Here is a play toy I've been working with the past few months. It's british owned, but our rules of engagement are a little looser. Thought you might be interested, I think the system is a little over rated. Given the choice I would run a US M24SWS, it's lighter, more mobile with a smoother action. Even with the smaller 308 win I'd be happy. The 5-25 scope is just to much. Keep it around 10x and let it fly.

You don't feel the need for a longer ranged weapons system?

Ryan, the 338 hits real hard way out there. For a static overwatch it's an incredible system. You're not going to foot patrol with it. Moving to a hide in the middle of the night is a ball buster. Often mobility is more of a concern than the super long range spankem.

Also with the scope set much above 16x the focus and eyebox are pretty tough to use. If you're shooting 1/2 MOA at 1500 meters it's a tough shot. The realistic hit distance is not what the movies and soldier of fortune wanbees always talk about. If you can get a 4-600 meter shot take it. Bonking bad guys much past 1000-1200 is a great shot even with lapua. And yes I know everyone has stories of ninjas stacking zombies at 2500M. Cool for them. If we gotta get that far we use the mortars, 105's or call for CAS.

Here is a long range tube. It's a British 51mm. Yes you can lob mortars in flip flops and shorts.

Just curious, but what's your preference for scope?

I tend to agree with you (regardless of brand), you get much above 10x and looking down that tube makes eye placement exponentially more critical.

This weapon has the 5-25 power schmit-bender. It's a great scope and I'd hate to know how much the thing cost. Given the choice I'd probably use a 3.5-10 or a 4-16. On my personal weapons I use Luepolds, I know everyone uses something cooler but it's hard for me to give up on solid equipment that works. But then again the nicest scopes I own are VX3's and Elite 4200's, so I know I'm not a real big spender.

Thanks. Most of my rifles wear 3.5-10x40 Leupolds, but I do have one Mark 4, a 4.5-14x50 that I really like as well. I've tried a few of the 6.5-20s but just haven't been that impressed with their "usability" at the higher magnifications.

I'm sure the S&Bs are nice, but even if I had money to burn, I don't know if I'd buy one. Heck, you can build a nice rifle and put a XV3, Conquest, 4200, or whatever on top for the price of a S&B.

If I might ask what reticle are you using and what your thoughts on it's subtension? Anything you would care to change on the scope and/or reticle design? I'd also be very interested as to your further thoughts on the L115A3... I'm a little surprised you think the action is not smooth. That said you're not operating on a clean square range. Any input is appreciated.

Sorry about the time lapse, it's not been a good week. Prayers are definately appreciated.

The S&B I used had a very complex mil scale reticle system. It's takes some getting use to and may be to busy. It does work. You can really dial in distance with a little practice. I'm sorry I don't know what S&B calls it or even if they installed it. I'm US so I'm used to the M24SWS.

I was suprised by the actions gerky, sticky nature. I've only worked a sample of one and I'm used to working 700 actions. I don't think the actions stickiness was a result of dust or dirt. It's not that tight of an action. I would guess it has a huge price tag and everyone is impressed by that. It's a huge rifle, really better built for static hides.

All that said it hits really hard, and the silencer really soaks up the tossed salad and make the rifle quiter than an AK or M4.
