Thought some may find this of interest.
I recently bought this M70 for a very good price. In its 73 years of life someone had drilled and tapped the action for a side mount. It had the Lyman 48 on it when I bought it.
So I made the quick detachable scope mount. The mount is designed so you can use both the scope or peep sight.

I have a Winchester Model 70 Bull Gun made in February of 1937 myself. It is one of my pride and joys!
This Bull Gun is in 99% condition and all original - the caliber designation on the side of the extra heavy 28" barrel reads simply: 300 Magnum.
I assume you have fired your Rifle by now and I would enjoy hearing your thoughts on its accuracy and the like.
I have ALWAYS wanted to fire my 300 H&H Bull Gun but have resisted that urge for going on 40 years now.
Again good for you on owning that fine old Rifle and for constructing that unique and useful mounting system.

The rifle is basically a super grade with all the attributes of a super grade, wood, cheek piece, detachable swivels, forearm tip and better checkering, except the floor plate is not marked.
My rifle was carried on many a hunting trip and fondled much. It has patina. Oh the stories it could possible tell. It is perfect.

Frankly, I feel sorry for a gun having never been fired in 40 years, it must think your are mad at it.
An unfired gun is a gun we don't know whether it works or not.

WOW, that is one fine piece there. EXCELLENT grab. Wish I could find one as well. Terrific gunsmithing and machining as well there.

That checkering is very strong, and it looks like there's good figure in the stock.
You did well with the QD scope mount too..!!!
The rifle looks to be in very fine condition by looking at the bluing in the pix.

The last 300H&H M70 I saw was beat to death and priced
at $1800.

Let me ask a question:

As I said in my first comment, the gun was already drilled and tapped when I got it. The pattern of screws and dowel pin locations is not typical G&H. The typical G&H screw pattern has been, screw, dowel, screw, dowel, screw. This gun was dowel, screw, screw, screw, dowel. I would be curious if anyone may know what the original mount might have been? G&H, Echo, and Jaeger all used the same pattern so it wasn't any of them.

Also I did sight the gun in today. I sighted the scope for 2" high at 100 yards. I then removed the scope and re-installed it. I was very much pleasantly surprised when the next 3 shots went into a 3/4" group 2" high.
