like that doe I shot in the Maine woods. Kinda out of her element, she belongs here in Colorado, but I wasn't about to leave her at home for my buddy's first deer hunt.

I've been a member for about a month and just today went through all 17 pages of this thread. All very nice rifles and a lot of variety. Not many Ruger falling blocks so I'll share pics of mine. The first four cartridges in this pic are my wildcats that I shoot in my Rugers, the other two are for TC barrels.
.204 Wasp, .219 Wasp, .219 DW PDK, .224 BRM, 6.5 Bullberry Imp., .30 Herrett
I'll start with my oldest one, built for me in 1994 by Ralph Bond of Bloomington, In. Ruger #3 .219 Wasp, Shilen #7 contour, 14" twist, Kepplinger set trigger, 16X Redfield 6400 scope, French gray finish on action by EABCO, Reinhart-[bleep] walnut, weighs 12 lb.
Target on left was shot in 1994, right target was shot last summer after 5900+ rounds through barrel.
Ruger #3 .224 BRM rebarreled by EABCO in Minn. Caliber is their design, like .219 Wasp made .300 longer. Chamber is too long to use 30-30 brass so I necked down 38-55 WW brass. Kepplinger set trigger, Leupold 6.5-20 X 40 mildot, Vais brake. #1 Ruger wood.
Only weighs 10 lb. 4 oz., but PD hits are easy to see with the brake.
left target is one of the best groups from rifle with 50 v-max, right target is what I have loaded for May 09 with 55 NBT's.
Ruger #1 .219 DW PDK, built by Mark Penrod in 07, Shilen #7 contour, select match SS, 14" twist, Kepplinger set trigger
20 oz. unset, 12 oz. set, 8-32 X 50 Pentax mildot, JGS reamer ground to my design, 30-30 brass, 1.900 long 35* shoulder, .270 long, .250 dia neck, weighs 12 lb. 4 oz.

.250 long .232 dia neck, 1.770 case length, case holds 32 gr of Varget to base of bullet.

right target is fire forming load load that I shot second trip to the range, 29.5 gr N135, 40 v-max mollied jammed into lands, 4033 fps
I just finished loading 444 more of these and will be fireforming them on PD's in about 5 weeks. Will have all summer to work up loads with formed brass.

Leftybolt
Leftybolt,
Very nice rifle! What does it weigh?
leftybolt,
That is a nice one! Congrat's!
Thanks guys.
Leomort, Honestly I have no idea what it weighs. The stock has McMillan's standard fill; I'm guessing with scope & mounted it's probably around 8lbs, just guessing though.
I'm not big on super-lites. I'll say this much though, its significantly lighter than the factory Win 70 was originally. And, it balances much better too. That Echol's Legend stock is the bomb!
Looking forward to getting it dialed in.
Leftybolt
Leomort,
After comparing it to my other McMillan stocked rifles I'm guessing its a bit lighter in weight than I had previously thought.
I'm thinking its probably closer to 71/2 lbs with scope and mounts. Plenty lite for me.
Leftybolt
leftybolt,
yea, I was thinking with a one contour barrel that it would have to weigh less than 8lbs, as my 270Win with factory Rem barrel in Mcillan Classic stock and Leupie 3.5-10x40mm weighs in at 8 lbs on the nose. That 7.5lbs would seem pretty light

Blueprinting? I am not sure if I fully understand the term, but I am going to take it to mean Gun Porn. So here are two of my most revcent buys/faves:
Postwar Mauser - this was built for an occupation forces GI:
When my other gun comes back from the 'Smitty/gun-fixer, I am going to hand him this one, and I will have him add a Peep Sight I bought fro a fellow board member. I had originally intended to buy a side scope mount, but the drop on this stock is such that it balances like a fine shotgun...no need to mess that up. It is in 8 Mauser, and at 50yds the tiny open sights and my bifocular eyes put groups in the 2" range. I be the addition of the Peep plus a white bead front and she will really tighten up/perfect for the woods of SC

to which one are you referring, exactly?
use the "quote" or "quick quote" buttons next time if you're not responding to the final post in the thread.
That's just the angle of the camera/photo.
Notice how the flat of the octagon barrel at the top of the photo seems to be wider than the bottom one?
That's also part of the illusion created by the camera angle.
If the camera were top-dead-center over the barrel, you could see that the gap on both sides is the same.
That Mauser looks a lot like mine. Only Mine says Taconic on it.
That Mauser looks a lot like mine. Only Mine says Taconic on it.
They're exactly the same. Satterlee worked for Taconic and bought out the inventory, design, etc... after Taconic went under.
Yes, I was aware of this.

