Thought I would post some pics here of a few stocks I painted and did some other misc work on this weekend for members here. All painting is done with Duracoat
1st, My LVSF which has found a new owner. This stock got a new recoil pad to replace the gummy factory one, and a fresh OD with black and coyote tan specks
An original Ti stock in the same pattern, headed back up to Oregonmuley
A B&C Mauser stock for gunner500. I extended this stock LOP 1/2" and installed a new recoil pad. Per the owner's request, I also closed off the front sling stud hole. Paint is a lighter splotch camo with OD, Coyote Tan, Dark Earth and hints of black
Also for gunner500, a Bansner stock with shadowgrass camo with OD, coyote tan, dark earth, a custom mix of dark earth and desert brown, and black
A McMillan edge stock for Keahi. You may have read about this stock here:
http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/9565235/1This one was painted in a custom gray blend
Finally, a couple Nula stocks for rdobrow.
The first has a Woodland green bast with coyote tan, gray and black specks
And this one has a custom grey base to match McMillan's factory gray, with Desert Beige and black specks
Hey, nice work. The camo "splotch" pattern must have been a little tedious.
Very nice Darren, thanks as always. Dick
Those are some great looking stocks!
WOWWWWW!!!!! beautiful work Darren, fantastic, that digital splotch goes perfect with a bruiser like the 416 Taylor, and imho, the shadowgrass is a match made in heaven for a well mannered lady like the 6.5x55 Swede, fine work Sir.
Can't wait to get 'em back and all bolted together and zeroed.
Nice
Love the shadow grass
Looks good. The 416 Taylor is going to look good..
Looks good. The 416 Taylor is going to look good..
That's the big Mauser you sold me Calvin.
As always - good stuff Darren. I really like that dark grey & speckled one and the Mauser is pretty slick as well!!
That Ti you painted will most likely be in Wyoming with us when we chase antelopes, so you'll be able to see just how uber it looks:)
What do you charge for a speckle or splotch paint job?
What do you charge for a speckle paint job?
At present, $50 + return shipping. Any additional work that needs to be done, such as prep for paint, installing new pads, fiberglass repair, etc, is charged separately at a reasonable rate.
I think you're setting yourself up to stay busy...
Nice looking work!
Awesome job Darren!!! Just how I requested it. Can't wait to get my action into it.
Thanks for taking care of me in my bad situation. That was very nice of you to offer your services to me.
You sure got some skills and talent!
I really appreciate it.
MAHALO!!!
Keahi
Nice, really nice Darren.....
Flat black base and dark grey specks - very subtle. I also added texture to the grip here
Tan base, black specks
Dark grey with black specks
OD green with black specks
Woodland Flectarn
The splotch camo is pretty sweet. They all look great.
That's very nice work. For a very reasonable price like that you'll have a lot of business I'm sure. I wish I had something that needed painting right now, I'd send it out to you.
I'm very impressed, nice work.

What do you charge for a three-color job similar to this? Thanks.
All prices are the same at this point.
Thanks everyone for the compliments. This is a hobby for me- nothing more. If I get to go buy an extra box of bullets at the end of the day, or another pound of powder, I'm happy.
Looking great. Can't wait to a batch of tikkas are headed back to Iowa!!!

You do nice work! No doubt!!
X-VERMINATOR
TTT, had to bump this up, drooling here waitin' on my stocks.
Again, fine work Darren, you got mad skills.
Where are you located Darren? Might be close enough to drop off a few...
Nice job on the shadowgrass, super subtle.

Chico. Indeed you are
Not that Darren needs anymore endorsements but I have a few stocks that he has painted and they are awesome. Very durable compared to others too. Don't hesitate to have him paint your stuff.

Chico, eh? My past neighbor in GB/Suamico is from Chico. You may have heard of him.

