Is it possible to date a Savage Model 23D .22 Hornet like you can with 99’s? Serial #2196xx.

Thanks

Chris

Cody says they only have records up to 210,826 for the model 23's. Serial number makes me think 1938/1939, GeneB or Rick might have more info on this one. It's one of the more unusual configurations.

Close. The D&T on the left side and checkering were added 1940. I'm not sure at what serial they ended but I know they went to at least 222xxx.

PS... the Hornet was added August, 1932 which would be about the time the serial numbers on the 23 centerfires changed to the 200000 range.
FWIW, my 19H is #2122xx.
Thanks Jeff.

For those that don't know, the 19H is the target version of the 23D (.22 Hornet) and both use the same serial range.
Nice looking Unertl small game scope you have there!
Cool setup. What's the story on it?
Just picked it up from a gun show yesterday and asked the seller what he know about it but unfortunately he couldn’t tell me anything. I just really liked the way it looked that’s what caught my attention.
Rick, the introduction is a little earlier than you thought, I have a #66 catalog with a Jan 25, 1932 pricelist that has the 23D @$29.95, the 23B & C @$22.50 and the 23A @$18.50.

The catalog pictures never show a 23D with a schnabel forend, the other models all do.

That would make sense, though I'd say it possibly happened in late 1939 like the 99EG checkering apparently did. Nov/Dec?

Are you saying the 23D's were only made up to around 222,xxx? Or that this style only went that far?
"Are you saying the 23D's were only made up to around 222,xxx? Or that this style only went that far?"

Changes were made to all of the "23" family in 1933 (actually sometime 1932). Serial numbering for the centerfire gorup (23B, 23C, 23D and 19H) changed to the 200,000 range starting at 200,000(?) with the addition of the new 23D, Given that there are no known records on these later rifles past 210826 (per Cody), 222,xxx is just the highest serial I have data on at this time.

There is still a lot we don't know about this family of Savage bolt guns.
Rick-Rory, are you keeping serials on these rifles in general. If you want mine I'll go get it.
The 222xxx, 23D is yours. smile

I'll take info on any of the later 23's or the 19H.
Go figure, you know more about my guns than I do!
I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled on it...

I have 23d serial number 21967x. It has checkering for and aft, a Savage receiver sight, and what appears to be factory 1" sling swivels.

Thanks.
I don' t have a lot to work with for the 19-33 center fires. The Savage records stop at 210826 which I think is around 1939. (Rory, add to your list of things to check on, please).

1940, per the catalog, they started D&T'ing on the side and added the checkered grip and bottom of the forearm. Other than that, we don't know when what years they assembled rifle or when they stopped.

Serial 222xxx is the highest I have in my data, so far. The new 22 Hornet (23D) was started at 200,000(?) in August 1932. The 19H, 23B and 23C are also part of this serial range. We might say 24,000 total production divided by 4 models with 23D having the largest (10000-12000?) production of the four. Pretty low production numbers.
Yeah, Center of the West shows they only have info on Model 23's up to:
• 2500-210826

Other sources tell me that's 1937. Makes sense they'd stop at the same time as the 99's.
I would guess 219,67x to be 1941. The 23D continued being made up to 1948 - well, at least sold up to 1948.
Thanks guys. Appreciate all the info and work you guys put in and share. 👍