LH Model 70
7 mm Rem Mag, long throated specifically for 168 gr Berger VLDs
Port opened, extractor and boltstop modified for longer cartridges.
Brux 1-9 twist CM barrel, 24", custom contour of my design--about .55" at muzzle. (Mark Penrod did the chambering, action mods and bluing.)
Tang recut to cloverleaf, built up and checkered bolt release; (James Anderson did this work.)
Williams floorplate, somewhat resculpted.
McMillan/Echols Legend in Edge construction

Minox ZA5 3-15x

Thanks.
Wow, very nice. Love the lines of the stock.
They are part of the reason I like the Legend hands down over any other McMillan for a Winchester. The only other McMillan pattern I am using is the Compact for light/short barrel contours (which don't match up well with forend of the Legend.)

Nice! How do you like the action?
I could like having 4 or 5 more:) They sure are smooth and for a lightweight build are about perfect IMHO.
That's a really sweet looking rifle you got there!
I glanced at the Borden page to see if that Alpine action suited my view of a hunting gun.
I noticed that its push feed only.
And then this: "
Silver brazed on Remington Bolt Handle ."
I lost interest then.
to bad you will be missing out on a very nice custom action and i bet you would have to beat the handle off with a hammer to get it to loosen up.

Is that a Model Seven clone action? Rock #3?
Love the blueprint!
It is a Defiance sheep action which is basically a model 7 blueprint. The barrel is a "mountain" contour.
The link to Dana's site will give you more specific details. It definitely has a great feel and balance in the 260 rem...
does it shoot as good as it looks?

There are only a couple of rifles that I have built that are absolutely perfect in terms of their intended use, and this is one of them. Usually I wish that the balance, or weight, or some little feature was different. The weight is right at 10# ready to rock, which is spot on for this caliber.
I'm finally about done with my 14 year old sons 7x57..just in time as we leave for our colorado elk hunt next week and the boy needs a little trigger time.
I only had 4 handloads sitting around so after getting it on paper pictured is the first 3 shot group. At 7/8" I think it's showing a bit of promise.

