when is a red recoil pad appropriate?
If/when you want one. smile
IMHO, it looks pretty darn good on a Classic Edge stock when the base color is brown & you have the black speckle finish.

Looks classy on about any non-tacticool long gun. IMHO, your tastes may differ.

Skane,
The rifle is a VZ-24 Brno action with a MRC barrel in 9.3x62 cut to 20"
The bottom metal is 1909 Argentine, rust blued, timney trigger, XS aperture rear sight, NECG front sight, the stock is a ebay special blank. I built it myself.

The ram is a California bighorn from south central Oregon, I drew the tag 5yrs ago, and it was the toughest most rewarding hunt of my life!
I scouted and guided myself, it was a high desert environment and it was 90 degrees everyday I loved every minute of it!

Black speckles are nice, but not necessary:

BSA,
Love your M70's! I think red pads add a touch of class to most rifles.
Another one of mine,

Saw one on a green stock and stainless rifle. Looked really good.
Did you guys know that red Pachmayr Decelerators now come in small X 1"?
For me they do best with darker brown stocks.

When you can't find a lime green recoil pad.
Where do I find a colored recoil pad?

Old model 70's look good with their original red pads too:

Like anything else. Whatever floats your boat.
When you grew up watching your father and uncle hunt with old Ruger M77 rifles. The red pad always stood out to me, so I like it on most my wood stocked rifles...

True. I forgot about those. I think Winchester and Ruger had the right idea:

Yep, that's the one. Except one had a one-piece Leupold base and rings with a gold ring vxII 3-9x40 and the other with weaver base and rings with a cheap tasco scope from the 70's. It is my hope to own both of them someday, but I imagine my cousin will want his dad's gun.
Have a number of rifles with red recoil pads and I do like their looks. Only problem with mine is they are on old rifles and the pads have hardened. Not much give to them. A couple of them had the X waffle thru the sides and with these I've cut out the waffle and inserted a block of soft rubber. LOL, cut and shaped from 99 cent black flip flop rubber sandals.
