What would you think of the 375 Ruger case necked to accept .411" bullets. 400 grains at 2400? maybe a little less but in the ballistic ball park. I know a 416 is more practical but the 411-412" bore is a proven performer with better SD for a 400 grain Woodleighs. I've tweeked the shoulder and taper some and forming from basic brass gives about .035" of taper and .400" of neck with a 25 degree shoulder for better extraction and feeding.

The difference in real world performance between a .411 and a .416 is 100% between ones own two ears. Build it if one wants something different just because, but do not labor over or bore anyone over any performance benefits. They do not exist.

For great performance and terrific feeding etc one needs to look only to the rightfully great 416 Rigby. No real reason, with a properly set up and polished up action a 416 Ruger would not feed plenty good for all purposes.

It would be a beltless 400 H&H, but without the vaunted H&H name.

The only good thing about the 400 H&H is the long neck makes it friendly to cast bullet shooting. But with a much better selction of .416" component bullets, the 416's are a much better choice for a hunting round.

I would be more prone to go to a .416 and have, or a .423 and duplicate the 404 Jefferys..

The problem I see with a .411 bullet is that it is ment for speeds up to 2125 FPS in a 450-400-3 1/4" or perhaps some .405 Win. were .411 I have been told,? Also they are harder to come by. Woodleighs are velocity specific for sure...

At any rate the 375 Ruger case would generate upwards of 2400 FPS or better and the .411 bullets are not velocity specific for those high velocities.

I also strongly expect the .416 Ruger to be the next generation of .416s.

Well, I agree with all that and I do have a working model of the case holding .423" bullets. There is no doubt tha 416 bore is more popular and lacks nothing ballistically but everybody has one. I do like the 423" and have a few of them, wild and common. The 404 Dakota is a good one. The is a 423 Caprivi in an M98 working now, made on the modified 375 Ruger case. I think the 400 on the case with more taper and less shoulder angle and loaded to more moderate levels will make for a useful general purpose cartridge. The 411" bullets are available and the 350 and 400 grain Swift A frames are made to take the full 2400 fps velocity.

The 300gr. TSX and 400 gr. Barnes Banded seem to not care about speeds.

There are more .411's out there than one thinks, certainly enough to do anything one would wish.

My 416 Rigby gets there with anemic factory loads, I run 'em up to 2600 with my handloads. The large and efficient 375 Ruger case necked up to .411 in a strong bolt action rifle should get them to 2400 or so in my estimation as well.
