I've had the parts for this sitting around since forever. Finally shipped em all off to Shaen to have him do his thing.

As usual his work looks great.

It shouldn't be too bad. It's about the same weight as a garden variety hunting 30-06, and the 30-06 burns more powder and tosses 180 grain bullets faster.

Very nice.

Are the hybrid rings low?

Love the rifle, and the cartridge. Great looking rig.

Nice build Hig - and I'll 2nd Shaen does some crazy stuff when he builds a 7MM-08 they turn out most awesome.

Yes. I was worried they'd be too low with the cheek piece on the stock but I think they are going to work out just fine.

I had a set of those LR Hybrids for mine. Nice rings. Can’t remember now why I decided to change. Shaen bedded a 20 MOA rail on mine, then cut out the section over ejection port.

Speaking of rings, how is the bolt clearance on the LRHS?
This was an older anti without the extra downturn - yes?
Posted By: Higginez Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/09/23
No clearance issues whatsoever.

No downturn on the bolt.

I have always been a 7mm-08 fan. The cartridge has performed flawlessly on WT for me. I shoot many other cartridges but compare all to the 7mm-08 for WT deer needs.

I want to put together a 20” barreled rifle to run suppressed as a main deer setup. I was leaning hard towards a 6.5 PRC but your build setup just flipped me back! Awesome setup and congrats.

Very cool Higginez. Looking forward to an update on groups and velocity with your 180 load.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
From the hip,I'm thinking said Plumber has only worked on (5) of my .284's. The "odds" should make you warm/fuzzy. Hint.

ALL of which were expressly geared to 180's. Hint................
Posted By: 65BR Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
Chopped a 700 SS BDL and a 700V-BDL both to 21".......speeds using 100-140s were fine for my needs, though blast was 'enhanced' as well.

I can say a 20.5" LV contour, fluted by Karl K. handles great......blast in the 6.5x47 mild.

Look forward to reports. Enjoy your new rifle.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
I've never bought/built a 7-08 longer than 26",nor shorter than 14"(XP-100) and would never go longer than 22" again. 180's are "blast" friendly, simply because they eat less propellant. Hint................
Posted By: JRS3 Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
Will 180 hybrids work well in an AI mag?
Posted By: Big Stick Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
Of course, though they are a poor choice in comparison. They tend to run .010" shorter in gross length, than a 180 ELD. The 180 Booger Highbird wears a .680 BC,while the 180 ELD is .796. Hint................
Posted By: JRS3 Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
What speed are you getting out of the ELDs and 7mm-08? I want to see what I should expect to 600 yards with a 20” bbl.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/13/23
2600fps is a breeze. Hint.............

Which would be supersonic to around 1,500 yards if anyone was wondering.
Posted By: Big Stick Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 05/14/23
The shift from 162's to 180's,is plum fhuqking amazing...especially in the wind. Hint.

It ain't even "fair". Hint..............

Finally getting a chance to mess with this.

Props to Shaen on the throating. He also milled the action so these would feed. Love that I can just send him stuff and trust he knows what I am trying to do.

He loves CF bbl's too. LOL

You starting out with Staball, or something else?

What is your OAL?
Posted By: Higginez Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 07/31/23
I'm gonna start with 16. I have a schidt ton of it and never could find 17 or Staball.

OAL was somewhere about 2.875"

Shaen did a great job on a .280 AI for me. Turned a stainless barrel to KS contour and it's a thing of beauty. Nice when a smith understands what you'd like and does it.

Did you ask him about turning the CF? ...grin...
Posted By: mathman Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 07/31/23
It looks like the case neck was turned, but not far enough down to the shoulder.

.308 necked down w a false shoulder.

I think you just answered the question of what I’m going to do with this 7 mm hawk hill truck axle.

laugh

Shaene will hate you both.

Got it.

I've done that too, but I guess my 7mm08 FL die doesn't produce as sharp of a transition.
Posted By: Higginez Re: 7-08 from Shaen Rifles - 07/31/23
I got the 180's up to 2,550 fps with 43 gr of RL16. Shot a rough zero and it looks like I'll have enough travel in the LRHS to get to a mile.

The 180's will be super sonic at over a mile fwiw.
