How do I post a picture?

280_ACKLEY
If you go to the top of the screen and click on FAQ, there is a detailed explanation.

Basically, you need to put your pics on an online host. I use hunt 101, it is free:

http://www.hunt101.com/index.php

Then you put a link to your photo as described in FAQ and that's it. It will seemed complicated to me when reading the instructions, but I fumbled through it and it is really pretty easy.

Good Luck, MM
Come on, show us already.........

280 Ackley,

Send them to me Ill post it for ya.. brockk@earthlink.net
Brock I sent you the pics, thank you very much

280_ACKLEY
Well, I may as well give the details and the pics should follow shortly. This project took 6 months to complete, and was shipped all over Canada to be worked on by different individuals.

Rem 700 SA (Trued, Skeletonized Handle/knob, Helical 12 flute bolt, Machined down shroud, Electroless Nickel Plated)

22" 1:9 stainless Gaillard Precision Barrel (Rem mountain contour)

Wildcat model 7 stock blank layed up a little extra heavy, and then CNC'd for 700 SA BDL with a lightweight foam recoil pad (expertly fit and painted by Mitch Kendall).

Leupie VarXII 2-7x33 w/Zee low bases

Total package with scope weighs 6.0 lbs exactly. After firing a few fouling shots, I began load development. A few different loads quickly yielded the one in the picture - 140gr Ballistic Tip @ nearly 3000fps 3 shots at 100yds (0.29"). It seems to be a shooter

The primary use for this rifle will be yearly backpack trips for Stone sheep, Caribou, Mulies and Goats. Should be just what the doctor orderd

Excluding the action, scope and mounts, this rifle is MADE IN CANADA

280_Ackley,

That is one very nice looking rig.. Looks as though it shoots as well

Brock
Nice rifle!! That bolt handle modification is AWESOME! I dig that a bunch!
I like that a lot. (in all aspects) The bolt handle is very similar to what we are planning for my 600 project.

Any idea what the paint is??

JimF
It's an expoxy based auto paint called Endura (Canadian also ) that is tough as nails. The fellow who builds the stocks in Alberta happens to build racecar parts as well, so works with all of sorts of space age materials. This is the paint he recommends for durability.

280_ACKLEY

Good job!

That is a very nice rifle. I like the bolt handle work too.
You son of a bitch

Sweeeeeet

Surpassed all expectations.

Now, it shoots them varmint bullets very well, what can it do with something that will make an exit hole?
Very impressive !!!

Pard, that is a Hot Rod sumbitch! You really rung the bell.

Kudos on a wickedly wonderful rifle. Jealous here.......................

I've been using 51.0gr of RL-19 with 140gr in my 7-08AI. It will handle a little hotter load in my rifle, but this load has been very accurate with the Partitions I hunt with. My rifle isn't as light as yours. Mine is based on a Sako591M action with a 22" #2 Shilen, 11 twist barrel. It sits in a pillar bedded McMillan with a Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8 scope. Loaded with 5 in the magazine and one in the chamber, it weighs exactly 8 pounds. This rifle also shoots 50.0gr of H-380 very accurately. 49.5gr of IMR 4350 or IMR4831 is also very accurate, but velocity falls off. I've got a lot of loads ready to shoot with moly caoted bullets, but haven't had a chance to get to the range with them yet. My rifle doesn't like 100gr Sierra's all that well, so I'm trying the new Speer 110gr MHP moly. Since I'll be running moly in the bore, I've got a lot of 139-140gr bullets moly coated, as well. I'll let you know how they shoot. I just got my new Oehler 35P, so we'll see.
I believe it was JB (Mule Deer) who wrote that if one wanted a 7-08 Ackley Improved that there was little velocity to be gained over the regular 7-08. He also recommended gettng one of the new short magnums and having it done with and using a facory cartridge. You might consider that rather than going with the AI version.
280,

SCHWEEEEEEEET !!!!!!

You guys are putting enourmous pressure on me to build one of these short action sweeties !!!

Shhhhh, keep it down, the wife might hear !!!!

