Just finished round two of the 1 rifle for North America .270. The B&C stock felt bulky in my hand and I just couldn't leave well enough alone and decided to swap out the barrel and put on a little more scope.. Barrel length and chamber is setup around the 140 accubond...goal is 3000 fps, with accuracy and non max loads. That should get me to 700 on a 1 turn CDS dial.
NO I don't hunt that far, just nice to be able to have that for the range and play around with...Most of my shots in the field are 400 and under.

(Coincidentally, I have almost this exact build but on a 700 action for a 30-06 loaner rifle going on as well.)

FN Winchester 70 Supergrade Action
Timney Trigger
Shilen SS Match #3 barrel finished at 24 3/4" - requested more shank exposed
McMillan Classic, Edge fill stock
Talley Steel Low Rings/Bases
Leupold 4.5-14x40 30mm, CDS, Windplex Reticle
Rifle is bedded, floated, and Timney at 2 pounds.
Rifle with Scope weighs 8 pounds even...

Very nice combo you put together.

One question though, you specify the McMillan is a classic pattern?
I checked the McMillan website and the pic they display of the classic has no checkering and yours does? is it an option?

I really like that pattern, it looks more like the compact pattern in your pic's?
Maybe it's just the angle of the photo?

Very nice rifle! A 270 with 140 AB will work real well.

Sweet build and in my favorite cartridge. Should do anything needin' doin in NA.
I have been calling it a classic - but that is wrong - per the McMillan website retail store where I ordered it, it is a Winchesters Hunters Edge ...It fits me very well, extremely rigid and is very light...I did notice that the #3 contour is for sure the biggest barrel you could probably use on this stock.

...Load work yesterday was a simple as one could hope for.
Load was Winchester Brass, FED 210 primers, and 140 Nosler Accubond loaded at 3.336 oal - This puts me at 10 thousandths off the lands. Powders were H4831SC, W760, RE 22.

Shot the first 2 lighter load fowling shots at 25 yards to get lined up on paper....Then moved back to 100 and started break in and group work up... Shots 3,4,5 behind 58.0 of H4831SC averaged 3010 FPS and shot 3/4" - not bad...Next load 53.0 of w760 - shots 6,7,8 went into 3/4"...Last group I loaded was 57.0 of reloader 22 - 1/2" group - 3163 FPS high, average of 3149, shots 9,10,11...Warm load but not over pressured by any means and that's with a 140 grain bullet!

11 rounds and I am essentially done with load development! I am going to load up 40 more of these rounds and shoot again next weekend doing 4 5 shot groups at 200, and gong testing out to 3,4,500 yards check/validate velocity, and verify final numbers for my CDS dial.

Crazy thing is that exact same reloader 22 load out of the factory barrel would never break 2" 3shot groups and 2900-2950 fps.

We had the chamber cut for this bullet and cut a bit tighter than the factory chamber - seems to do the the trick!

Don't ya just hate when that happens ? grin

Seriously, good looking rig. I am undertaking same/similar concept with a LH Stiller action and #2 Lilja. Hopefully my load development goes as smoothly as yours...

Mission accomplished! what a great hunting rifle. Thing is screaming fast with those 140s too.
Nothing wrong with the 270 Winchester! Nosler 140 Accubonds are great bullets for that rifle also!
Great looking rifle. One of my favorite cartridges!

What is the reason for more barrel shank exposed?
Your gonna need a bigger freezer. smile. Very nice build!!

2 reasons - 1 I didn't want an ulta light weight rifle so some more barrel weight was fine.

But the main reason was that by showing more shank and cutting nearly all the extras off the end, its going to leave your muzzle thicker... .640 as compared to say .625-.630 - not a huge difference but the thicker the barrel the less barrel harmonics happen.
With a near 25" bbl your loads are warm probably but I'd say not over the top.

I love the 140 NAB but the 130 NPT at pushing 3200fps out of your long bbl would be a ripper too!
