Anyone build off a Winchester 670/670a? Can get them for pretty reasonable price and I thought they would make a cool custom. 280 ai or something with a #2 barrel and a bansner stock in a blind mag configuration. Everything compatable with the model 70? Gun show this weekend and I want to keep my eye open for a cheap one.

Let me know what you think or if you’ve messed with one.

A new/used remington action can be had for 300.00 roughly and the large availability of good after market parts for it would negate any savings at that point in my opinion
I agree. I have had many guns built on Remington actions. Just think a m70/670 would be something different.

i have heard but dont know for sure that some of the barrels for the lesser priced models are pressed in and not threaded .......might be something to verify before buying
That would be a good thing to know...I’ll have to do some digging

Mine is not.

my stupidity ....i was thinking this was the winchester version of the 770 remington....
Ok good. I was finding a few customs built on 670 actions.

No reason not to build on a 670, there is a lot to like about M70's - good hunting trigger, the sliding extractor works well, easy take down of the bolt assembly and a good safety, and IMO they are a good looking action.

I will probably get a lot of kickback from this statement but I have had better luck with model 70's shooting good out of the box than I have had with Rem 700's shooting well out of the box.

If you find one be sure to shoot it before rebarreling - you may be surprised.

Found a 670 with three position safety. G prefix serial number, I think it a newer one. It’s a 30-06, got it for $300 shipped. I think it’ll make a good 280ai.
Plan on replacing the magazine spring and follower ( they were riveted together and fail at inopportune times). I'm another one that says find a 700 action or use a M70. MB

The 670 IS a M70 - just the cheaper version... smile
Don't shoot the donor! If there is a chance you'll sell the build at some point you will probably take a bit of a beating on the price by using a 670, fwiw. I think they are a great value, but not one to put a bunch of money into.
Redneck I know but they are damn rough compared to an XTR. MB
It might need to take a little trip to hangout with redneck. I just need to decide on a caliber.
So if I do a bansner(legendary arms works) stock it comes as a featherweight contour. What barrel contour from pac nor would fit in the stock best. I’ll probably have to open up the shank area but the barrel channel is like to leave as is. (I don’t want a barrel any heavier than a featherweight)

I have two 670 Winchesters that I used as a foundation for builds. Both were chambered for the 30-06 round. Built the first one as a 6.5 x 5 Swede. I was able to get a Winchester produced barrel from Gun Parts. It is a featherweight barrel. I think it is 22 inches long. It shoots 120 grain Partition bullets very well. 140 grain bullets still go into groups 1 -1 1/2 inches for three rounds. When the barrel gets hot the groups start to grow. My other rifle is now a 280 AI. I put a 26 inch, magnum weight Wilson barrel on it. It really likes 160 - 168 grain bullets. I can made a baseball dance across the range at 300 yards with it on a regular bases. I have been thinking about finding another one to build on. The action is to the Model 70 as the 700 Remington ADL is to the 700 BDL; Blind magazine.
Only difference ive seen in the 670's Ive handled and M70's which ive owned over a dozen of:

Blind mag
Beech stock
No jeweling on the bolt.

You'll do just as well starting a blind mag custom as you would a M70 Ranger (same thing but jeweled bolt) but you'll start off 50-150 bucks ahead.
Many of the Rangers actually came with a featherweight contour barrel already installed, usually with sights screwed on. Just drop it in a better stock and go hunting.

Some of the 670 had a sliding two-position safety instead of the standard Winchester type.

The short action 670 calibers were built on long actions.
It has the 3 position m70 style safety. I’m going to shoot it to see how it does as is. Depending on barrel contour I’ll get a stock on it. If it shoots good I may just let it be for a while. I just don’t want to ream out the barrel channel of a new stock then want to put in a lighter contour barrel down the road.
You know what happens when you shoot the donor ....

I did the exact same thing with the previous "Youth Ranger" I bought, found a short action Liightweight stock on ebay and swapped it over. Really happy with it. Think I paid 300 for that 243, and like 60 for the stock. I'm a big fan of the Lightweight stock, kick myself for passing on a few for decent prices.

another good m70/store branded is the model 53 sears. usually better finish then the 670 and shoot all out of proportion to their cost.
the one i have now was going to be a donor but i shot it. 5 rounds off the bench at 100 in one hole. thought i was missing the whole target. i put it in a boyds stock and it stayed the same. like i needed another 30-06.
Vmax, that looks great. Micky htg?
I had my 338 put together on what was a Sears model 53 in 270. Bought a Super Grade 338 barrel on Ebay for $90 shipped. Took it to McCauslins Rifles in Carlisle. He put the barrel on, headspaced it, set it back 2 threads, replaced the extractor, tweaked the feed rails just a bit, mounted it in a different stock, mounted and bore sighted the Talley's and Leupold, and test fired it and made sure it all worked well for about $300. I paid $250 for the gun when I bought it.it had a Brunton scope on it that I sold here for $80. Sold the stock off it here for $40.Got the stock that's on it now off here that I traded some extra random cheap knives that I had laying around. Bought the Talleys off here for $25.The Leupold 3-9 was a takeoff from another rifle I traded into and sold for quite a bit more than I had in it so the scope was a wash. Probably coulda just bought a 338 for what I ended up putting in this one, but I like it so it's all good. My oldest grandson has already laid claim to it for when he's bigger (only 9 years old now). And I would do it again in a heartbeat...and thinking about doing it.....

Been happy with every Winchester I've owned.

I have pop's 30-06, 18" carbine. I didn't go too far, just added a hinged FP and plastic stock.
Growing up I used this rifle as my first centerfire rifle.
This is a first year rifle with the anti-bind slot.

Looks slick. Picking mine up tomorrow

Ok reviving this thread picked up a 670 30-06 for $299 at the local range. Gunsmith looked at it and quoted $90 for a pad and $90 for the labor and said leave it. We didnt even go into installing sling swivel studs.

Revisiting fixing it up this year Boyd’s didn’t have a killer Black Friday sale this year and bansner raised the price. Should I just have bansner do a signature stock install
And bed it so I get a better pad and sling swivel studs?

It will always be heavy but sighting it in for deer season I decided I really like it more so than my browning a bolt synthetic 243, Remington 700adl 243 and x bolt 6.5 creedmoor
I'd love to find another 670, as I have a Winlite blind mag sporter stock needing a home. I had a 670 .30-06 in it but the kid I sold the rifle to didn't like the stock. So he gave it back to me when he scrounged up a spare factory synthetic and two piece bottom metal. I've hung onto it hoping to find a .270 Win rifle to cut down and thread for use with my suppressor.

Good idea my 30/06 probably has enough meat in the barrel to Thead 5/8x24. I really like this rifle despite being bombarded with needing a NULA 20 or Barrett fieldcraft (which I’d love!) or something with a carbon fiber barrel or carbon fiber stock.
I would suggest a 150 Nosler Bt or 165 Accubond
Rel 19 or IMR 4064. Every 670 I have played with shot these very well. My last one was in a Brown Precision stock.
