Starting on a 6BR in the near future but having a hard time on stock choice.

I have a couple of McMillan Classics but that's the only stock I am familiar with.
I'm looking to use the rifle for 90% range work, paper and steel out to 5-600 yards, with the occasional groundhog and crow pot shot. I'm thinking I should be twisting 1/8 to shoot the 105 Berger, but still would like to shoot some 75-90g bullets as well. I'll be doing this on a SA 700, ......will I have problem with the magazine and the ability to seat the 105s out far enough to touch the lands or do I need to go to another magazine system? I would think I wouldn't have any issue but better ask the ones in the know first.

Does anyone have any experience with the Winchester marksman stock? I'm not a big fan of the A series of stocks, and I really love the HTG but the low comb height scares the crap out of me. I don't want something that's is too wide in the forend and real thick in the grip area.
The Mike Bryant Remington 700 Magazine Conversion works well.

I like the Winchester Marksman stock, but it does not come with an adjustable comb option.
What barrel contour are you considering?

No problem. Just have it throated correctly.

Have a look at the McMillan Remington Hunter.

John
Thanks hondo, I want to like that stock but it's hard lol.

Something like the classic with the straight comb but with a forend that is wider would be perfect...... the tactical hunter could be a winner?
Didn't pick up on that you wanted a straight comb. I thought you were worried about the excessive drop at comb of the HTG. The Remington Hunter has quite a bit less. But, given what you describe, how about this one?

I was trying to stay away from the Vertical grip stocks but the game warden is nice, that may be the route I end up taking....
For the contour cited, the Hunter wearing DBM is a nice way to fly, without any bullschit.

Barrel was chopped to 21" and it's superb in Kreedmire. I'd not want a 6BR any longer than that. Top of frame. #4 Hart in a Classic wearing DBM below it,at 24" in 260AI 1-8".

COAL won't be an issue, but reliable Feed/Function will,if you don't go DBM and Primal an AICS mag. Hint.

Mike's approach ain't horrid, but I'd rather shim the nose,so as to retain good ride height of loaded rounds in relation to the bolt's nose. My 20" 8" Bart' 6BR Montucky,is fed in sucha manner and is flawless with the nose shimmed...but had issues with the stern shimmed instead.

Very easy to essentially create a funnel,to guide things into battery, even ala CRF. 700's are more forgiving.

18" 1-8" Hawk Seven based 6BR fed ala DBM with AICS poly 10's.

A 21" #3 1-8" or faster 6BR in a Classic wearing DBM and 5rd Primal guts, would make for an exceptional parcel................

Having owned a number of 700 and custom-based repeater 6mmBRs, I would say that Stick has led you to some very refreshing water. Drink deeply. There is a lot of good information there...
Good info here. My next build will be a 6 BR or a Gay dasher

BR is so easy
I have a 6br repeater that was built by McWorther. Great little hunting rifle. It has been sitting in my safe since I bought it. Never shot it only have tried cycling rounds through it. Feeds and extract flawlessly.
Lots of good information here, appreciate it.

Stick- when you order a stock from McMillan how does DBMS work? I've never had a detachable mag system. It's completely foreign to me. As is the terminology lol. As to no longer than 21" for the 6BR, any particular reason? As I was planning 24-26"?
KY. Think 12-15 fps per inch wink

Had rifles in 22, 23, 24, and 26" -

If/when I do another it will be 19-21 and a #3 Bart in 8t is PERFECT. Fluting for looks would be fine in this bore.

HAD STRAIGHT taper BR profile at 22. Heavy as hell. Bugholes. Others were varmint profiles except one that was .750 at 23. For pure paper or varmints like PDs heavy works. For a carry rifle for deer etc shorty and handier is much better - IMHO.

My 7BR in a M7 fed like glass. Old style stamped follower. It uses heavier bullets and lays down more keeping it level in mag for good feeding.
It was a 3G P-N 21" .700 muzzle. Perfect for that gun. I'd want anything from .650 min to .700 max OD again at 19-21. If 19 I would do tad heavier. Longer a tad smaller OD. .675 at 20 might be my sweet spot. Small capacity burns quick.

Edit. KY - for your purposes I might consider 24" in Varmint taper since you want max hold ability on small LR targets. My Stiller build was just that in Bart 8t. Probably my most accurate build. 66/68 Custom Cook bullets and 105 Amax both shot 3-shot 200 yd groups of 1/4" using a Vx-3 4-14x40 LR/T. Had a Jewell. I think it will serve you well. Less report and no issues at all self spotting all shots. Enjoy.

Based on your description in your OP, I'd not overlook the Rem. Sporter.

Also, DO NOT go off the McMillan forearm width spec (website) of the Tactical Hunter (1.720″) - tis much wider than that.
I've told them about that typo no less than 5 times over the last 6 months and they still haven't changed it.

How many pictures of one do you need?

Skane-appreciate that. Maybe one day they will get it cleared up.

aalf- nice pic. Like the colors a lot, a shot of the forearm underneath would be great if it's not too much trouble.

The Marksman is my favorite stock for all the uses your upcoming build is for. It is a beefy forend, 2.430" at the front sling stud. I've settled on two stocks for all my needs, a Classic or a Marksman.

The left two are Varmint contours, the right is a HV/MTU/AMU.

[Linked Image]

Sorry...a little fuzzy.....

[Linked Image]

Absolutely what I needed alf

Appreciate it very much.

I always thought the LVSF stock was a good compromise. Unfortunately it was just ugly as sin.

People love to bash the HTG over comb height:

A little comparison.....

A-5 - 1/4"

Marksman - 1/2"

Varmint - 1/2"

Sporter - 1/2"

Mountain - 9/16"

Game Scout - 9/16"

HTG - 5/8"

Classic - 11/16"

And for your viewing pleasure.....more Marksmans......
