Who would you all recommend for a gunsmith to build a custom hunting rifle? I often hear on here that there are some excellent gunsmith/campfire members that build great rifles without the markup of some of the big names. Someone in Colorado would be ideal but after that it probably doesn't matter where they work.
Thanks!
What action you thinking of using as a basis for the build?
That's an important question because many specialize in certain actions over others and several won't even work on some actions.
Remember too that its easy to ship your action off so you don't need to unnecessarily limit yourself by geography. I'm in Michigan and have had a great relationship w/ a 'smith out your way in Colorado who specializes in Mausers.
Good luck,

Defiance hunter was/is the idea but open to suggestions.
Three suggestions:
Robert Gradous
Tim Cronin @ Elkhorn Precision
Accurate Ordnance
No problem.....any of those 3 will build you a great custom hunting rifle!!
Ryan Kelsey at DCR...
www.diablocustomrifles.comHe's in Laramie, WY so depending on where you are in Colorado he might be in driving distance.
I'll 2nd Accurate Ordnance, the did a fine job on my 7MM-08 build last spring. I'd sure put Jon Beanland on there as well, great guy that can build with the best.
The others on 300MAG's list are also 1st rate with Gradous being the Obi Wan of rifle builds!!
Thanks for all the recommendations gentleman. I will look into these guys. No doubt you could pick any and be satisfied.
Where at in Colorado do you live?
Greg Tannel in Rifle colorado. Gre-'Tan rifles
www.gretanrifles.com
taylorce1 I'm in the Lakewood area.
Looks like Greg Tannel is about 180 miles west of you, I have several freinds who have had him build rifles. All ragged hole shooters.
Thanks bobtails, I'll look into him. Always nice to be able to walk into the shop and meet the gunsmith personally.
I know a couple in the Colorado Springs area, PM me if you're interested. Both have done work for me in the past.
Dan Dowling. His contact info is on 6mmbr.com. He is in Palisade and very good with Remington 700s.
+1. Charlie Robertson does excellent work.
Chad Dixon, LongRifles, Inc. CALL him. 605.490.2561 Thank me later.
Lot of good recommendations on here. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
To change direction a little here; You all find it more cost effective to buy the components and send them to the smith or have the smith buy everything for you?
Not any bad recommendations so far. The trick is finding someone who does great work that isn't a year or more backlogged.
I have always assembled my parts and then sent them to the smith. You can take as long as you want and shop for deals or try and get the components as quick as possible to get the thing built.
Bob Green in York, PA has built the last few for me. Does great work and isn't usually out more than a few months if you have the parts. He has my 6.5x47/6.5 Creedmore build components which I expect to be back by spring.
Lots of good choices. Research a bit, call a few and see who seems to be a good fit.
http://weaverrifles.com/Pricelist/Pricelist.htmDone two for me-great to deal with and my two are very accurate.
i will also recommend Bob Green in york pa. he has done several rifles for me and he is also listed on the top gunsmiths on 6mmbr.com
he is reasonable in pricing easy to talk with and prompt with his work which has always been excellent for me...
Nathan Chesney is also a good person look at his web site hbrifles.com
his work is meticulous....
I always gather everything then send it to my smith.
Barry Davis - Bayfield Colorado. Thank me later.
