I know I've read there were a few early Post Mills with the old barrel thread. How few are we looking at? Does anyone have an action they would let go of? I think I'd like to find one to screw my Westfield 22HP barrel into. Thanks.
Not many people want to unscrew their barrels, so we're not sure how many there are.
does it have to be a post mil receiver? I have some earlier bare receivers.

Have you considered buying a complete gun and swapping barrels to your HP, so you don't have to find stocks for an orphan barreled action? I believe I'd find a rifle I wanted and go that route. Understanding the guts will have to be reworked to function with your 22HP barrel.
The only post-million 99s that I have seen that way were on the first year or two of 99Es, the ones that look like 99EGs without checkering.

I've never seen a cataloged tang safety 99 with square threads, but have seen one of the non-catalog configuration rifles that were made in the 1980s when whoever owned Savage at the time cleaned out the warehouse, closets, corners, and cupboards to build anything that they could ship. I saw a 99C receiver with square thread 24" barrel in 250-3000 that appears to have been originally made for a post-WW2 99EG or 99R.
David and Roy. It fits all of my early T/D actions, doesn't index on them. The barrel is a Westfield replacement barrel with Westfield barrel address and the early threads. I'd like to find a post mill action with the early threads, so they would match. As Rory said not many folks are going to unscrew their early post mills to see what thread they have? If you run across one, I'll probably still be looking.

Oh, I get it now.

I had one post mil receiver with the early threads but darned if I remember now what it was. 250 I think. I did talk about it here when this subject came up before. Can't remember why I had the barrel off it either.

That's what's great about getting old, you can have all these cool stories and no one expects you to remember the details.

"There was that one time when the Swedish bikini team showed up at my house and needed a place to stay for the night...."

"Really, what did you do?"

"I don't remember"

LOL
is there any logic to changing the thread style? Is one that much better than the other?
Joe, regardless of what you end up doing, getting that barrel to index properly will be a minor nightmare. Then you'll still have to make the internals conform to the .22 High power as stated above. Personally I would view it as a novelty, a relic from when Savage was an accommodating company, and leave it alone. Having a pro do the work will be expensive if he keeps track of his hours and charges accordingly - and what you'll end up with will still be a curious anomaly.

Mike, I would not be changing anything. I have a Westfield replacement barrel with the old thread. There are post mill actions with the old thread, Roy had one. I just want to befuddle the pundits in 30 years when some one winds up with a 22HP with a Westfield barrel and a post mill serial number.

I could have sworn that when we talked about making one of my T/D's a switch barrel , with this barrel, you said it would not be hard at all to get it to index. It might create a head space issue, that could be addressed? What would make an old receiver easier to put that barrel on it, than a new receiver, with the same thread. I understand it may take some internal work too.

I posed that question to a mechanical engineer buddy and he said flip a coin. The square (buttress) threads are stronger (resist pulling apart) but V-threads are typically tighter (resist unscrewing). Who knows what logic the designers at Savage followed 64 years ago - sometimes I think they were British dudes. (Definition of a British engineer: someone who'll go the whole way around his hand to find his thumb!)
Pretty sure the action that Roy had is one I barreled in 7-08 for JeffG it is his brother in laws deer rifle maybe he will share the sn so you know what range to look in

Regardless of where it came from it is a tang safety square thread

I wish we had a like button for that one. I’m at the point by the time I got around the back of my hand and got to my pinkie, I forgot what I was looking for?

Yes, this = #1000469

...so, VERY early post-mil.., (like monday afternoon or Tuesday morning of the first week,)
I like that definition of a British engineer. I owned a few Triumph automobiles in the distant past including a Triumph Stag. The worst automobile I ever owned. It sure looked cool though.
Joe, what intrigues you for wanting a post-mill receiver? Just so it would have a Westfield SN'd receiver with a Westfied barrel?

Yep.
