Local guy I know has one of these but we do not know much about it. I am just wondering if anyone here has one or knows anything about this chambering? I understand it is a necked down 30-06 casing?

I don't own this rifle and I have not seen it so far. I have my doubts it will ever be put up for sale.

Any information would be helpful.

270 Titus also known as 270 Savage.
This is basically a 300 Savage necked down to 270
Handloaders Manual of Cartridge Conversions reccomends reforming 270 Win as there is not sufficient support for the neck when reforming 300 Savage. This cartridge will make a 130gr bullet go 2763 fps according to Ackley. This was a not very common conversion done to some 99s.
Do you know how old/what model of 99 your friend has ?

Thanks for the information. My friend has only briefly told me about this rifle and so far I have not asked him to show it to me. I have been thinking about it and maybe I should just get together with him and take a closer look at it. I might just learn something new or different. If I do get to lay eyes on it, I will contact you with any information I find.

Back in the mid-1980s I had a Savage 99R that had been rebarreled by Bliss Titus, Huber City, Utah, to 270 Savage. I didn't have any dies, but managed to do a little reloading for it using 300 Savage dies and a 270 Winchester primer punch. IIRC, I was getting 2800+/- with 130 grain Remington PCLs from a 23" barrel. This rifle was SN 6097xx and had a Buehler mount with a B&L BalVar 8A the last time I saw it.

FWIW Bliss Titus had his shop in Heber City, Utah which is near Park City, Utah. He made cut rifled barrels on a WWII era Pratt and Whitney sine/bar machine. They were very good barrels. You always had to wait a while for one. He sold his business in the late 70's I think. He really liked the 270 Savage 99 conversion.

Yes, I read about the .270 Titus Savage, as developed and chambered by Bliss Titus, in Gunsmithing by Roy Dunlap. A quote from Dunlap: "This is perhaps the only wildcat cartridge brought out by the demand of regular hunters, instead of experimentalists in the handloading game.". Apparently, the cartridge was "exceptionally accurate" with ballistics close to the 270 Win. Seems like a mystery why Savage didn't adopt the round?

A set of dies sold on ebay in the last 6 months. I got sniped or I'd have them in hand.

Lee will make custom dies at a price that won't kill ya, if anybody ever gets around to trying to make one of these again.
