use 7mm mag as parent case and a 9.3mm/320 grain bullet.

how would that perform?
how would you go about building it?
Posted By: Steelhead Re: wildcat idea - 10/08/13
Probably a hair faster then a 9.3x62 but a bunch more expensive.

Probably pretty well.

I would get to the point you're at, and stop.

A 375 Ruger or 375 H&H would be a lot cheaper.

I don't believe that's a new concept. smile If you go back many years in the Handloader's Digest (I believe); It was called the 9.3 American.

I took a quick perusal, but couldn't lay my fingers on it. IIRC, the author used the .338 Win case but that's rather a moot point...

thts what im hoping to do.the 375 Ruger fits the length and is impressive. It just so happens the 7mm rifle in question has a barrel that was not screwed in,but pressed in. So a rebore is the only option.I dont know if the bbl is thick enough to rebore to .375 or even .366. Any input would be appreciated.
Posted By: realitycheck Re: wildcat idea - 10/08/13
thanks for all the input
Posted By: Steelhead Re: wildcat idea - 10/08/13
What is the rifle in question?
Posted By: smokepole Re: wildcat idea - 10/08/13
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say "imaginary."

358 Norma +p smile

Can a barrel even be re-bored if it can't come off of the receiver?
I would think not, but...

Even better, if you had the knowledge, experience, and wherewithal to develop a "new" wildcat, is this the kind of platform you'd choose?

realitycheck,

What everybody else said already, plus:

I just ran some internal ballistic calculations, and it would get about 100 fps more than the 9.3x62 at the same pressures with 286's.

If you're serious, Charlie Sisk has the reamers for around 20 9.3 wildcats, and I'm sure "your" cartridge is among them.

He wants to build this abortion using a Remington 710 according to his thread in the gunsmithing section.

Sounds like a cluster [bleep] already.
Posted By: Mule Deer Re: wildcat idea - 10/11/13
Actually it sounds like an impossibility.

You can't make chit like this up... crazy

So if thats the case, does anyone know how safe it is to have a rifle rebored to lets say from a 7 mm mag to a 9.3x62 Mauser or a .375 Ruger? The cartridge lengths would match and feed properly, but would the barrel be made to thin to run hot loads through it? Has anyone ever had a rifle rebored before? I found a company called JES that rebores rifles to .35+ calibers.

Does anybody have any experience with the Remington model 710 and changing its barrel/caliber?

After getting good advice:

I wont try a Browning though,thanks.

how about this one?

17-50BMG

The powder of choice would be a duplex load. 50% Kingsford/50% Coffeemate.

Bullet?

Here's a realitycheck for ya. The crappy model 710 you're planning on using is going to perform really well in blowing half your face off the first time ya touch that baby off.

Back in the day there was a wildcat detailed in Shooting Times called the .040x50 BMG. It fired 0.040 inch sewing needles at an unbelievably high muzzle velocity. I can't remember what powder they used but they had to load it through the primer flash hole one grain at a time.
Posted By: Gibby Re: wildcat idea - 10/11/13
the reality here is there is no reason to build the 9.3 described here. It's just a good conversation start to have fun with on this Friday afternoon. Ditto on the model 710. Was it four recalls or five?

Sewing needles for bullets. Has to be a smooth bore. Are the sewing needle tips dulled to increase the me-plate for more knock down. That has to have some serious penetration.

Would Hoppe's clean coffeemate out of the bore?

Just for kicks. Try throwing coffeemate on a campfire. Step back.

9.3 USA is the .338 necked up.

358 Norma is so much more practical tho . . .

Or a .358 WSM. I'm thinking of building one, but still looking for a donor with a pressed-in barrel..........