This is the newest build off of my old Model 70 Classic that I had rechambered in 7mm STW (I shot the barrel out).
This one is also 7mm STW. Model 70 Classic action trued and blueprinted. Obermeyer 5R barrel at 1:8.75 twist. I have been a member for maybe three weeks and still have yet to post up something. I am wondering how the owners of these lovely rifles get such good pictures of the guns. How do you get the whole thing in and have it be of good size such that we ain't looking at little more than a stick against a grass background? Is there an optimum distance from which to stand and an optimum angle from which to photograph from that distance? Can we post up more than one picture? Thanks.
Got a response today to an email sent to Lilja, yesterday. The barrel for my .358 Sierra Stomper mildcat will be ready to ship about February 22. Ship it straight to my gunsmith, and I expect to go get it in the first week to ten days of March 2013. Reamer, forming dies and reloading dies should be ready around that time, too. Have been half-forming brass for the round for a month or so. The Stomper uses much of the same case geometry as my functioning 300NDM mildcat, so I can get the brass somewhat down the road to save a bit of time once the stuff to have it all come together finally gets here. All I need to do now is order the recoil lug and muzzle brake. Will have to wait until Spring to have Lee Precision make a Factory Crimp Die for me. They're swamped, right now, with making stuff for the coming selling season...
My creation:
.308-caliber Hart barrel. About 27 or 28 inches long to muzzle, proper. Six lands and grooves. 1:10 in a righthand twist. Stainless, o' course. Custom contour. Six flutes. Shrewd Number Four muzzle brake hollowed out by gunsmith to make gases escape faster, thus softening recoil. Free-floated from just in front of receiver mouth.
Montana Rifle Company Model M1999, 2004 vintage from charter run. Long-action magnum. Left-handed. Stainless, o' course. Massaged to make feeding slicker than snot on a hoe handle. Put into service as a 300WSM in October 2005. Fed
beyond poorly. My fault: I just
had to have the 300WSM. Totally enamored of it, I was. Just stupid, I guess. And ignorant about rifles, cartridges, reloading, long actions versus short actions, controlled-round feeding versus push-feeding, et cetera.
Richards Micro-fit Thumbhole Target stock. Two recoil reducers in buttstock: One is left-handed Hiram's Dead Mule (no longer made); other is a five-ounce mercury unit. Stock required
extensive (about $2300 worth) handwork by gunsmith Robert C. Sutton of Tussey Custom in Moundhouse, NV. That was back in 2005.
Don't choose a Richards. There are many other alternatives that are far, far less expensive to bring to fruition. Pachmayr Presentation buttpad.
Millett LRS-1 scope. Side-focus. 35mm maintube. 6-25X x 56mm. 140 moa of elevation. Too-high rings. Medium set comin' in the mail o/a January 10. Scope base by Near Manufacturing. Made in Canada. Left-handed. 25moa slope.
VERY difficult to acquire. Near makes 100:1 in righty over lefty. $175 each. Stainless, o' course...
Chambered in my
de novo mildcat, the 300 Nevada Desert Magnum. 76.8 grains of water to bottom of neck; about 86.0-86.5 to mouth. Original design. Reamer and headspace gauges by Dave Manson; reamer ground to have .002" total clearance around the neck. Forming and reloading dies designed by Ben Syring at Hornady Manufacturing Company. Factory Crimp Die by Lee Precision. Various little tools and trimmer mandrels by Lee Precision (custom stuff).
Parent case is the 375Ruger Basic brass cold-formed to 2.494 inches long. No fire-forming required. Neck is .386 inches long by .336 inches in diameter; 17-degree shoulder angle; shoulder at 1.832 inches from head and shoulder diameter of .510 inches. Basically, a .30-06 Springsteen on a magnum case. Verified by my blue Chrony to deliver 3000 fps using 68 grains of H4831SC under the 180-grain Sierra MatchKing. Too hot: Showed "piecrust" ridges on primer. Now using slower powders.
Other bullets to be used are several between 150-grain FMJ to 220-grain round-nose by Hornady and Sierra. Doing load work-ups for two or three target and like number of hunting bullets. Powders under consideration are H1000, Retumbo, RL-25, IMR7828SSC and MagPro. Load development is an ongoing exercise as of November 2012. No definite loads yet exist.
As you see it here, the rifle was 'smithed by Bradly Hunt of Alkali International Corporation in Winnemucca, NV. Mildcat first dreamed-up July 25, 2008. First round fired July 15, 2012 after many, many changes. Just a red hair under four years. Total cost in this boondoggle: About $8,000. Yes. But remember, that's the total in essentially
two rifles-- one of which is a mildcat. Doing-up your own round ain't cheap...
Weighs right around nineteen pounds. Ain't for carrying. You carry it from the car to the bench in its custom-made, $375, 25-pound aluminum case. It was 55" long in its first incarnation. Needed the custom case; nothing commercially-made that long. 52" long now.
Got maybe 250-300 rounds through it (I don't count 'em). Prints very, very small groups if I can hold my liquor and keep my sanity. Best is a five-shot at 0.136 inches. Most are quarter-minute to half-minute (when I'm sloppy or yip the shot) from 100 yards. Does well if I do well. Goal is to print half-inch groups at 600 yards and maybe get it inside one-minute at 1000 yards. Lotsa work to do until we see that...
My dad made the adjustable sandbag. Goes way up. Caldwell sissy bag bungeed to a platform that adjusts up and down on six-inch carriage bolts. Locks with thumbscrews. Little piece of quarter-inch ply on right side is for a line level. I prefer this to my hexpensive Sinclair machine rest. Shot the .136" group from this rest. Slide leg to left or to right to adjust for windage. You'll get plenty...

Eric
Did you gents know there is a free software out there that allows for a very accurate measuring of group sizes? It's called OnTarget. You scan your target, name it and then follow the fairly easy-to-use directions to get group sizes right down to .001" levels. You can also take a picture of the group, save it and go from there. Most important thing is to scale the scan or photograph. This will make the circles the same size as the bullet holes. Here's an example of what I produced using the rifle described in my above post:
Note the average center-to-center distance is 0.200 inches from 100 yards. Not bad for a no-talent greenhorn. The longer the reference line, the more accurate the group size is calculated to be by the software. OnTarget ain't hard to use; just takes a bit of fooling with it to figger it out...

