I have a VZ-24 in 8x57 that is in awesome shape but without matching numbers so its pretty much just a shooter. Have any of you guys used a VZ-24 action for a build? I'm wondering how much more money would have to be thrown into it due to needing to replace the bolt handle and remove the hump off of the receiver bridge?

I would leave the charging hump there and have the base contoured to fit it. Prices various but a 1st class bolt handle install is about $175 and another $150 to set it up for a scope.

Now if you're looking for a "bargain" build, ER Shaw use to do that work for cheap. It didn't look custom just functional.

Those "cheap" old actions seldom turn out that way in the end.

However, it can be built into something great, with a little time, work, and money.

I'd suggest a 338-06 myself.

Unfortunately this is the case, but there ain't no factory rifle that is as much fun as a lovely custom, either.

Yeah take a look at the gunsmithing services page on the ER Shaw site. They'll do a bent bolt handle, aftermarket trigger w/ side safety, new shroud, and rebarrel for you at about the best price you're going to get it.

I'd ask that they send the military barrel back, as you can probably recover some funds by selling it on EBay.

Dan, I just bought a 416 Taylor built on a VZ-24 action from Calvin here on the 'fire, I stuck the barreled action in a synthetic B/C stock with aluminum chassis, bolted it down and chronoed some 400 gn loads yesterday afternoon.

The action seems very strong and very well made, the conversion was spot on by someone who knew there stuff.

If ya dont want to fool with having the boltface opened, a 9.3X62mm Mauser would be a very nice chambering for a build on that action.

I've got a VZ-24 for thats getting that exact treatment as we speak. From what I've seen it should turn out pretty nice, maybe nicer than I wanted even.

As far as calibers, right now I'm thinking I want to stay with a standard bolt face and something European. Maybe 7x57 or 6.5x55.

Nice rig Craigster. I used to work with a guy who would buy rifles
and actions that he put away to build customs later down the
road, but never got around to it. He had an FN Mauser benchrest
action NIB that he bought from another guy who bought it and
never used it. I believe it was made for 222/223 size rounds,
but it was still a long action.
