I'm working on getting parts together for a build and I'm considering a fluted bartlein #3 barrel. Does anyone have a picture of one that was fluted by Bartlein?
Not the entire rifle, but what I have. Most accurate rifle in the house.
Good looking rifle. What's the build specs?
Here is one I got in recently for a 6mm build.
Winchester 70 Classic action. .308W with 1:10. Set up for 165NBT's, but it is more than a little fond of 130TTSX.
Started out at 22in, but it was too front heavy for my liking, so cut back to 20in.
McMillan Edge.
I've got one on a 260 Rem custom, but it was fluted by Longrifles, Inc.
Yes, a factory fluted bartlein #3
Doesn't look as heavy as I would expect a #3 to look. I've been considering a 2b but after seeing that picture it makes me feel better about the decision to go with a #3.
Yeah. I am happy with it after seeing it in person. I was worried about going to light. I'm going with the #3 with a 1" cylinder and finishing at 23" which puts the threads starting 1" past the end of the fluting.
I've got a Bart fluted #3 sitting on my bench; I'll take some closeups of the fluting for you when I go out there later. Want to see it next to say a Sendero profile tube... or a Rem magnum profile?
That would be great Jeff 0. Thanks for the help fellas
Go carefully....
It will be nose heavy. Unless you want heavy and are not carrying it around all that much.
Battue that's what I don't want. Do you think it will be nose heavy at 22"?
I hunted with a Remington ltr for a while. It was a little nose heavy but not bad. It also had a 40oz stock but the Barrel was over .800" at the muzzle.

You should be good to go at 22"
Agree 22 will be fine for most. If I had it to do over it would be 21. But obviously you could go with 23 and cut it back if you are not happy. Did so with mine and accuracy stayed excellent.
That's my thoughts. I can always cut more off. I have a light weight rifle I had cut down to 20". Really wish I'd went 21"
Does anyone know what a #3 fluted would weigh at 22"?
For reference: Rifle now wears a 1.75x6. Still tips to the nose a little from the middle screw. I wouldn't consider it a LW, but it carries well for me at 20 plus a little.
Does anyone know what a #3 fluted would weigh at 22"?
What caliber? I now that can sure make a difference in weight. Bartlein website says 3.5 lbs for a #3.
Not an exact comparison but might help as an example. I just had 2 rifles built using the 2b contour, both finished @ 22.5" and both with 3/4" shanks. Everything is pretty much the same as far as parts, one barrel is fluted and one isn't. The non fluted rifle is a 7MM-08, the fluted is a .243. The .243 actually weighs a little more than the 08. So knowing the caliber might help guestimate the overall weight.
But like others have said, the rifle will likely be a bit muzzle heavy - not much but a little which is not a bad thing IMHO.
OP contact Bartlein for weight. Fwiw I had two 260s. Unfluted. 23 and 24"
Would do 21-22 max in any standard non mag round. What are you building?
Personally would flute a 3 or use a round 2B or 2 for a sporter.
My 6.5L was 22 or 22.5 in Light Palma. Later had cut to 20 and fluted. Really love it but it's double duty for range work and stand hunting.
20-22" is a sweet spot for me. 23 or longer would be for larger capacity rounds in lighter contours. Just MY preference.
Re build weight and balance. All add ons matter. Stock. Scope. Mounts. Bottom metal or not. Etc.
I contacted bartlein about the weight and the guy I talked to wasn't real sure on weight but said it should be just under 3 pounds. 2.8-2.9 fluted at 22".
It will be chambered in 7mm-08
That's about where I want to be with weight. If I can stay under 8# I'll be happy. If it's a touch over I'll live with it.
What are your other components?
It will be in a 26oz manners eh-6 if that helps. Haven't decided on scope yet but it will be under 16oz either way I go and resting in a set of talley light weights.
You'll be where you want then. I have a 2b 22.75" w/ 3/4" shank in an eh6 and 20 ounce scope in talleys, right at 8 pounds. Mine is a 260, so the fluting, larger bore and lighter scope should make up for the #3.

I think you will make it easy. My 7MM-08 with the non-fluted 2b sits in a Classic Edge, Talley Lwt rings and a not fancy Leupold 3x9x40 scope and weighs 7 lbs 5 ozs. So adding a few ozs for the bigger contour barrel should get you under your target weight of 8 lbs if not going with a heavier scope. Should be a nice rig!!
Oregonmuley you don't happen to know what your McMillan weighs do you? Also up for suggestions on a good scope. I mainly hunt in the woods on the east coast but I have some plans to hunt mule deer and pronghorn out west.
Both of my Classic Edge stocks weighed 24 ozs. In regards to a good scope, I'm pretty low tech so not sure I could be helpful there. I hunt antelope every year in Wyoming and the Leupold Mark 2 3x9x40 with the Long Range duplex works well for me. I'm sure someone will chime in with some good suggestions.
What does your mark 2 weigh? Thanks for all the helpful info by the way.
Ive got a ton of leupolds From vx-IIs to mark 4s but I'm willing to consider other brands.
They weigh 12.3 ozs on my cheapo scale but think that should be about right. By the way great choice in going with the 7MM-08, I might be a bit biased since I have several but it makes for a great hunting rig. Here is the one I referenced in my earlier post, I've posted it before but its been awhile so here it is again:)
I'm a fan of the 7mm-08. I own a few already.
You're on the money with what you want.
Will make a nice sporter
I have a 21" fluted #3 coming back from LRI in a few weeks. I'll report back on the weight.
The heathen 308 barrel weighs 1,699 grams (or 3.75 lbs in christian units).
Fluted Bart #3 showing closeups ofvthe fluting. Muzzle end:

Can't wait to plumb it up!
Good looking Barrel there Jeff. Thanks for the photos.
Here's my 260 with a few specs:

257 HEAVEN DO YOU HAVE ANY PHOTOS OF THE WHOLE GUN? THAT IS VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT I WANT.
This is an boots tube turned to 3. No flutes it's in a McMillan hunter.

Sure. Here it is sitting below a 280AI with a little bit skinnier fluted Brux #3.
I NOTICED NONE OF THE RIFLES PICTURED HAVE A MUZZLE BREAK. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ONE TO RUN A BREAK BUT I THOUGHT THEY WERE PRETTY POPULAR NOW A DAYS.
I use suppressors on mine. No need for a break on a 260 or 7-08.
Pat, is that a recent pic? I see the killing scope is on it. LOL Man I wish I'd got several of those before the price went sky high.
that's a good looking rifle scenarshooter. whats the specs?

Last October on a mountain goat hunt.
I've sure had good luck with them. I have them on four different rifles, and never had a problem with any of them.

I agree but I have seen a lot of breaks on smaller calibers lately including 6.5 creedmoor.

They do look good.
Any recommendations on some light weight bottom metal? I'm looking at pt&g. Is there a better option?
Hawkins precision bottom metal is what I'll be using next! Very nice!

Hawkins.
Anyone have thoughts on Trigger Tech triggers??
That's where my money is too! Stiller "Predator" i'm thinking....
Boy that GA Precision sure is a nice lookin' rig. I bet it could shoot lights out too.
Yep. Tac30 308.
I looked at starting with a rem700 but this seemed like the best value, all things considered.
Kinda figured it was a stiller. Didn't know if it was a predator or tac series. Thanks for the info.
Sendero man that is a good looking rifle. I would really like to know the specs including Barrel length and overall weight if you know it. Agin amazing looking gun.
