Thought you might like that. The more I hear about this round the more I keep thinking that I need one!!! A lightweight 25 WSM, my .338 Win Mag, and a .22 or 6mm of some flavor for varmints and I think I'd be ready for anything and everything I would ever want to hunt.

I'm very eager to learn all I can about this chambering. And "anxious" is an understatement.................

I don't see how it will equal a .257 Weatherby with less powder. The .257 Wh. holds 84 grains of water and a 300 WSM 82 grains. The Weatherby has a freebore also.
 
 But the neck looks long enough.

I can't comment with any hard data,as I don't have the rifle yet.
 
 I fail to see how a case of that capacity,could not put some serious speed on a 100gr .257" projectile,assuming adequate barrel length. Mine will wear a 25" long tube and I'm thinkin' 3700fps is a reality.
 
 My 25-06AI is of even less capacity(73grs) and grants 3600fps,via it's 24" tube(Re-22/100gr XLC). My guess is,the 257WSM will do quite nicely.
 
 Before long,the guessin' will be over,as I fully intend to wring it out...............

 Been tryin' to figure my damn QL out.
 
 Near as I can tell,75.5grs of RE-25,in a 25" tube,squirtin' the 100gr XLC at a 2.810"COAL,will yield 3696fps at 65K PSI. That with 100% propellant combustion,in that 25" tube and propellant density is high enough to grant compression(something I strive for).
 
 I'm thinkin' that is close to 3700fps(grin). How the hell could a man NOT like that. I'm gonna push some more buttons and try to discern more computer generated data. 85's oughtta be plum SCARY!

All I have is the Powley formulas. It shows a 100 gr out of a .257 WSM at 3463 using 70.5 gr of imr 7828 with a 25" bbl at 44987 psi.
 
 So if you can get that much RL 25 into the case the velocity will be higher than 3500 it seems. That's well ahead of the 25/06 and into .257 Weatherby terrritory and without the freebore but with a shorter rifle.
 
 I really feel that this WSM case is one of the best things to come along in a very long time.

 That much Re-25 goes in a virgin 300WSM case easily. She'll go in the 25cal version.
 
 Been crunchin' more numbers too. With 66.0grs of Re-22,it grants 3400fps,at 61K PSI,using the 115gr Nosler Combined Technology Ballistic tip. Again,in a 25" barrel,with a 2.815" (Rem 700 friendly)COAL and at a 96.4% propellant combustion rate.
 
 That load zeroed at 250yds,drops but -25.5" at 500yds(retaining 1432 ft lbs) and will keep 1000ft lbs of energy,to the 750yd line,where it is but -85" low(11.25MOA). That isn't very far to spin a turret!(grin)
 
 Strikes me as nice performance,for a "dinky" Quarter Bore,that's tucked within a short action Remington 700.

Ok, let me put my dummy hat on and ask this: What action will handle this round without boltface mods?
 What would the ideal Rem. donor action be?
 
 Of couse, then I have to think...should I do this instead of the 25-284 in my Rem. 600.....

Ideal,with no mods? Remington S/S Model Seven in one of the SAUM offerings. All you need is a new barrel(and a McMillan stock).
 
 The WSM case is shorter than the 284Win case and of more capacity. In 25cal,magazine constraints are not an issue,within the Remington's 2.800"-ish typical magazine box length.
 
 The 25-284 is a superb cartridge and I very much love it. The only way to beat it,in a short action,is to go the SAUM or WSM case design(or Jamison or Lazzeroni,but they require even more boltface mods and not all 'Smiths are willing to open a Remington up that far).
 
 So I see the 257WSM as King of the Hill,working within a short action's confines and the Rem 700 series in particular. In fact,it will even whip up on my beloved 25-06Ackley Improved. To beat the 257WSM,you gotta go 257Wby. Now I dearly love the 257Wby too(UNDERSTATEMENT),so I'm sorta torn.
 
 I'm of the opinion that the 257WSM makes the most sense of the lot,for a superb performing,lightish-weight Game rifle. It is a 25-284 on steroids and I view that as a most positive attribute.
 
 I hope for performance that treads on the heels of the 257Wby,in a package akin to the 25-284. Were I starting over,with not a single 25cal in the fleet,I'd jump into a 257WSM just as fast as I could arrange it.
 
 Vicous rumor is that it will be a Factory round,before horribly long. That would simplify the process for many,if you could stomach a Winchester based rifle(grin).
 
 I sorta like 25's and the WSM makes very good sense to me,so the melding of the two was a natural conclusion. Now it is but a matter of time,to see if that hunch,bears fruit.
 
 My hopes are high...............

Mmmmm...... An extra 600 action laying around,but craving a 257WSM?
 
 How's about a 243Ackley on the 600 and the WSM on the S/S Model Seven SAUM action?

I read in RifleShooter that Montana Rifleman Inc will be producing an action just for the WSM series. I guess Stick wouldn't like it though because it is similar to the Win 70 [Linked Image]

, but it does have some traits of the Rem's. Just a thought for the future as their not in production yet. Prices they quoted seemed reasonable as well.
 
 Fadala also stated that he thinks the 257 WSM is the next in line for production.

Williams Firearms,is coming out with the action,that would interest me. S/S,integral bases,great trigger and mighty fair pricing. All in an action designed for the WSM.

Here's some more 25 wsm info. This is not my info.
 
 Here is a follow-up on my loading progress with the 25 WSM. As I stated before, I was trying to get near the velocity of the 257 Weatherby Mag and came close using IMR 7828.
 
 At a charge of 92% case capacity, I'm getting an average of 3312fps. with a 115gr. Nosler B.T. with 62.5gr.
 
 The 257 Weatherby Mag gets around 3342 using 67.0gr. of IMR 7828
 
 That is around 6% less powder than the 257 wthby. I am more than satisfied with the results!!
 
 sdgunslinger, you mentioned freebore. This is a custom made barrel and I first want to mention that I used a Remington long action and gave in a few dummy rounds to make the chamber throat. I have more than enough room to jump bullets as there was alomost 3/4" of space in the detachable magazine to jump them any where I wanted. I chose a lenght of 2.95 as my final bullet seating and the barrel is freebored accordingly.
 
 Now on to some more powders.

 what does free bore have to do with velocity?

blammer, all else being equal- if you have more freebore you can set your bullets out further, leaving more powder capacity in the case. More powder=more velocity
 
 Of course, this doesn't take into account the other varialbles- mag. box length limitations, bullet style, etc....

That,and it gives the bullet a runnin' head start at the rifling(Technical Term). So you can load to higher pressures,without getting kilt(Technical Term).
 
 Proponents dig the speed(and I personally think the throat lasts longer). Opponents cite accuracy issues.
 
 I've had 'em throated most every which way. A Rem 700 based Custom Rifle,wearing a 257WBY SAAMI chamber/throat,is my favorite chambering on the Planet.

I was out at the range over the weekend, slippin some moly coated 150gr Swift Sciroccos thru my 7mm Rem (I'll be writing up a report later). Had a fellow shooting a .257 WSM next to me. It was based on a Ruger #1, rebarreled by Montana Rifleman, with a SS bbl at 26".
 
 He was shooting 115gr Nosler BT's (non-coated) and loading with 60.0-grs of RL-25. We were both curious about the velocity, so we chronoed them at 3247 fps. He said that he had loaded up to 62 grains, but that the primer pockets opened so much that the cases (necked down brand new .300 WSM's) wouldn't hold a primer after one firing (at 62grs)!!
 
 Just a data point ... RL-25 may be too slow for best results in this cartridge.
