Anyone have any good reloading recipes getting groups less than 1MOA?
AJ

I bought a model 99C in 284 Win. last summer.
Bought a set of dies etc. immediately. Didn’t do a
Lot of experimenting, but found a load I was pleased
with….

150 grain Nosler Partitions and Ballistic tips.
52 grains of IMR 4350
REM. 9 1/2 primers
Lapua brass.

Not less than 1MOA….but right around there
I load 120 grain TTSX for mine, less than an inch. It hammers deer and pigs. F model. I load the 120 TTSX in a Kimber 280 BGR also. I load 53 grains of H-4350 with the 120 Barnes in the 284

Very much appreciated. Based on what I'm seeing here and another place it seems the 284 likes lighter bullets instead of the 160/175 grn?
Thank you
One of the challenges facing the 284 is the magazine length limits. The 284's 55mm case length limits the length of the bullet that can be loaded and will still allow the loaded cartridge to fit and feed from short action magazines. Winchester originally offered two factory loads,125 and 150 grains, both were reasonably short bullets that would fit in the first two cataloged 284 rifles, the Winchester 88 and 100. Since the 284 has never been a big seller, it is now loaded as an occasional/seasonal cartridge prompting them to drop the excellent 125 grain load while retaining the more universal 150 grain load.

Not many 99s are 1 MOA shooters due at least in part to their generally less than crisp triggers and their 2-piece stocks.
99 x 284 in 284 should be looked at like a fast 7-08 for load info. You don't really have the magazine length to take advantage of long heavy 284 bullets,

My B.I.L. has taken a truck load of deer with his fast 7-08 + 120g (zippity-do-dah!). He now has a custom 99 x 7-08 that also likes the 120g Center target is two different three-shot groups at 100 yds (140g and 120g) that were shot to the same aim point. Last target is 200yds

I already sent AJ my load suggestion but here it is for anyone else interested in a Savage 99 load. This load is proven on big game including one unfriendly bear. A couple buddies have used it with good results too.

Speer 145 gr btsp
57 gr H4831SC
CCI LR primer
Winchester brass

This is the bear that had an unhealthy interest in me.

Looks like Wifey when really pissed off.
260remguy: will the 99 take a custom trigger?
Thank you JeffG: whats that recipe with the nosler 140grn?
AJ, I sent you some of the Speer bullets today.
My 284 was a Model 100 Winchester. I used starting loads for the 280 and worked up.
No aftermarket replacement triggers available (, that I ever heard of..) for the 99
51.1g Re-17+WLR primer x 2.79" LOA

I don't know of a custom trigger available for the Savage 99. Some people stone the sear, but it can easily be overdone, making the gun unsafe.
Thx so much Fireball2