Very nice,

Tony.
Rolly, I have already built it, so am not looking to switch. 3000fps with a 140gr in a 22" barrel is a LITTLE better than the standard 7-08. With a 4 percent gain in case capacity, it equates to 2 grains more powder. I figure it gets around 50-100 fps more. Not a ton, I will agree, but every little bit counts We all want the most performance we can wring out of a cartridge. Furthermore, I am an Ackley fanatic, and as you know, cannot be helped This little cartridge is big medicine in a small package for most of NA game IMHO. In order to have a 284 Win or 7 SUAM on that action requred lengthening or bolt face modifications. Plus, torching off a 7SUAM in a 6 pounder may be a little more of a handful than I am looking for. I appreciate the suggestions though.

280_ACKLEY
280,

Count me in as a 7-08AI fan too! My 7-08AI is built a little heavier than yours on the same stock. Thats a sweet piece you got there, good job! Hi, my name is MtnHtr and I am an Ackley addict!

MtnHtr
Mtn Hunter, shall we start a new group "Ackley Sluts Anonymous"? I already belong to "Leupie Sluts Anonymous"

280_ACKLEY
Geeeezz......I just decided last night that my "short Bob" project is gonna be a short "better Bob".......and now I'm bein' called a slut............the nerve!

BTW..........I suspect that we will brazenly steal your bolt knob configuration.............

JimF
JimF, I've been itchin' to build a "Better Bob" myself. Can't think of too many cartridges more suited to a nice lightweight. Low recoil and great ballistics would make this one a real winner above treeline. On a 600, a 5 lber should be doable, and a real treat to shoot and pack. Sorry for the name calling, we could always find a more Politically Correct name for the club so as not to offend or discourage any closet Ackley lovers

280_ACKLEY

PS I must not take all the credit for the bolt knob, the idea was sparked by brno284.

280_ACKLEY,
Well, I got my 7-08AI to the range today for testing with moly coated bullets. It was 100 degrees when I left the range, and 109 degrees when I got home. I'm sure my loads weren't performing the same way at 100 that they would at 30 degrees. Nonetheless, here's what I came home with:

Fireformed Remington Brass and CCI Benchrest Primers for all loads

110gr Speer MHP-Moly Coated
46.5gr IMR3031
.745" average groups

139gr Hornady BTSP Interlock-Moly Coated
51.5gr RL-19
.798" average groups

I didn't bother taking the Oehler 35 to the range. It was just to hot to fool with. I tried several powders and loads, but these were the most accurate. Obviously, I'm not pleased with these groups representing the "best", but it's what I shot today. Since this was the first time my Shilen had seen moly, I'm hoping my groups will get a little better than what I shot today. Next time out, the barrel should be a little better moly prepped, the temperature is definitely going to be below 100 degrees, and the wind a little more cooperative. So much for excuses.

The good news is, my 20BR shot in the low .3's all day, fighting the same conditions (moly also new to this barrel).

Groups in the .7's and you are obviously (NOT) pleased??

Boy aren't you bein' a little hard on yourself......

Unless it was a varmint or target rifle of course.

I expect my hunting loads with 140gr Nosler Partitions to shoot better than 3/4". This rifle normally shoots under 1/2" groups with my best loads. I'm definitely not impressed with my groups with the varmint load. I'll try the same loads again under better range conditions or look for a better load. Heck, I don't know. Maybe it was just the shooter.
Sam, thanks for the info. I'd also be interested in the velocity of those loads, especially the 139 BTSP. I have shot the load with 52gr H4350 and a 140 BT 2 more times, once was 0.44" and the other was 0.37". So, it appears that this load averages 0.37" (0.29", 0.44", 0.37") right at the 3000 fps mark. This should suffice for sheep and mulies. I may tinker with a 140 Partition one of these days. Have you tried the 140 XLC by any chance?