Barrel is a takeoff target barrel that did not make weight. Sent it to Twisted Barrel for fluting; they did a fine job and were quick. 28" and 8 twist.
Redneck did the chambering and installed the Jewell trigger, and as always was a joy to work with. Quick, thorough, good communication.
The stock was a RH Laredo stock I had sitting around that needed a paint job. An outfit I had not used before in Salt Lake City (Liquid Innovations) did the hydrodip. Took them less than a month.
It weighs 9# 6 oz w/out a scope, it will come in about 11 ready to roll. Need to find a 20 MOA rail before the snow melts.

barrel length and shank length/lug please? Looks great well done!
22" barrel with 1" shank. Love the rifle as is, but I may have split the difference with the barrel length at 23" if doing it over. I wonder why I have any other rifles after shooting it.
Bob Green does excellent work.......
While not a full custom, here's a Stainless LH Model 70 I recently acquired and did some customizing to. I think it turned out pretty nice.
Work I did to it:
New custom Mauser-style bolt handle buildup and bolt release lever(by Mark Penrod)
Cut and re-crown barrel to 24", and whole barreled action bead-blasted to look factory fresh(by "Redneck")
PT&G steel bottom metal Cerakoted "Satin mag" to match stainless steel(by Eddie Fosnaugh). Still need to have Eddie Cerakote the Talley mounts in graphite black.
McMillan Win 70 FWT pattern in Black w/Gray speckletone paint
Glass bedding/floated barrel(did myself)
Cal: 7mm Rem Mag
Sorry for the crappy cell-phone pics.
Should be good medicine for Mulies/Elk on cross-canyon shots with handloaded 160gr Accubonds or 140gr T-TSX at 3,000 and 3,100 fps respectively.

Walking rifle in .375H&H, Legend Stock, Christianson metalwork, Hill Country Rifles and Kampfeld Custom finishing work.
- Started as a new Winchester 70 Alaskan
- Legend stock in standard fill
- Lee Christianson replaced the factory barrel with a #3 Pac-Nor SS 5groove barrel cut to 23.25, profiling the barrel to fit the stock, did a little work on the trigger and other forms of dark arts.
- Hill Country Rifles did the stock work, installing crossbolts, inletting, pillar bedding, jeweling the bolt, etc. Finished in Cerakote Graphite Black
McMillan painted olive with black speckle.
Unfortunately, I took a long journey down a rockface in Idaho (note: never go down unscouted avalanche chutes); so the barrelled action went right back to Kampfeld Custom who was there in N. Idaho. Karl buffed out the scratches and refinished in Graphite Black. McMillan repainted the stock in its original colors.
Here’s the final product:
With a 2.5x8 Leopold B&C (with the Timney rings champfered slightly to fit the scope), weight is right at 8.5 lbs.

I had this rifle rebarreled and partially re-blueprinted by Long Rifles, Inc. The bolt was changed to a PTG one-piece and the associated faces trued with the action, the bolt was fluted and had an LRI knob installed, the scope taps were opened to #8's and trued (this was way out before), a surface ground LRI recoil lug was pinned to the action, a 1/8 twist 28" Benchmark Heavy Palma contour fluted 5R barrel was threaded/chambered and I also had them thread/chamber a 1/8 twist 26" Bartlein M24 contour 5R barrel for future use. Both used the same 260 Remington reamer with a 0.2980" neck and 0.088" freebore. I also swapped the scope for a Schmidt & Bender PMII 3-12x50 with P3 mil-dot and the trigger for a Timney Calvin Elite at 2#. Mil-spec OD Cerakote on all the metal.

Droptine, very nice rifle. Was the fluting done by Bartlein, or the shop that chambered it?

Fluting was done by Alamo Precision Rifles. Being a LH rifle they ran the flutes counter clockwise as opposed to the clockwise that you see on most other rifles.

Wikipedia says blue prints went out in 1975, but I was at company with an operating blue print machine in 1983.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BlueprintAt any big engineering company before then, there were blue print machine operating girls. They bent over and stretched all day. Aerospace companies paying big wages for unskilled blue print machine girls could hire just he pretty ones. And the machine kept them fit.
By now blueprint machine operating girls are old grandmas.

The fit is pretty good IMHO, maybe a little more room then a regular Manners or McMillan inlet but not bad. The Bart #4 is similar enough to a Proof CF.
I have a safari ks stock and as you know they used a heavy barrel for them. The cf Bart #4 is what I’m eyeing to use in it. I think it’ll be really close! Looks great, congratulations
I have been full length bedding the inlets with 4 layers of pvc tape on the barrel…when removed it yields a nice .040 gap…I mainly do this for water egress in snowy nasty freezing weather x)

If they used the standard Mag contour on them it should be pretty darn close to the #4 Bartlein - the CF wrapped #4 is just the same as the all metal #4 if you want to get the specs they have them on their website. So far its been a fantastic barrel. One thing though if it matters, the Bart CF isn't as "pretty" as the Proof barrels but I can live with that:)
WOW is about all I can say. That is one nice build, and built by one of the best out there. Jon knows how to put together a great rifle - congrats on that one!!
