I'm wanting to get 280rem. vel. with a 150gr. bullet out of a 24in. barrel would it be possible to get or close to 2900 vel.? or is that just wishful thinking.

thanks in advance

Yes...
Posted By: laker Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/12/16
2750-2800 is doable. 2900 is leaning on it hard.
Posted By: Canazes9 Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/12/16
2900 w/ a 23" barrel, RL17 150grn Scenars is easy and not loaded to high pressure.

That's impressive. The 3 I've owned and loaded for I couldn't hit 2900. What's your brass life like?

Doable with a vanilla...
Posted By: bludog Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/12/16
With the right powder, yes - RL16 or RL17 would be where i would start.
Posted By: laker Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/12/16
Im going to have to try some of that Reloader 17. Does it have the velocity swings of RL 22 with the change in temp?
I'm getting 2735fps with a 162AM in the SAAMI version...

Brass life is good. I loaded the same 10 cases repreatedly once I got to 5 loadings with primer pockets still tight I quit worrying about it.

RL17 is consistent and gives good accuracy for me. It seems to work best in a chambering where you've got a full case or a lightly compressed loads.

Re17? 22" barrel? Thanks.
IMR4166 and 22"
Posted By: jotrott Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/13/16
I have a short action laying around and want to do something with it and I have a custom 7rem. mag for long range and it is pretty chunky so that's why I don't want to do a 280 no long action laying around.
thanks for the replys and keep them coming

My wife's 7-08AI set at idle will run a 140 Accubonds at 2875 fps with h4350. Pushed hard it easily breaks 3000fps. With a 21" Douglas cm pipe. The 150's easily run 2825 fps with rl17.
Posted By: Daveh Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/14/16
IIRC I get close to 2900 with a 150BT using H4350. I find H4350 and R17 interchangeable with R17 normally edging 4350 for speed except in my 6XC where they are truly interchangeable.....

I'm sure you're right. Wouldn't surprise me if it's someone that feels like it's perfectly acceptable to run a 7RM at the ragged edge, but gets their undies in a bunch anytime someone leans on a 308/30-06 based case.

Mine runs 2875fps with 150gr LR Accubonds and Reloader 17....Max load but safe in my gun..

Varget is about as good as it gets in my 7SGLC.

Sure kills the snot out of big bull elk.

God Bless,

Steve

Brother Steve,

Could you give more details on the 7SGLC? My memory is failing me right now....
Posted By: powdr Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/22/16
I have a 7x57AI with a very similar case shape and only a slightly larger case capacity. I get 3050fps w/56.5gr of RL19 and a 140gr ballistic tip and 2950fps w/55.0gr of the same and a 150gr ballistic tip. 2900 w/the right powder should be very doable in the '08AI. powdr
Posted By: RinB Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/22/16
I believe a 280 has more capacity than a 7-57 Imp and it will barely get those speeds in a 22" barrel.
Posted By: RinB Re: 7mm-08 ackley improved - 06/22/16
Am I wrong on the capacity?

Close enough to your goal to not worry about the AI part.

Unless you want an AI....

There's a constant drum beat on these forums that AI chambers aren't worth the trouble. If you are talking about AI'ing a factory barrel, I agree - the gunsmithing bill won't be worth the added benefits. But if you're talking about cutting a chamber in a virgin blank, an AI chamber can be cut for the same price as a standard chamber.

It's only 50-75fps more velocity for an AI over a standard, but more is reliably still more. Not having to trim brass anymore is a nice added bonus. Factory ammunition shoots just fine in an AI barrel (my fireform loads are very accurate). W/ a hand lapped custom tube and a tight chamber you will get about the same velocities as a factory tube in a standard chambering - my 7mm-08AI w/ Hart 23" barrel routinely shoots a little faster w/ factory fodder than published velocity.

Really the only down side is fireforming the brass. If you're the kind of person that puts at least 100rounds down range in the off season, it's a non issue. I doubt I will ever chamber a custom tube in a standard chamber for a bolt rifle again.

For whatever reason, I've always detested the "08" nomenclature. Soooo, I did what Layne Simpson did and named the round kinda after myself grin

My 7X308 Ackley barrel is engraved 7SGLC ... 7Steve's Good Little Cartridge.

Blessings,

Steve

I agree with the above post. Although the barrel for the 7-08ai I have now came from a factory Rem Alaskan Ti 7-08. I like the 50-75 fps, and hardly ever trimming.

IF one can get those listed velocities with Reloader-16 in a stock 7-08, add another 50 fps with an AI and it supports a very nice lightweight, compact hunting rifle.

My wife used a 7mm-08AI to take a 7x8 NM bull last fall right at 400 yds. She was using a 120 gr TTSX with a MV around 3120 fps. Very easily obtainable with a standard 7-08. Admittedly, IMO at least, this was close to as far as I would want to try that particular combination. But the bullet did exit and the elk walked about 30 yards uphill and went down. She did put one finishing shot in him when she and her guide got to the bull, but he wasn't going anywhere.