280_ACKLEY
Posted By: SST Re: 7-08 ACKLEY IMPROVED MTN RIFLE - 07/24/03
The 139gr Hornady BTSP and the 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips normally shoot around 3030fps, with the 140gr Partitions slightly slower. That is with 51.0gr of RL-19. 50.0gr of H-380 does about the same. I've loaded up close to 3050fps but not as accurately. Those velocities are at 35 degrees. I'm now trying out bullets I've moly coated, and I'm pretty far from finding the right load. I haven't tried the XLC's yet.
Flinch, here it is

280_ACKLEY
Thanky Flinch
Looking thru my 7-08AI data, I must have one hellva a slow barrel. Actually I built two 7-08AIs with Pac-Nor barrels (22.5" & 23") Both rifles would not generate over 2950fps with various bullets and powders. I also tried Rem, WW and Lapua brass and Fed 210, WW primers. Bullets were uncoated, even tried the Barnes TSX and still maxed out around 2950fps.

Whats interesting is RL19 data, Nosler shows a whopping 2922fps for a std 7-08 using 140gr bullets. In both of my 7-08AIs, neither would generate over 2800fps with 51gr of RL19. At 53gr of RL19 my 22.5" 7-08AI only generated 2905fps and the fire-formed case would not take anymore powder even with a drop tube.

I don't care for ball powders so I stick to extruded types. I've tried Varget, RL15, RL19, IMR4350 and H4350. Never able to push 140s past 2950fps without pressure signs.

Best load for the 140gr Part were with H4350, maxed out 2960fps. Its still a great round, but I would seriously consider a 7SAUM or 7WSM now that these are out. Heck, I've thought about having mine re-chambered to 284Winnie! But............I'm not a gambler!

MtnHtr
Man, that's one sweetheart of a rifle. My 7-08AI sounds very similiar to "SST"'s.Mines a Sako L579 action with a 23-1/2" #2 PacNor in a MacMillan Hunter pattern stock, built by Bill Leeper. Not light but balances and carrys well.Has a 2.5-8X Leupold in Redfield mounts. I've been shooting 49 grs of IMR4350 under a 140 Ballistic Tip,getting 2975-3000fps.I recently tried some H414 under the same bullet,..50.5 grs rang up nearly 3100fps.It's a real nice cartridge, does everything a 270 or 280 will do, but in a short action. Regarding velocity gain over the standard 7-08,the first time I fired my rifle was with factory Remington140 CoreLocts to fireform some brass.I was shocked to see the chrony read 2900.Firing the standard cartridge in the Improved chamber should lower velocity a bit,not so with this one.And they shot a 3 shot group of .775".Three shot groups of various charges of IMR4350 went .790",.490",.646",.540" and .615".I'd say Bill Leeper knows how to run a reamer..........
Now let me open a can of worms. A 7-08ai needs a 26" tube. Buddy of mine consistantly wrings 3125 out of his sucks action, douglass #5 barrel(26" of course), and mac stocked rifle. Uses the 140 nosler balistic tip and varget powder. Am trying to get him to try the xxx or the blue meanies. And his rifle is not "heavy". around 8lbs. Not too hard to pack around unless the heaviest things you pick up are 16oz longnecks and the tv remote.
You better watch out! Big Stick ran off the last Louisiana fella that tried to sell the 26" theory!!! (actually was claiming 3200+fps)

https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...in=125088&Search=true#Post125421

MtnHtr

savage,

If I'm going to pack 26" of barrel around, it will be chambered for the 7RM. My 25.5" 7RM is pushing 140 Barnes TSX at 3450fps, much improved over the 7-08AI.

Heading out in the A.M., maybe I can manage to bag a critter with my "slow barrel" 7-08AI!

MtnHtr
Hey there is a lot of difference in 3125 and 3200+. I like the 26" tubes my self. If it gives a little more velocity, great. I like the way the longer heavier tubes add weight to the end of my rifles. I shoot long distances and like every little bit of added weight to help me hold still that I can get. Have never been able to hold still with a short light barreled rifle. Others may be able to but I dont do as well with them. I just have to be in a little better shape to carry the extra weight. My 300wsm has the 26" tube and it should add about 50 to 60fps over the 24". May be less but I havent checked it through a chrono yet. But I know it aint slowing it down. Am also aware that the 7-08imp tends to not be picky about barrel lengths. I just like the 26" tubes. Regardless of what its on.
