Pardon my ignorance in this sub-forum, I cant say that I have much experience with wildcats but heres my question.

Is there a wildcat based on the .30-30 case in which its been necked up to .35cal? or for that matter necked up to make it a straight walled cartrage?

Every heard of the 38-55? It was around before the 30-30 and if you neck down the 38-55 to 30 caliber you get the 30-30. That takes care of your straight walled case.

On the other, I've heard of the 35/30-30 but I've never seen one.

Never heard of a 358 variety. Maybe he is thinking of the 25-25, same case, but not straight.

Or, the 375 Win. Again, same case, a hair less capacity, but created to get around SAAMI 38-55 pressure specs......

The .357 Herrett is also based on the .30-30 case. It is shortened a bit however after necking up. Herrett and Bob Milek, IIRC, developed it for the Contender single shot pistol, and they felt the basic case had too much capacity for a 10" barrel.

I had one years ago. The barrel wasn't very good, and it didn't shoot especially well. The cases are not terribly hard to make.

A .35 Remington is way easier...

The .35Rem. or .357Max will get you there, more easily.

If you want the .30-30 based case, with more diameter, just go .38-55 or .375Win, and be done with it.

All very interesting information, I didnt realize that the .375win was based on the .30wcf case, cool. And yes Im looking around for a Marlin 336sc(vintage) and leaning more toward the .35rem.

You would be much happier with the more potent 356 Winchester. Basically a rimmed 308 case necked to 358. Another way of saying the same thing is a rimmed 358 Winchester. Quite a leap up in power. If you need more power than a 30/30 standard or AI, this is the one to go to in a hammer type levergun. In a model 88 or 99, just go 358. PO Ackleys books have lots of wildcats based on improved versions of the 30/30, mostly for use in single shots.

Some people have gone to a long neck 357 Herrett, still uses the Herrett dies, but cases aren't trimmed and the smith runs a necker/throater in a bit deeper for the full length cases to chamber.

The 357 herrett contender barrel I had was a good shooter, 10" tube and 1 1/2" 3 shot groups at 100 yds w/ 200 gr cast bullet leaving the muzzle @ 2000 fps.

I'd rather have a 357 max in a lever gun, but if I ever come across a 30/30 lever with a trashed barrel, it'll become a 35-30 or 357 herret long.
