Posted By: TC1 G33/40 donor found today for $350! - 12/15/14
You the know the saying even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then? Well, today I did!

It's already been cut on so the Mauser collectors can sleep well tonight (I probably won't though cool) Actually it's not a bad looking rifle as is. A little dated but still nice looking. One thing that really bothers me though is the barrel is marked .257 Roberts and the rifle has been rechambered to a .25-06 and not remarked, not cool.

Did I mention I got it for $350, HAR!

Right now I'm thinking a 3-position M70 style safety, straight Oberndorf style bolt handle, a feather weight 7X64 barrel and maybe a mannlicher stock.

I've got another Mauser project I'm collecting parts for that I'm thinking I may need to liquidate and concentrate on this one. I've always wanted a G33/40 and thinking full speed ahead on this now.

Mike Mc, you reading this? wink

NICE. I'd go 7x57. Maybe an Edge.

I'm a little heavy on 7X57's. An edge on a G33/40? Double yuck! grin
A swirly then.
Pop that barrel off and send it to me. Been looking for one smile
If you chamber it in 7x64 , then you need to really consider a nice piece of walnut. The money you saved getting this far can go towards the wood. A Mcswirly........ wth is wrong with people! lol

P.s. Please put some other kind of scope mount on it also.........

Congrats on a great find, almost as good as finding a nice pre 64 M70 action(grin), I'm looking forward to seeing your project come together, enjoy!
Sweet deal TC1, a 6.5-06 AI in a nice stick of English with a bit of case coloring here and there would be one beautifully different hateful bitch. smile
TC1,
Congratulations on your find. Several years ago I found a G33/40 action listed on line for $350 I had never actually laid eyes on one, but knew all about them I didn't hesitate and bought it!

Well a month later I was in the local gun shop and there on the rack was a Mauser sporter conversion marked G33/40 for $250, I couldn't believe it and bought it!
Lightning struck twice! smile

I have enjoyed viewing your Mauser's and your G33/40 is in good hands!
i hope you post pic's and progress photos.

Here is mine after I worked it over.

4321,
Post a pic of your G33/40
Apparently a lot of folks don't "know" TC1. It will be proper, pretty and functional. I will also be of steel and walnut.

Yep posts by TC1 = grade A gun porn.

Either way, plastic on a G33/40 is tantamount to Sacrilege!
Yeah, a nice piece of Circassian or Turkish with dark streaks seems much better than a McSwirly or McM Flame... eek

Ed,
I have been drooling over TC1 Mauser's for a long time!
His guns have inspired me and can hardly wait too see what he does with this G33/40.
Terry, you ain't nothing but a pot lickin hound!

I took it out of the stock today. It looks to be in good condition, no pitting and no gunsmith F/U's. I found Jaeger trigger, Never used one before but it has a nice feel to it. That bolt handle has to go!

I'd keep the handle, have straight flutes cut in the bolt, swiss-cheese the mag box, and order a swirly.

Wow--that's nice! If you ever want to sell it, please let me know.
Sweet TC1

a guy like Karnis could work that stock into something special.

Exactly! I have to limit my exposure to TC1's photos because I quickly find myself very dissatisfied with my stuff. His rifles are working artwork.

BTW irfubar, that's a VERY nice rifle.
That base mount with the peep ought to bring a couple of bucks.

That one was a good buy as is. Where do you find 'em?

I dunno, I'll work you a good deal on this one. It'll come with rings and a scope on top.

Terry

That was more like theft or an entitlement than a good deal. Come to think about those are synonyms aren't they? With a bolt handle, too. Geez.

Have an Jaegar trigger than came with a deal (a fair deal, mind you). Was wondering if Timney made them? Any idear?

Unlike you uppercrust Gents, prefer the G33s as working rifles equipped with handles scorned by the elite...but do put wood on the VZ33s...:)

10-4 on the "double yuk".

A 6.5x57 would be cool, esp in a nice walnut full stock.

We go both ways here in Canada. smile
I live near Dean Zollinger. I was talking kaisers with him one day and asked him which one I should be on the outlook for because I wanted to have him build one for me some day. He said a G33/40 made a nice rifle so I've been watching for one ever since. I think you got a great deal.

I'd run a 21 or 22" 8 twist #1 or 2 maybe in a 6.5 x57.

Bb

I'm still kinda stuck on the 7X64. Lately I've been wanting a Mannlicher stocked Mauser so I'll most likely go in that direction and it'll probably have a 20" barrel. I've decided I'm going full funky on this one cool . It's going to have double set triggers, a shotgun style trigger guard, an old style long floorplate release lever and a left sided FN wing safety. It'll be wearing a set of Talley Q/R steel rings with modified Talley bases so I can leave the charging hump alone. For the sights, I have a beautiful old express style rear sight in the parts draw and will mate it with some sort of banded sight on the front, maybe a Ruger.

On the stock I'm planning on an english walnut mannlicher style with a mid-forearm schnabel and a metal NECG schnabel tip. I'll be looking for a plain grained blank with little to no figure in it for this project and if it doesn't finish dark, it'll be stained dark.

I've got a few more things I need to make up my mind on but that paints a pretty good picture of what I have in mind for this rifle action. It won't look anything like it does now when I'm finished.

Dean Zollinger, one day I'm going to get that guy to build a stock for me! I really like his unique style. It's truely original and beautiful to my eye.

Welcome to the club. The one on top was purchased at a Cabela's store several years ago for $250.00!

Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours.

Wow!
Very nice indeed!
Yep, those two will get your attention real quick. Nice rifles!
Arrg!

My guns are ugly laugh

Mike
OK, TC. Tell us the truth. Did you wear a mask and did you use a gun ?
Nice find ! E
I always thought that in the bolt action rifle world, nothing is as striking as a good custom stocked small ring Mauser 98.They just have the right lines if the metal and stock are done correctly.

They have that "pop" factor.