Indeed I have. This town turns green and gold during football season.
FWIW, my boss is best friends with his parents, was with them on draft day, and has ventured out to GB for a few games.
Man, those are georgous! Nice work.
Do any work on wood stocks? Specifically, fit & install a recoil pad?
Do any work on wood stocks? Specifically, fit & install a recoil pad?
Same question. I'll send you a PM.
Do any work on wood stocks? Specifically, fit & install a recoil pad?
I can, but quite honestly if you are only looking for a pad install your local smith may be able to accomplish it without the expense of shipping. If you have any other questions, please shoot me a PM
What kind of paint are you using? How long is your turnaround time? Ben
Great looking work Darren.
Very nice!
twofish
This is nice... fantastic work.
Duracoat is what I use for paint. Very durable stuff.
I can generally turn things around in a week or two, but things like recoil pad installs, colors other than what I presently have, special camo templates, etc may increase that a week or so
Do you have a more close-up photo of the Woodland Flecturn?
Sorry, I don't. I sold that rifle a while back
I like it so much that I just may have to have it.
I have a couple coming up shortly, so there will be some posted in the near future. Flectarn is one of my favorite camo patterns.
So I just got my stock back from Darren and shot a couple pictures - the light outside wasn't great so the pictures aren't showing just how nice the paint looks - but it looks awesome!!
Thanks Darren, really liking this one a lot:)
You don't do any Gap camo painting do you?
Looks good Frank. Can't wait to get mine back!!
You don't do any Gap camo painting do you?
I can
Got any pictures of gap camo
Sorry- last one I did was a while back and I no longer have the pics. It's a rather simple pattern however.
Are you taking on any new work?
Beautiful work. I'd love to have you do a stock for me.
Just got a Montana stock done by Darren. Great job and just what I wanted. He even ran home to get it at 6:00 a.m. this morning cause I was gonna be doing some work nearby! Seriously good guy that does great work. Trying to decide what color/pattern for the next one is the hardest part.
Stock color on left for comparison.
Yes, that was just straight OD green
A few more from this weekend:
X-Bolt stock for Bighorn in a light brown with black specs
OD, Tan and Black splotch camo for Rubberduck270
A Couple Tikka stocks for JerradPelzer
First Up is a Custom Mix Tan/FDE with Beige and Desert Brown Specs to very closely match Manners Desert Hunter
I also textured the grip and forearm on this one
Any webbing?? Great work!
Nice work! Awesome camo combinations.
Would fleck paint like the Woodland look right on a "checkered" stock like a Remington Sporter McMillan?
Any webbing?? Great work!
I've done some krylon webbing, but don't like its level of duability when compared to the duracoat. I can clear coat over it to provide some protection
Would fleck paint like the Woodland look right on a "checkered" stock like a Remington Sporter McMillan?
It can look just fine. The camo tends to make the checkering less noticeable visually
I have a manners eh3 and a McM remington sporter on order. Think the checkering on both looks kinda cheesy. Perhaps a nice fleck would make things good.
Darren I have my Tikka stock I'm fixing to ship to you w/instructions. powdr
Darren,
My stock looks better up close than in the pics! Great work and thanks.
I really like the texture the paint gives it- did you add some texturing, or is that the paint's natural feel?
Darren,
out of curiosity, how many ounces dies a complete duracoat job add to the typical stripped stock?
Didn't know if you've ever checked that for knowledge sake
Wanted to compare to my results hacking it out here.

Good to hear you like it. That texture is mostly due to the flat paint I used- it certainly does have that slight feel to it.

I have not actually weighed it. As far as volume is concerned, I use slightly more than 3 tablespoons of paint for a typical job. If that was water, that would equate to 1.5 ounces. The paint is slightly heavier, but I know I lose some in overspray, so I would guess the added weight is about that- 1.5 ounces

I have wondered about this before. So I weighed the Ti stock you just did for me. It weighed 23.35 ozs before your paint, it now weighs 23.55 ozs so hardly any difference at all. The KS stock you did for my .280 weighs about 3/4 oz more, but that might also be due to what Master Class Stocks did to it since they added some bedding/pillars??
So it really doesn't do much at all.
Darren sending my stock this next week. Will send a letter along w/instructions. Nice work all around. powdr
Very nice work !!
Darren I sent you a PM about a Tikka T3 stock
Here are a few more headed home. (2) OD with tan and black speckle Tikkas and a Grey with Tan and Black speckled Brown Precision stock
Damn right, I've got three more on the way home soon too.
Darren, what Gray did you use for the top Brown Precision?
Nice work!
Brad, that is a custom mix of black and snow gray.
Thanks, thought perhaps it is Gray Wolf.
Thanks, thought perhaps it is Gray Wolf.
It is nearly a perfect match for the factory Kimber Montana gray

It is nearly a perfect match for the factory Kimber Montana gray
Looking at it that was my first impression.
I've only seen photos of Gray Wolf and based on the photos, it too looks like a close match to the Kimber Gray.
Apparently I'm the only one that likes Kimber Gray...
I have a few sent to Darren! I cannot wait to see them! Awesome work here... and thanks for the help OregonMuley!!
Mine headed his way today!!
Just got this one from Darren yesterday, he did an awesome job on this one. Basically a GAP Flecktarn pattern and he added some texture to it as well. Feels really nice, should be great when I'm hunting in the rain.

Love it !! but I might be a little bias
Scott, you're getting to be downright Uber, to have flectarn modeled after you.... grin

Glad you approve Scott, just need a moose shed prop:) Pretty sure I drove Darren crazy on this one though trying to match yours but he did!!
He did an awesome job !! Looks great
I am throughly impressed with all these pics! Thanks to oregonmuley, I am getting 2 painted as we speak. I can't wait to get them back! Please keep posting pics Darren... and others who had work done.

