What are the best options for steel bottom metal for the Husky 1640 commercial action?

Thanks
Are there options for the 1640 that are lighter than steel?

I have a 1640 I will be obtaining this week...
Yes, I am sure my current aluminum is lighter than steel.

The 1640's came with steel and aluminum bottom metal. As for substitutes, I'm not sure. Mine came a steel one and I stuck with it. The M98 would be a very close match but don't know if it would need fitting or not.

That's not good:(

I figured if anyone knew it was you!
I'm on my way home from Kansas City. Tomorrow I'll pull mine out of the stock and see if it mates up with a M98 BM.

I'll report back on this thread.

I "think" that many 98-pattern bottom units would work, although minor mods. might be required.

I have one customized 4100 in a Brown kevlar stock and with the original and rather mediocre steel unit, but, it is currently sighted-in with my 140 NP handloads and I do not want to take it apart and then need to re-sight....my range is a 3 hr. round trip from home.

When, my .280Rem. with the Kreiger Fwt. tube gets here from my stock guy I will check as I cannot recall exactly what BM is on it now. but, I suspect that an Argy 1909 unit would fit.

If, this is really crucial, as in a prospective purchase-good deal, say so here and I will take the 7x57 apart and try one of my spare Argy BMs and an FN, if I can find it. But, I am pretty certain that the 98 models will work.

Here's a place in Canada which has both steel and aluminum bottom metal.

Guys,

Thanks for the quick offers to take stuff apart. There is no emergency so please no one inconvenience yourself.

I have heard the Argy 1909 works, but my guy didn't have a bead on one of those either.

Thanks again,

I have been told by others more in the know than me that regular mauser bottom metal would work with a Brno small ring so yours should be no different. This doesn't take into account any inletting to do, or gaps to possibly fill,or possibly some minor work to ensure the trigger has clearance through the bottom metal.
Steel DM Bottom Metal of Remington 700 BDL are the highest best quality DM's in markets and it has been chooded by many professionals over the world. The reason are their stainless steel usage.
Most bottom metalls for m98 works ok! Just don't expect them to fit the inlet in an original stock.
We at McMillans have the guard screw spacing for the 1640 series rifles at 7.825". This is close enough to the 7.835" of the standard 98 Mauser that they should fit. The .010" difference is probably a extra cup of coffee in whoever measured one of them.
If someone were looking I have a really nice set of 1909 bottom metal thats been massaged to fit the small ring husky. Might cost you a bit though! smile
thanks everyone. i am going to try the m98. i stumbled into 3 of these actions at a great price and about to started building the last 2.
