Now that I got your attention, don't get your panties in a wad, it's all in good fun.....yuk yuk...(tongue-in-cheek icon)

Been looking for a budget LR toy, and have had the hankerin' for a older Stainless Sendero in 7 mag, but couldn't find the right one at the right price. Enter this, only a barreled action to start:

Stainless 700 L/A, trued up and chambered by:

In a nine twist Brux number 6 contour, cut to 26", throated for the big boys, with a .250 tapered lug sandwiched in. Even came with a 20 MOA base, Hurst shifter knob, and a sweet Jewell to round out the metal.

As much as I wanted a McM, I was torn on which model, as well as trying to keep this set-up less painful money wise. Luckily, someone posted up an original Sendero stock for sale at a fair price, so I snapped it up. It's was painted a funky Texas Krylon Camo that I was going to re-do, but it started to grow on me:

Keeping with the budget theme, 300 once fired W-W cases:

[Linked Image]

I spent a butt load of time comparing the 168 vs 180 Berger VLD's, and came to the conclusion that the 168's were within less than a half MOA of wind compared to the 180's at 1K. But in an about face, figgered the 162 A-Max was plenty good BC wise, and at $25 a box vs $40+ for the VLD's, the A-Max was the default winner. Big brown dropped them off today.

Hope they shoot.....

That looks like much fun. Very nice.

I have a 7em-em seasoning right now. No time to work on it, but I'll prolly get it going sometime next year.
Nice snag on the goodies Al can't wait to she the range report ! Take care Isaac

Lol! Ain't that the truth. Hope it shoots like it should, you have assembled some nice parts.

Man I would be running 180 bergers in that thing. Thanks for not posting the buy price as it would have pissed me off. I have roughly the same thing minus the jewell and need to work up a load once killing season is over. Anxious to hear about the amax.

Almost forgot.....

It was a toss up between a spare 4.5-14x40 Mark IV and Talley's to keep the weight down, or my extra 5.5-22x50 Nightforce in Seekins rings. I'm a power whore, so I was leaning towards the NF.

The 20 MOA base that was on it has the older Allen head screws, and I was a RCH from stripping the heads to get the damn thing off, so I quit whilst I was ahead. So by another default, I'm going to gun the NF. Tough concession, but I'll soldier on.....

Buddie of mine has a 7mm WSM.
You know the round thats far Superior to the 7mm Mag smirk
I did load developmet for it with H4831 SSC and 162g AMAXs.
SO far about 6 deer are DRT bigtime with the AMAX.
Not sure I want to use that bullet on anythinbg much bigger than a deer.
Shooing 16oz. MountainDew bottles filled with water at 500 yards is kind boring.
You should do very well.
Nice looking outfit.

Wasn't the least bit interested in a WSM....barrel life sucks.

Besides, I had a set of 7 Mag dies to build around.... whistle

Deer would be the top of the weight chart for usage.

More than likely paper, steel, and milk jugs.....

Ridgway Rifle Club
2012
1,000 yd. Varmint Bench Rest Silhouette
May 6th
June 3rd
July 8th
*** August 4th & 5th -Two Day Aggregate Championship
September 9th
October 7th
The Ridgway Rifle Club introduced a brand new shooting discipline in 2010 combining Metallic
Silhouette and 1000 yard bench rest into one new exciting game. As in Silhouette the shooter will be
presented steel targets in banks of 5 at four distances that must be knocked over to be scored as a hit. There
are 20 shooting positions (benches). As in Silhouette competitors may request a starting animal and bank if
available, then be assigned a concrete bench and target bay for use in placing their equipment and rifles to
engage the target(s). As in silhouette, a match will consist of 40 shots fired for record, 10 shots at each
distance and different steel animal target. The match winner will be the competitor who knocks over the
greatest number of targets of the combined distances (best of 40).
Cost: $15 for one gun $20 for two guns for those wanting to compete in both the 12 and 17 lb classes
For more information contact Fred Kielbowick klbwckfcomcast.net or call 814-772-4845 or visit
ridgwayrifleclub.com
The target shapes and distances are - Crows at 850 yards
Ground hogs at 900 yards
Bobcats at 950 yards
Coyotes at 1000 yards
There are two classes of guns:
Heavy- with a maximum weight of 17 lbs and mirroring the dimension restrictions of the light gun
class established by the Original 1000 yard Bench Rest Club in Williamsport.
 And
Standard with a maximum weight of 12 lbs with the same dimension restrictions as the Heavy class
gun.
Magnum Calibers may be used but none larger than .338 bullet diameter. In addition the Ridgway Rifle
Club reserves the right to disallow any competitor whose ammunition is found to be causing undo damage
to the steel targets.
As in the 1000 yd rules, the gun rests must be two separate items not physically connected .( no lead sleds
or one piece rests allowed nor may the gun be otherwise physically restricted from free recoil except by the
shooters shoulder and hands)
As in silhouette, a shooter may have a spotter or coach to assist during the competition.
Time limits 5 min. to set up followed by 2 min. for sighters 15 seconds to load after the ready
command followed by 4 min. for 5 shots at five animal targets for record after the fire command. After the
cease fire command all bolts will be removed from the firearms. Targets will then be reset and shooters will
have another 5 shot string, without additional sighters, completing that distance/animal before leaving the
line. When the shooters relay is re-called to the line he/she will advance on to the next distance/animal in
progressive sequence until all four distances and animals have been engaged.
Awards will be: Match Winner, 2nd Open, 1st 3rd in each class.(Master, AAA, AA & A) in both rifle
categories, 12 lb. & 17 lb.
Classification: Competitors will be classified at their first attended match based on the score shot.
A class 0- 10, AA class 11 20, AAA class 21 30, Master class 31 40 . First time shooters will
compete in the highest class of the day. Awards will be given out 1 per three shooters in each class and gun
category.