OM that turned out nice.....what kind of paint is Darren using?
Pretty sure he said its Duracoat, I do know its tough stuff that's for sure!!
Anyone know how it compares to Polane T?
Anyone know how it compares to Polane T?
Hopefully Darren will chime in since he is the painting expert but I had read that they are essential the same thing, except Polane T is just the Sherwin-Williams branded product. And I think you can buy Duracoat in smaller amounts and more colors.
Yes, same thing as Polane
Thanks Darren...............your work looks great!
Hi Darren.. did you receive my stock and paypal?? Thanks Rob
A few more from this weekend
First off, a couple lefty Tikka stocks, both with grip texturing.
The first stock has a desert hunter speckle finish
The next one is a shadowgrass pattern
Also did 3 more for gunner500
First is a Ruger factory stock that had a new pad installed (for a little more LOP), and received the OD/Tan/Dark Earth/Black sponge
In a similar paint pattern is a factory stock
And finally is his Rimrock stock painted in what I'm referring to as a "bruise" camo - Black/Snow Grey/Purple sponge. It's fitting for the 338-378 barreled action it will hold
HELL YEAH!!!!!
, looking real good Darren, fine work Sir.
The Ruger stock holds a little Hawkeye stainless in 358 Winchester, the Model 70 stock will house an old ornery cerakoted action stainless barreled 300 RUM, and yes on the 338 cal bruiser, black and purple are perfect colors for a weapon that flings 300 gr Accubonds at 3K.
Gunner
Another flectarn
And a personal one- my GAP non-typical hunter in 6.5x47l with a McMillan Classic edge repaint we in ATAC camo
And a personal one- my GAP non-typical hunter in 6.5x47l with a McMillan Classic edge repaint we in ATAC camo
Nice! But it will look even better when you are holding it in front of a big antelope buck come October!!
I'm on pins a needles... a few more weeks ... can't wait
And a personal one- my GAP non-typical hunter in 6.5x47l with a McMillan Classic edge repaint we in ATAC camo
Awesome rifle darren and enjoying your paint job pics as well. Might you share the specs of that build like barrel contour, action, and total weight? Thanks!
Nice...!
gunner does like those big boomers...
At least you got him looking good. That boy needs all the help he can get...
DF
I received the stock yesterday. Thanks Darren, you do great work!
And a personal one- my GAP non-typical hunter in 6.5x47l with a McMillan Classic edge repaint we in ATAC camo
Since I'm a 6.5 slut and don't have a x47 yet, I'll be the first to call dibs!
Darn nice rifle, Darren!!
Darren,
I've been using Duracoat for about 10 years, mainly on my own firearms, but, on occasion I'll paint one for a friend. I must say you definitely have an eye for combining the colors and producing a pattern mix that is simply astonishing. I know how hard that stuff is to mix together colors and use a template (theirs or a custom you make). You do beautiful work. I've got a McMillan A3 stock that my Springfield M21 is in that I'm going to paint...I just haven't decided to if I wanted to do something like your shadow grass or be lazy and go with a flat 'camo' color.
Sorry for the delay - I've been on vacation for the last couple of weeks.
The rifle has a Defiance Sheep Hunter action, McMillan Classic Edge fill stock with ADL trigger guard and a 23" Broughton #3 barrel. 6lbs, 10.4 oz with rings alone (so roughly 7lbs, 13 oz with the scope)

I been chasing mailmen like a dog... haha
I cannot wait to see what my stocks look like! I will definitely post pics when I receive them!

Thanks darren. Best of luck to you with it.
I sure wish you'd do a multicam and a Gap camo so I can decide which way to go on the next one. Sigh....
Have a multicam in the works. I'll post pics when done just for you.
Is it mine?? I cant wait to see it!!
I sent Darren another stock for a SS barreled action. Going to try a shadowgrass pattern in black, light gray, dark gray. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
I just recently received pics of my stocks have been completed! I will post pics once I receive them and put rifle back together!
Multicam Tikka stock with grip and forearm texture
I want to thank everyone who has let me paint their stocks for them. The support has been awesome, and I've had the opportunity to work on a number of great projects.
I have come to the conclusion that this endeavor consumes more time than I want to give up from my family. I have 3 young sons who deserve my attention, and while I love the results of my painting, no amount of enjoyment that I get from this compares to what they provide.
I am in the process of finishing the remaining stocks I have on hand, and will honor all commitments made for future projects as well, but at this time will not be taking on any new work.
If you are interested in me painting a stock for you, please still feel free to contact me and ask - depending on the project and where life finds me, I may still choose to take it on.
That Multicam looks pretty slick Darren. Great work!!!!
Man, that Multicam looks perfect!
Is there a specific paint model number that you use? what stores carry that paint.
thank you.

I believe Brownell's carries DuraCoat.

Duracoat - available through Brownells, Midway or directly from Lauer Custom Weaponry
And a Brown Precision stock in a Grey with black and OD speckles
More to come
Oh, sorry about the picture orientation. Photobucket isn't playing nice
Great job Derrek! Thanks again.
