Thinking about re-barreling a LA rem700 before the McMillan gets here, and I want to try and find an in-stock barrel ASAP.

Anyone know what an equivalent contour from a manufacturer would be for a Remington 700 factory sporter? I know a #3 Bartlein is too chunky as I called and asked.

Yes I know you can order one, but I'm not waiting 6 months.
A #2 is going to be pretty close, but the shank area will be different than a factory sporter contour. The sporters have virtually no actual shank, but taper all the way to the lau.

What caliber are you looking for? Any particular twist?
30-06

I need to narrow down the twist, but something that can handle 168, 180 and 200 grain.
I thought a #2 would be the closest, perhaps I should just try and get in touch with McMillan or Rick and alter my order. Believe it might be a whisker too late though
Lilja carries 1-11 twist #2s on-hand. Should work fine for those bullets
Modifying a rem sporter contour inlt for a #2 is pretty simple given a little sandpaper, dowel and a few minutes. BTDT a number of times.
Yeah, called Mickey and I missed the change window. Hmmm

I hate to be a bother, can you post a picture of your handiwork?

I'm quite handy myself, so a quick mod is not an issue
unfortunately, I don't have any pics of the ones that I have done. I did it to this stock, and this is a #2 Lilja contour-ed barrel

Lilja will recontour one of their in-stock barrels to a remington sporter. 2 week turn around, modest price.
No worries!

I gave Longrifles Inc a call after work, and got it all sorted out. He said a #3 would drop in, or require a smidge of sanding, so all good with me.

Thanks for those that replied.
Also Longrifles does not work with Lilja barrels for 'tooling' reasons, so I will avoid them based solely on that.
Weird. I would avoid a smith who avoids Lilja.

I would also,...that's too weird.

tooling issues?......
He gave me a technical explanation, but I was driving, so I don't recall precisely.

His word was good enough for me.
Interesting....... most guys on this forum always seem to say go with the barrel maker that the smith reccomends!
He said anything BugHoles.com sells was good to go.
Krieger, Brux, Rock, Bartlein, Obermeyer, Mullerworks
I have 9 brux barrels on order but they're still a few months out. I sent them a rem mag sporter take off and a standard sporter take off so they are going to patern my contours off of those. Most places don't stock the rem sporters but I'm going to keep ordering 10 at a time so I'll have some available soon. I ordered 8 twist .224, 243, 264's and 8.5 twist .284s and 10 twist 308's. I'll probably use 3 or 4 myself and the rest will go to friends and campfire members.

Bb,

You going to have a standard sporter 243 available? I'd like one if possible. A mag contour 284 would work too.