At the Oct 7 shoot, the last shoot of the year.
A guy shooting a 7mm WSM with 162g AMAXs set a new club record with a high score of 36 targets.
He missed two crows at 850 yards and two woodchucks at 900 yards.
I didnt see any 7mm mags on the line blush
dave
Posted By: aalf Re: Who Needs a Mashburn...... - 10/31/12
I didn't say they weren't accurate....I said barrel life sucked.

I shoot real life 1K BR, and you don't see any 7 mags there either.....
Posted By: dave7mm Re: Who Needs a Mashburn...... - 10/31/12
My friends 162g AMAX shots on deer are impressive.
You ever get around to squeezing off a deer or two.
Your going to like it.
Just like flippen a switch.
And like you say, they dont cost 40 a box either.
Your 7mm MAG should do well.
Any I was ever around kicked like a mule.
Thats because most were deer hunting weight rifles.
Im not thinking theres a big difference in barrel life between a 7mm Mag and a 7mm WSM.It all realitve I guess.
This might be a good time for you to try out the MMI tru tech salt bath nightriding stuff.
A 7mm RSAUM is on my bucket list.

Well, it's good to know another November B-Day'er....Happy B-Day to 'ya. And a well deserved present to yourself, to boot. cool

Mine is Nov. 2 and I'm still ruminating. I started the birthday thing rolling by laying in 8,000 .30 cal. J4 jackets. But those jackets beget further labor to turn 'em into hole punches. I feel the need to be a bit nicer to myself by adding something fun to the gun safe. I'm a slut for the Browning B78's, so maybe.....?????

Happy B-Day and good shootin'. smile -Al

Posted By: aalf Re: Who Needs a Mashburn...... - 12/02/12

OK, time for an update......

After initial load work, I wasn't very happy....seemed the gun wasn't being very consistent. So, figuring the aluminum bedding block was the culprit, and as much as I didn't want to, I gathered up the Steel Bed, and gave it a proper bedding job, including the shank, and a generous float for the rest of the barrel.

[Linked Image]

After a couple of days of curing, I went back out and gave it another go at 200 yards with H-4831 and the 162 A-Maxes. The last load gave me one ejector mark out of the 3 shots, and the group opened up. I ain't giving the loads, you'll have to guess:

[Linked Image]

A couple of days later, I had the chance to run it out a little further. I was running the load that gave me the 200 yard .595" group, which I feel is two grains under my max.

400 yards and virtually no wind:

[Linked Image]

500 yards, and the wind was starting to puff. 3rd shot blew out. The four go into a 1.7"....

[Linked Image]

600 yards, and more puffing:

I have NOT shot it. I'm going to sell it new, unfired. It'll be in the classifieds within a couple weeks, unless I sell it word of mouth first. Really a nice one, tho.

A little update....

I never really cared for the camo the stock came with, and it had a couple of bumps and bruises, so I felt it was a good time to give it a new look. A little Krylon in flat tan and a top coat of matte clear, and it's ready to dance:

That'll do aalf..... that'll do.

Been running an older Sendero in 7RM lately myself.... the platform and cartridge seem a match made in heaven.
Posted By: aalf Re: Who Needs a Mashburn...... - 12/30/12
I'd been itching to run this out a bit more, so a couple of days before the first big snow hit, I decided I better get out to my LR spot before it makes it inaccessible.

First up was 825 yards:

[Linked Image]

I find it interesting when I hear guy say it takes 20-30-40 shots for their gun to "settle" in before they trust it.

I dialed in for 825, and lined up on a cow pie just to the right of the target. My first clean/cold shot is the low shot, the impact just to the left was shot #2:

[Linked Image]

It was kinda foggy, but I could center on the target OK. I dialed in two clicks of wind and ripped off 5:

[Linked Image]

Of course I don't know which shot dropped low, but the 4 go into 5 1/2", 5 in 11 3/4"

Back to 1036:

[Linked Image]

Dialed in the dope and killed the rogue pie:

[Linked Image]

Then moved over left and banged off another five:

[Linked Image]

Four shots go into 5 1/2", all five go 12 3/4"...dammit.

Let's go back a bit more....1207 and I'm at the fence:

[img]http://imageshack.us/a/img401/2787/011yly.jpg[/img]

Don't remember what happened on the pie, as it's been too far back, and I didn't take a pic.

[img]http://imageshack.us/a/img708/5635/015jhk.jpg[/img]

The group is a flat 12 inches, and those three nestle into an even 3".

I'd like to play with some bigger Bergers, but I think I'm going to sell if anyone's in the market for a proven long range stick.

Posted By: aalf Re: Who Needs a Mashburn...... - 12/30/12

nice nice nice!!!

Noticed your wind flag was quartering, coming at you which explains the vertical shot dispersion.

nice shooting!

MY 7 mag shoots the 162g SST MUCH better than the A max...bummer 3070 fps with Retumbo and Fed 215's.
I think that looks much nicer and I am glad to see I am not the only one to put something together and then go and sell it...UGH.If I only could stop doing that,I would probably be rich....or well off....Very Nice Gun..
28 MOA to 1200 puts muzzle velocity above 3100fps.
