Anyone,

Does anyone have any experience with a Black Star barrel; good or bad?

Ringman,

I had one screwed into a SUCKS action 3006. Barrel shot pretty well with various loads but never did quite shoot as well as other barrels from Hart or Lilja on my other guns. As I recall, Blackstar went belly up unless that changed recently.

Good Luck

Wow, someone from my home town. I graduated from GPHS in 1978. I have made it back home 4 of the last 5 years to elk hunt in the SW Cascades.

A poster here that goes by "Silver Bullet" is a fellow Oregonian and has used Blackstar barrels with great success.

It is my understanding that they are no longer in business.

Some shot good and others did not, at least from my expieriance with them.
From what I saw and measured, the electrochem lapping that they did was sometimes not spot on and left the barrels at times with oversized bores in places.

This is just from a handfull that I saw. Best I can say from that.

Thanks fellas. It looks like I will fire lap my new barrel.

I have twice eat up a carbide reamer on a Blackstar barrel.....that thing was harder than woodpecker lips... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />..that 770 is some weird stuff....I gave up on them after that...

FWIW, John Ricks feels the same way about Blackstar barrels..........
They are alive and well. Call, write or e-mail for questions. Unfortunately, they have had a horrific history as a result of the first sale of the company to an outside concern. But the original company has regained it's control and is trying to elevate their reputation back to where it was when they first started.

From their site:
AccuMax II rifle barrels are button-rifled by Lothar Walther to BlackStar specifications. All AccuMax II bores are electropolished & tapered for superior accuracy, interior ballistics and reduced fouling.
Lands are .0035" to .005", depending on caliber.

The steel, although called by Blackstar ss700 or something, is actually LW-50.

Walther made the barreles for BlackstarTO BlackStar specs

Blackstar then did thier cryo stuff and electro polishing.

The Walther tubes are hard to machine. You have to crank the speed and feed up while machining and chambering them. I cut threads at 250RPM and chamber at a bit higher.

You must use a good high pressure water thin oil blown through the bore while chambering, or you will have trouble.

I noted that they didn't have a clue as to final bore dimensions left by their electropolishing process.
Nor did they have any control over the final bore dimensions.
So why would anyone buy one

U se Walther barrels. It is noce to be able to call and give them the barrel number and get an exact inner dimension for any part of thge barrel I want. I have done it and was shocked when they actually had that data recorded for a particular barrel of many that had.
