Does anyone know how a Bartlein 2b barrel will fill out a McMillan with a Rem sporter barrel channel? I already have a McMillan with a Remington factory barrel channel. I would like to try one of the Bartlein 2b contours but don't feel like waiting 5 months for another stock, or having a finished product that looks funky. Anyone done this?

I have one in a similar set-up and it fit pretty well. The diff may be in the shank length but your smith should be able to adjust for this.

The Bart 2b is closer to a Rem Magnum Sporter. But it wouldn't take much material removal to get it to fit in a stock inletted for a Std Factory Sporter. Dowel rod and some sandpaper would get it done.

Biggest difference would be the shank size and shape!

That was what I was thinking. Hard to tell without actually having the barrel and stock in hand. I thought maybe someone here had tried this before.

I did, I had a Classic Edge that had a factory sporter contour in it, then had it opened up to the 2b contour, worked fine. The 2b is much thicker mid-way down the barrel channel and also at the front. Not sure if this helps at all, sporter on the left, 2b in the middle.

So sounds like it should be no issue to get it to fit, just needs to be opened up a tad in spots. No unsightly gaps near the shank or did you need to remove some material there also? I figured most of the barrel channel would be pretty close but was concerned about the shank area.

Diameter of shank should be close, I would be more concerned with the contour change shape, but it looks like OM has been there and did it maybe he'll get some close up pics!

Not sure I can get a good picture of the shank area since its got a scope on it. But I can tell you it looks fine, that rifle on the picture I went with a really short shank so it looks fine, no weird gaps or anything. Looks like it was made for that barrel. By the way the 2b is a really nice barrel contour IMHO, just had another one put together with a 2b and sure like it!

Choosing a barrel contour is always tough. In this case, the question would be...

2b, or not 2b

Thats a Brux #3 contour, fluted. Probably my next fav to the 2b, both are great IMHO for a med weight hunting rig.

I have a fluted Brux #3 in a Ti take-off, I was leaning towards a Remington Classic McSwirly with PTG Stealth BM for a replacement. The photos below sure help with the decision.

This is the picture I should of posted, it shows the contour of the sporter & 2b a little better since you can see the middle portion of the barrel. From just below the shank the 2b is a bit beefier than the sporter so its mainly that part the needs opening up. I compared the one that had the barrel channel opened to the one I got from McMillan inlet for the 2b and they both look alike as far as the gap around the shank area. I can try and take a picture of you think it would help??

For the actual numbers comparing a Bartlein 2B BLANK contour with a FINISHED Remington #3 (24-in) sporter contour:

Both have 1.2" shank diamters, the 2B shank length is 2.75" while the Rem is finished at 2.0".

The "start taper point" on the 2B is at 6.0" and is at 7.0" for the Rem. The diameter at that point is .850" for the 2B and .760" for the Rem.

The diameter at the muzzle end - finished length 24" - is .630 for the 2B and .660 for the Rem.

I love the middle and right rifles. I recognize that engraving on the barrel on the middle rifle. I'm collecting the parts to have a 7-08 built. In your honest assessment, who would you choose to build it. You've used all the ones I'm considering using. I will likely use a manners stock this go around.

As much as I like that rifle in the middle, if I did it again and I plan to build another this year I'd use Jon Beanland again. He did the rifle on the right, he is about as good as you could ask for IMHO.

That is a beauty. I'll have to see. I just like the idea of doing it local so I can walk into the shop and see progress. What about the Chesney fella? Can't think of his first name. I think Scott (Skane) uses him.

I did just have one built by Nathan - Nathan Chesney @ Hillbilly Custom Rifles. He was great to work with, always available and we discussed my build in great detail and everything turned out exactly right. Wasn't anything uber fancy but its a nice rifle and attention to detail is super. Of the 5 different smiths I've had rifles built by, only 2 did exactly as per the specs sent, Nate was one and Jon Beanland the other. The others always forgot something - rifles turned out great but its the little things:)

How long is turn around with John and Nathan? Guesstimate.

Nate was about 7 months, the first one Jon did for me was about 3 months and the 2nd one maybe 7-8 months. His website says 3-4 months or quicker of you supply the parts.
